Bishop (1914)
I've got a photo of Bishop (https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=bishop006---) with the 1914 Superior club, cropped from a team photo I found online (http://www.nebaseballhistory.com/superior1914.html). This photo was published in the Nebraska State Journal on June 14, 1914 with the players identified; it is also the basis for the photo in the Reach and Spalding guides from 1915. According to Baseball-Reference, his full name was William F. Bishop, and he played with Muskogee in 1916. If you look at his card in the Sporting News Index, they indicate he also played with Hopkinsville in 1910 and Fairbury in 1915. Newspaper reports from the time support the Superior -> Fairbury -> Muskogee connection.
The Hopkinsville newspaper gives the name of their pitcher as Walter F. Bishop. When he signed with Superior prior to the 1914 season, the papers reported he played with St. Louis in 1913; the newspaper in St. Louis referred to him as "Al Bishop" during the 1913 season, but when they reported he signed with Superior, they called him "Henry Bishop", as did the newspaper in Superior. Late in the season, the Superior newspaper referred to him as W.F. Bishop. When he signed with Fairbury in 1915, the papers there called him George, then Adam. And Muskogee called him Walter before calling him Will. What I'm hoping to find is a photo of him with Hopkinsville and/or with Muskogee, so I can confirm at least that they are all the same player. Then maybe I can figure out what his name actually was. I'm leaning towards William, but youneverknow. Follow-up: This player is William Frank Bishop, born William Bischoff on August 5, 1888 in St. Louis, MO. He was identified in an article in the Longview News-Journal on October 26, 1971 (pg. 7) upon the occasion of his being recognized as a World War I veteran. The article described his as a former professional pitcher for "the Jackson Michigan club, St. Louis and the Federal League and the Superior Nebraska baseball club." He died September 22, 1975 in Longview, Texas. Last edited by prewinter; 06-16-2022 at 07:37 PM. |

William Schellerman ca 1893
This cabinet photo has been floating around the internet for years unidentified. I took the time last week to try and figure out who this player wearing a Cleveland Spiders uniform might be. It looked to be the road jersey for the 1892-1893 Spiders and looking through rosters of Cleveland I noticed they were carrying a young pitcher from Buffalo named William Schellerman. He was expected to make the team and participated in Spring Training throughout their Southern League exhibition games. He was released prior to April 15th, 1893 when John Clarkson returned to the team. But he was there long enough to get his picture taken. I attach that, along with his obituary photo from 1909.

We've had Eddie Knoblauch (Chuck's uncle) in the thread as a 1949 Tulsa Oiler, wayyy back on page 2.
But Eddie (2015 career minor league hits) started that season as a Houston Buff, as he'd been since 1942. (With a timeout for WWII.) Here he is with a Buffalo on his chest: ![]() |

Speaking of Buffaloes…
Here's Billy Williams in 1960, his sole season in Houston gear:

![]() And, speaking of Buffs with famous relatives, here's John Hernandez (father of Keith) for the 1947 Houston team. You may note that, unlike the pic of "Juan" (as Keith called him) with OKC in 1948-49 that's posted back in the thread, Hernandez isn't wearing glasses here. That's because he didn't develop blurred vision until after the 1947 season. Allegedly, the glasses he was given were an improper prescription, and by the time the issue was resolved, Hernandez had lost his chance of going any farther than the Texas League and had even suffered damage to his eyes. So always check your specs, I expect. |

Pete Pavich
Pete Pavich was a third baseman who appeared on the NY Giants' spring roster in 1946. For years, I've been looking for a halfway decent photo of him. I had previously found a couple of blurry shots of him in his high school basketball uniform and one in his high school baseball uniform that gave no definition to the details of his face. This photo shows him with the Richmond Colts and lets us know that he wore glasses. It's from the Richmond Times-Dispatch of June 25, 1946.

Mertens, O'Connor and Wallenkamp
Jack Mertens (https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=merten002joh), Pat O'Connor (https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=oconno003pat) and Ben Wallenkamp, three young players from St. Louis signed by Decatur for the 1903 season. These photos were published in the St. Louis Republic on January 18, 1903 (pg. 21).
Pat O'Connor was the brother of Jack O'Connor (1887 - 1910), who managed for the St. Louis Browns in 1910. Jack O'Connor was blacklisted by organized baseball for instructing the third baseman to play deep against Nap Lajoie in a season-ending double header in 1910, allowing Lajoie to get 7 bunt hits in an attempt to pass Ty Cobb for the batting title. He successfully sued the Browns for $5000 in 1913 for terminating his contract over the incident. Jack Mertens played his final season in professional baseball (under the name Jack Collins) in 1913 for the St. Louis Terriers of the renegade Federal League, under manager Jack O'Connor. As far as I can tell, Ben Wallenkamp did not make the Decatur club in 1903, and he is not listed on any roster in Baseball-Reference. |

Lew Deardorff
Pitcher Lew Deardorff was with the 1951 Lockport (NY) Reds of the Pennsylvania-Ontario-New York (PONY) League for about a month. Prior to that, he was the ace pitcher for the University of Miami Hurricanes. In that capacity, in March of 1951, he pitched in an exhibition game for Miami against the Brooklyn Dodgers' "B" team. He hurled seven innings and yielded only one run and four hits. The opposing pitcher was Ralph Branca. Eight of the nine Dodgers in the lineup would have major league careers. They included luminaries such as Gil Hodges, Billy Cox, George Shuba, and Don Hoak.
Lewis Deardorff died in Rockville, MD on December 7, 2022. He was born January 15, 1929. The photo of Deardorff comes from the Miami Herald of April 23, 1952. https://digital.la84.org/digital/col...id/55396/rec/5 |
