Turning off Soviet Block but no team signs FA

Running historical game starting at 1980. In the 1989-1990 season the checkmark by the Iron Curtain rule was still marked. I thought that was when it should have been automatically removed?

In any event, I removed it and guys like Hasek, Federov, etc were all available as Free Agents but no team signed any of them. On Sept 1 they all disappeared as free agents (guess playing with their home country).

In the following season, they were again all available as free agents and yet not a single one was signed (and again on Sept 1st, they all went back to their home country).

Surely teams would have signed some of them? A number of them are 4+ or higher potential and some are 2 or 2.5 (or higher like Hasek) in ability.

Is Iron Curtain rule working as intended? Is it something that we have to manually switch off and how come no team signs them as free agents?

It'll shut off automatically in 90-91, not 89-90 (aside from players who actually entered the league before that.) I've just run a couple of tests (with the no-draft option on, the format the change in the hotfix affected) and I'm seeing normal signings in 90-91 (e.g. 30+ Russians in the league at the start of the season), so what you're seeing may be related to the manual removal of the rule a year early.

I have a yearly draft and there were no free agent signings in 90-91 for the Soviets/Czech players, so do you think I messed something up and those guys won't ever get signed? or it may take another year?

Not sure the best way to try and "fix" that save. Hasek is 25 and 4 or 5 star playing for Czech team. Soviet team is of course loaded too.

Is there a way to make them (or some) be part of the draft next year? Thanks

I get normal drafts and signings from Eastern Europe when I start a game in 1980 with the draft on and turn the iron curtain rule off in 1989 as you did, so I think you'll likely see the signings working if you continue. But you may want to make a backup copy of your game (using "save as") and quickly run it in unemployed/do-not-disturb mode to the next season to see if that happens.

So with my current save I continued as normal for now and on Sept 1st a few of those players were signed by AI teams - Bondra, Hasek, Federov, Fetisov, and a few others.

It also looks like the Sept 1st is when all those players are removing from the free agent pool and come back July 1st when the new season starts.

My one suggestion for now would be on the Manager options where you can mark the Iron Curtain rule it says "prior to the late 1980's".

Since it's specific and not random, what about changing the wording to say something like "prior to the 1990-91 season" ?
Since it said late 1980's, I was thinking it would have been the 1989-1990 season

Yeah, I think it was originally 89, then we changed it because the 89 group (KLM, Fetisov, etc.) came over with official permission and things didn't really become a free-for-all until the following season. I'll change that so it's more specific.
