Spotlight: Honus Wagner

Philadelphia Athletics star shortstop Honus Wagner is the talk of baseball right now, as he raised his hitting streak to league-leading 25 consecutive games. During the streak, Wagner is 45 for 109 (.413 batting average) with 11 Doubles, 2 HRs, and 15 RBIs.

Games 30 - 32: Philadelphia Athletics vs. Boston Americans

The win streak continues, as Boston topped Philadelphia to get the three game sweep! The victories moved the Americans into a 1st-Place tie with the Detroit Tigers for the American League lead.

Game 30: It wasn't pretty, but Cy Young did just enough to get Boston (20-10) the 6 to 4 win over the Athletics (12-18). Young (4-3) tossed a complete game 12-hitter (on 162 pitches - yikes!) allowing 4 earned runs to finish with a Game Score of 50. Earl Moore (2-5) lasted 7 innings for the Athletics in taking the loss, giving up 10 hits, 6 runs (4 earned), and a Game Score of 42. The Americans hitting attack was nicely spread out, with Jesse Hoffmeister (2 RBIs), Fred Clarke, Frank Chance (Triple), and Pat Crisham (Triple) each getting 2 hits on the day. Honus Wagner went 2 for 5 (2 Doubles, 1 RBI) in the losing effort.

Player of the Game: Cy Young (Season: #4 / Career: #4)

Game 31: Not that Noodles Hahn really ever needs much help, but to give him 14 runs on the day is just simply too much for the opposing team to overcome. Riding the ace arm of Hahn and an offense that generated 18 hits, the Boston Americans (21-10) topped the Philadelphia Athletics (12-19) by a score of 14 to 2. Hahn was dialed in, tossing a complete game 5-hitter in which he allowed just 2 earned runs, struck out 7, and finished with a Game Score of 73. Six Boston batters had multiple hits on the day, led by Fred Clarke (3 for 5, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs, and league leading .437 batting average) and Frank Chance (3 for 5, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI). Of note, Honus Wagner's consecutive game hitting streak came to an end at 25 games.

Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #6 / Career: #6)

Game 32: Not to be outdone by his teammate Noodles Hahn, Jesse Tannehill reminded baseball pundits and fans alike that he has the makings of an All-Star pitcher. Tannehill (6-2), in cruising to his 4th consecutive victory, tossed 1 earned run on 9 hits (Game Score of 67) to give Boston (22-10) the 6 to 1 victory over Philadelphia (12-20). With another outstanding outing, Tannehill lowered his ERA to 1.67; second best in the American League. At the plate, Boston was led by Dave Brain (2 for 4, Triple, 1 Run, 2 RBIs) and Ossee Schreckengost (2 for 4, 1 Run). In the loss, Philadelphia third baseman Billy Clingman went 4 for 4 on the day.

Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #6 / Career: #6)

National League - Player of the Week

While small in stature, Ginger Beaumont came up big as the NL Player of the Week winner. Beaumont smashed the ball to a .484 average (15 for 31) with 11 RBIs to help his Chicago Orphans team go 6-0 on the week.

Week 5 Team Power Rankings

The Week 5 MLB Power Rankings are out and the Detroit Tigers are the new leader at the top as they jumped from 2nd to 1st. The Chicago Orphans had the biggest jump on the week, moving from 11th to 7th, while the Washington Senators (4th to 9th) and the Cincinnati Reds (8th to 13th) each suffered the biggest drop.

Games 33 - 35: Boston Americans vs. Washington Senators

Winning just 1 game in a 3-game series is never fun, but knowing that Boston had the lead in the other 2 games heading into the 6th inning only to blow the opportunity is downright disappointing.

Game 33: After enjoying a nice extended homestand, the Boston Americans took to the road to take on the Washington Senators. Despite facing arguably the best pitcher in baseball, Boston jumped out to an early lead against Rube Waddell's Senators only to see the opportunity squandered in the 6th inning due to a Monte Cross 3-run blast. Washington (17-16) would go on to top the Americans (22-11) by a score of 5 to 4. Waddell (7-4) picked up the win despite allowing 4 earned runs on 11 Hits and 3 Walks to finish with a Game Score of 53. Taking the loss for Boston was Fred Klobedanz (6-2) who, if you were to exclude the 6th inning, pitched rather well (also finished with a Game Score of 53). Unfortunately, the 6th inning happened (allowed 3 hits and hit 2 batters) and that was that! At the plate, Boston was led by Ossee Schreckengost (3 for 4, Double, 2 Runs, 1 RBI), Jesse Hoffmeister (3 for 5, 1 RBI), Fred Clarke (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run, 1 Walk), and Win Mercer (2 for 5, Double, 1 RBI).

Player of the Game: Rube Waddell

Game 34: Walk-Off! A clutch 2-out hit by Wid Conroy drove in the winning run as the Washington Senators (18-16) topped the Boston Americans (22-12) by a score of 5 to 4. Jack Chesbro (4-4) picked up the win (Game Score of 48), while reliever Al Orth (0-1) took the loss, with starting pitcher Cy Young getting the no-decision (Game Score of 49). Boston had 11 hits on the day, led by Jesse Hoffmeister (3 for 5, Double, Triple, 1 Run, 1 RBI), Frank Chance (3 for 4), and Fred Clarke (1 for 3, 1 Run, 1 RBI, and 2 Walks), while Washington's 12-hit day was paced by Danny Green (3 for 5, Triple, 2 Runs, 1 RBI), Monte Cross (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI), and Wid Conroy (2 for 5, 1 Run, 2 RBI).

Player of the Game: Danny Green

Game 35: Boston desperately needed a big outing from its ace, and Noodles Hahn did not disappoint. Leading the Americans (23-12) to a 11 to 4 victory of the Senators (18-17), Hahn (7-3) allowed 4 runs (2 earned) on 8 hits while striking out 9 to finish with a Game Score of 66. Casey Patten was saddled with the loss, allowing 8 runs (7 earned) on 11 hits in 6 1/3 innings; Game Score of 20. Boston had 15 hits on the day, with 6 batters having multiple hits led by John Farrell (3 for 4, 1 RBI, 1 Walk), Ossee Schreckengost (2 for 5, 3 Runs, 1 RBI), and Bill Lange (2 for 5, Double, 3 RBI).

Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #7 / Career: #7)

Games 36 - 38: Cleveland Blues vs. Boston Americans

Errors -- far too many Errors! The Cleveland Blues came into town and swept the 3-game series over the Boston Americans. While the games were all close (each decided by 1 run), a glaring aspect of the sweep is the fact that Boston committed a total of 13 errors in the series. Out of the 14 runs scored by the Blues, 7 runs were unearned.

Game 36: Boston pitcher Jesse Tannehill limited his post-game comments to just one word "Pathetic." When pressed by reporters on whether that was directed at himself or teammates, Tannehill just walked away. Looking at the box score, the frustration is understandable, as poor fielding allowed the Cleveland Blues (21-15) to top the Boston Americans (23-13) by a score of 5 to 4. In taking the loss, Tannehill (6-3) allowed 5 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits and 3 walks, finishing with a Game Score of 57. Cleveland pitcher Jim Hughes (1-2) picked up the win, tossing a complete game 10-hitter (3 walks) in which he allowed 4 runs and struck out 3; finishing with a Game Score of 51. Leading the Boston hitting attack was catcher Pat Chisham (3 for 4, Double, Triple, 2 Runs, 1 RBI) and shortstop Sport McAllister (2 for 4, 1 Run). The Blues were led by shortstop Zeke Wrigley (2 for 4, 2 Runs), pitcher Jim Hughes (1 for 3, 2 RBIs), and third baseman Harry Wolverton (1 for 5, 2 RBIs).

Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #7 / Career: #7)

Game 37: Despite facing Cleveland ace "Wild Bill" Donovan, Boston hitters were able to smash 11 hits and draw 4 walks, yet at the end of the day they came up short. Mounting a late-inning rally, the Blues (22-15) eked out a 4 to 3 victory over the Americans (23-14). In picking up the win, Donovan picked up his 8th win of the year (8-2) while allowing 3 runs and finished with a Game Score of 53. Boston pitcher Fred Klobedanz (6-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing 4 runs (3 earned), striking out 1 and a Game Score of 55. Boston centerfielder Bill Lange went 3 for 4, blasting a solo-shot for his first HR of the season. Cleveland leftfielder Jimmy Sheckard provided firepower, going 2 for 4 with a Double and 2 Runs.

Player of the Game: Bill Donovan

Game 38: Like the previous 2 games, Boston (23-15) out hit the Blues (23-15) yet again came up short in the end, losing 5 to 4. Cleveland right fielder Dusty Miller had a tremendous day at the plate, going 2 for 4 (1 Run and 2 RBIs) with a 4th inning blast that would ultimately prove to be the game winning run. Blues pitcher Bill Duggleby (5-3) went the distance, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 10 hits to finish with a Game Score of 56. Boston pitcher Cy Young (4-4) was saddled with the loss, allowing 5 runs (2 earned) over 8 innings and Game Score of 54. Al Orth tossed the final inning in relief of Young. John Farrell (3 for 4, Double, 1 RBI), Bill Lange (2 for 5, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI), and Fred Clarke (2 for 4, Double, 2 Runs, 1 RBI, 1 Walk, and league-leading .411 batting average) led Boston's hitting attack, while the Blues were led by Jimmy Sheckard (2 for 4, 1 Run, 1 RBI) and Dusty Miller (2 for 5, HR, 1 Run, 2 RBI).

Player of the Game: Bill Duggleby

Week 6 Team Power Rankings

A familiar face at the top of the Power Rankings, as the Boston Beaneaters regained the lead with a solid week of wins. The Cleveland Blues had the biggest gain on the week, moving up 4 spots from 6th to 2nd, while the Detroit Tigers (1st to 4th) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (10th to 13th) each fell 3 spots.

Games 39 - 41: Boston Americans vs. Milwaukee Brewers

Another tough series, as Boston dropped 2 of 3 games (each 1 run losses) to the Brewers. While it has been a combination of factors that has led to a 3-7 record in the last 10 games (and there are still a lot of games left to play), the Americans need to turn things around if they want to stay in contention for the American League lead.

Game 39: A pitchers duel had the Boston Americans (23-16) and the Milwaukee Brewers (12-27) locked in a scoreless game heading into the bottom of the 8th inning. That all changed when Milwaukee second baseman Jim Connor smacked a double off of Boston pitcher Noodles Hahn (7-4) to drive in the game's lone run. Frank Owen (5-6) picked up the win for the Brewers, baffling Boston all day and limiting the team to just 5 hits and 2 walks. Hahn (8.0 IP with 1 earned runs, 5 hits, 2 walks, 6 strikeouts) finished with a Game Score of 72, while Owen (9.0 IP, allowing 5 hits, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts) finished with a Game Score of 81. Milwaukee's Jimmy Barrett had a nice day at the plate (2 for 4, Triple), while Jesse Hoffmeister (2 for 4) led Boston's limited hitting attack.

Player of the Game: Frank Owen

Game 40: Despite coming into the series having the worst record in the American League, the Milwaukee Brewers (13-27) again topped the Boston Americans (23-17), this time by a score of 2 to 1. Jack Sutthoff (3-6) allowed 1 run on 5 hits and 2 walks, striking out 5 to pick up the win; Game Score of 76. Boston pitcher Jesse Tannehill (6-4) took the hard-luck loss, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits to finish with a Game Score of 68. The Brewers were led by Patsy Donovan (2 for 4, Triple, 1 RBI), Jimmy Barrett (2 for 4), and Kip Selbach (2 for 4), while the Americans were led by Frank Chance (2 for 4, 1 Run).

Player of the Game: Jack Sutthoff

Game 41: It was a rainy day in Milwaukee, but the weather didn't affect Boston (24-17) as they topped the Brewers (13-28) by a score of 3 to 1. Fred Klobedanz (7-3) allowed just 1 run (0 earned) on 3 hits and 3 walks (Game Score of 79) to pick up the win. Tom Hughes (2-9) took the loss, allowing 1 run (earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks to finish with a Game Score of 74. Milwaukee relief pitcher Patsy Flaherty allowed 2 runs (both earned) on 3 hits in his 1 inning pitched.

Player of the Game: Fred Klobedanz (Season: #3 / Career: #3)

Did OOTP Get It Right?

I am looking for some guidance on whether OOTP v23 assigned the loss correctly. The way I read the game log, Hughes was removed before the first batter came to the plate. With Flaherty facing all six batters and allowing the 2 runs, should he (and not Hughes) get tagged for the loss?

Is "Line Score" the same as "Box Score"? If so, it was posted above as Game 41 (May 14, 1901). If not, will need a little guidance on how to find it.
Thanks, CH
