Maybe, but not “wishful” on my part. I am still rooting for the Phils to somehow catch the Mutts, without Harper. With Scherzer and deGrom, the Mutts have the best rotation in baseball, built for the post-season. The Phillies have the big two, but question marks beyond them, and a sudden rash of (hopefully, minor) injuries. Atlanta has weaker pitching, beyond Freid, who is having another good season. I would say 94% is rather high in terms of playoff probability at this point, even with the added slot this year, with St. Louis/Milwaukee, the Phils, Florida, SF contending with Atlanta for the two slots after the Dads.

Things the Mets need between now and the deadline:

- a catcher that can hit a damn lick
- a third baseman that can hit a damn lick
- couple relievers never hurt
- the Barves to open a big old can of rotten luck and a 9-game losing streak

That was a nice ceremony!

Now slap the Fish for a W; that would be even nicer.

That was one of the stupider 10th innings I've seen in my baseball watching career.

At least the orange and blue won, somehow. Fish had the clumsier claws, err, fins?

Now excuse me, it's 2:15 am, and my eyes are clo-zzzzzzzzzzzzz (snore)

Jesse Chavez balks in a run in the sixth. Finally, redemption! 11 years ago, a Mets-Barves "free game of the day" was the first-ever Mets (or any team's) game I saw live and in color. Y'know, the one where D.J. Carrasco balked home the winning run in the 10th.

A few days ago Sandy said he's looking for a bat (singular) and relief help.

As far as I'm aware, there aren't any good (even okay) catchers or third basemen available. Wilson Contreras may be the best who may be available catcher, but even then, I'd expect the Cubs are going to want way more than what teams will give up. Maybe the Angel's make Villar (Util IF) available since he's in the final year of his contract? I think he's playing third for them right now.

Relievers may be the only hope during this deadline. Mets are also exploring Luis Castillo as a starter, but not sure how serious they are.

Stroman tweeted he was beyond thankful to be gone from the Mets?

I hope the Mets tear him a new one now.

I'd be beyond thankful.

At least I didn't like him from the beginning. Always thought he had too much attitude.

But then again I don't like about 94% of all people, so there's that.

LFGM?

The good news: Mets win in 11.

The bad news: Mets used up their above-and-beyond D and dumb luck for the next at-least-that-many games.

I think there's more fun in watching somebody have a colonoscopy than in watching Petersen pitch. Full count, full count, full count, full count. Just start at 3-2, maybe he can then get through six...

Fantastic first round pick by the Mets. They're getting a great a hit-first catcher who may be ready for the majors mid-year 2023 or early 2024. I should know as a fellow Tech alumnus

I just worked through all the recaps I missed the last couple of weeks so now I know what you were talking about... I didn't realize the Barves picked up Cano. I never wished him ill when the Mets dumped him but now... glad to see he's gotten his SLG all the way to .207 I'm surprised they had a roster hole for him to fill, such as it is. Looks like he had a rough 30 ABs in San Diego!

When I saw the Mets took a Tennessee guy in the second round, I immediately thought "oh dear baseball gods, not this guy, please, no, no, no, not this guy" ...

It's not him. The Astros took this guy at #28.

Is there a guideline on when eyeblack becomes blackface?

NEW YORK -- As he neared what could have been a season debut as soon as this weekend, Jacob deGrom experienced an issue that’s now threatening to push back his timeline.

deGrom began feeling mild muscle soreness around his right shoulder on Sunday, according to a team spokesman. He played catch on Monday and Tuesday without issue, “but out of an abundance of caution, we opted to move his simulated game to Thursday.”

This is the most surprising news since Fred Wilpon vetoed a deli order because the pickle cost extra!

And don't worry, it's just a "little" shoulder pain. Like when a girl is a "little bit" pregnant!

Takeaways from the Mets' largely listless 4-1 loss to the Padres on Friday night.

Pro: The Mets are back!
Con: ...losing.

Pro: The Mets are back!
Con: Mostly on national TV though.

Pro: Scherzer was fine.
Con: Darvish was finer.

Pro: Mets trade for Dan Vogelbach!
Con: Mets trade for Dan Vogelbach, continuing to be entirely hopeless against southpaws.

Pro: Travis Blankenhorn!
Con: Travis Blankenhorn.

Con: Nido had a paw squished.
Pro: His replacement can't possibly hit less than him.

The highlight reel is mostly Keith antics, like absolutely enjoying reading out loud the pitching log of the Red Sox as they got crammed 28 by the Blue Jays, and being cordially invited by Gary Cohen to trim his hedge if he's bored while the Mets are on national TV.

This fellow makes Pete Alonso look svelte.

His slash line is unimpressive, but as a subheading says, "Vogelbach should represent an upgrade over Dominic Smith as a most-days DH."
