ice time

I really never had opportunity to watch much hockey growing up, not being from hockey town, so forgive me.....

I started watching some old NHL games on YT.
I guess i am surprised how many subs there are and how many stoppage of play there is.
I am surprised that players get fatigued so quickly and don't play (i don't think) like 6 mins in a row.
That 6 mins has say 5 stoppages for whatever reason.....goal, penalty, faceoff....
I basketball player can play a full 12 minutes easy....

Also it seems player WANT to get penalized, at least the 70s-80s games i am watching

I guess since i never played i will not understand why it is so fatiguing.
Soccer runs all game long.....basketball if fast sprints with players doing 36 or minutes....
There are lots of stoppages.....

I'm currently reading a great book called "take your eye off the puck" and it states that an NHL skater is going to last between 45-50 seconds per shift and a top pairing defenseman plays between 26-30 shifts per game while a top line forward will play 23-26 shifts per game.

Pretty interesting stuff
