faceoffs hard?

I know very little about hockey...
is there reallllllly a skill to face offs? (i imagine yes)

as a layman...i don't know what to look for....just seems like chaos...its one of those things where i think...i could do that.

i also thought each player has to be outside the circle on face off...the 70s games i saw that didn't seem to be the case

The pros make it look easy. All you have to do, you might think, is get down in there, and you win some, you lose some, but it's not that tough. I'm here to tell you that is absolutely not the case.

I played in a local beer league once. There were some guys who had played college hockey, but most everyone had never advanced beyond rec. This is important to the story. I went to take a draw against a random guy, and I had never done it before (didn't play until an adult). I got low, prepped my stick (hands on the stick and their position), and was determined to give it my best. I didn't think I would win, but I was going to dig in there just like they do on TV.

Nope. Puck dropped, guy seemingly didn't move, and it was gone. I literally had not moved. In the millisecond after it left the ref's hand, he had flicked it back with no resistance from me. It is absolutely not so easy and there is definite skill!

I've seen guys practice winning draws with the butt end of their sticks, (rather than the blade), just to get better. Puck possession is a huge factor in any game, and yes there's a great deal of skill involved.

There is a massive amount of skill and work that goes into faceoffs in the NHL. Both guys are competing for the puck and the wingers are doing everything they can to either stop the other team from getting the puck or trying to get the puck for their team. It really is controlled chaos.

There should be youtube videos on face-off plays. For those that don't know a lot about the game of hockey, would be worth a watch. It's a very important part of the game, especially in the offensive and defensive zones.
