Why does my brand new expansion team have budget info from the previous year?

OOTP23. First time player here, and I just started a new standard league based on real time start (October 31st). I simmed to the end of the playoffs, then went through the expansion wizard to create two teams. Made myself GM/Manager of one. It is still day 1. My team has no staff or players. Don't understand how I have player expenses and previous year's expenses.

Not sure what the answer is, as I have never done expansion this way. I like to give the new expansion teams “lead time” by starting a farm system and signing amateur players - participating in the draft for a few years before their first MLB season. And of course any new team would have staff, well before the start of their first season. In other words, you will need lots of players beyond the ones you acquire through the expansion draft. (And depending how many players the established teams can protect, the expansion draft may only yield second-line players and over-the-hill stars with ridiculous contracts.)

What the game may be doing is providing you with this infrastructure, rather than have your team go into the expansion draft with no staff, and no reservoir of young players.

As an example of how to do expansion, to yield potentially competitive teams, rather than laughingstocks, in my next expansion, I will allow the new teams to participate in the amateur draft starting four years before expansion, and thus have rookie league teams for those players, that first year. Three years out, they will have at least a low-A minor league team. Two years out, they will add a high-A team or teams. One year out, they will add a AA team. They will be participating in the amateur draft each year. When they reach the expansion draft, they will have an organization of young players, and can choose accordingly. Their first year, they will add a AAA team, for the best young players, as well as the vets who don’t make the MLB team. I think this approach builds anticipation, and puts the new teams on more of an equal footing with the established teams.

I play expansion teams all the time. Yes, it's annoying but only mildly since it has no effect on gameplay!

Expansion drafts are a real problem, though. I generally have to go through all of the major league teams and submit their protection lists so they don't do anything stupid like leave last year's Cy Young winner unprotected (yes, this has happened lol)

This has happened in the past. What the devs said/explained is that the program must have numbers there in order to procede. So they stick in current numbers until the second season. As was said above, simply ignore it.

I like to play as you do (but I sim 10 years first to get the cheaters out ot the my game). and these numbers always pop up but never have any impact on play.

The same. In my 2021 expansion, the Dodgers left Bellinger unprotected. Now, he had an awful year, but that was still a head-scratcher for me. Wouldn’t it be better to shop him around first? The AI does love the financial side of the house, and uses the expansion draft to unload guys with top-heavy contracts - even if they are good. This presents real issues for the expansion team. Do I take on this huge contract, when I am not going to be winning anything anytime soon?

Not to hijack this thread, which asked a limited question, but the settings exempting young players diminish the field, but also prevent the AI from doing stupid things (or failing to protect studs and potential stars). The limit (if used) on number of players drafted from a single team also prevents “raids” on an organization.
