Does the 5 year waiting period for guys to make the Hall of Fame actually accomplish anything? Will bad things happen I lower it to a year or 2? What if I do away with it altogether?

I've never seen a player unretire without it being done manually, so unless you are using "retire according to history" I see no issue with it. Although why would you want to do so and what would it achieve are two questions that come to mind.
