BNN Weekly Report

This Week in the CBO, BMU, and GBRL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

26 November 2302

Moe Cronin's 'Forever Good' Plan

Diamond City Swatters owner Moe Cronin left no doubt when he said before the 2302 Rookie Draft that he had targeted one player and was going to do whatever it takes to get that player.

While draft-day draft picks are not allowed, teams can trade away players and picks following the rookie draft, and that is just what Cronin did. Just a day after the pick was announced that the Swatters had drafted 1B Priz Worden, they announced a trade. Draft-day analysts were surprised that Diamond City selected Worden since 1B is a position that the Swatters are already loaded at with star Oren Gep and top prospect Needham Tickler.

As it turned out, that targeted player Cronin wanted was not his independent travel ball pick, whom Cronin described as the best available, but local BYDL Diamond City Newsboys player, RF Magnum Peaeye. Peaeye, whom many OSA scouts believe will be an "elite starting right fielder," is also a player that Cronin had developed a relationship with. In fact, the Swatters factory that produces the Commonwealth's baseball bats produced a special bat for Peaeye called the Selleck Special.

Peaeye was a star with the Newsboys, finishing his career in the BYDL with a .374/.444/.678 line, 64 home runs, 120 extra-base hits, 205 runs, and 247 RBI. His 309 hits and 561 total bases are both the top all-time in the BYDL.

For the rights to Peaeye, drafted 15th overall by Railroad League rivals, the Vault 81 Dwellers, Diamond City sent Worden, OF Josh Green, and a 2303 1st-round pick. Green, an 8th-round pick in the 2300 Rookie Draft, was lost on the depth chart with the Atomatoys Factory Buttercups of the GBRL, but he was considered an interesting prospect.

Speaking of depth, the Swatters look to be built for a long-term impact as a good team in the CBO. But what about their other prospects? Cronin was candid about that too.

"We need depth," Cronin said.

That depth Cronin is referring to is a BMU team, the Natick Banks Big Leaguers, who are not loaded with players ready to step in if starters go down. Sure, there is one-time star RF Wayne Lacy, who led the SCA in home runs in 2298 with 37, but there is not much else that can step in and be effective.

Certain positions are in trouble should a starter go down. After Gep, the next best 1B option is Crater Landlubber who has yet to start a game in seven CBO seasons. 2B Jim Synthseeker, SS Wally Warwick, and 3B Allen Bishop all have no serviceable backups to fill in. The only read in good shape on offense is the outfield where Cody Grime and Micahaelangelo Sandifer can contribute significant help.

The mound is similar. Diamond City has one of the best pitching staffs in baseball in Sheng Kawolski, X10-44 Mannson, City Moore, and Tyler Powers. However, if one or more go down, they would have to pull Noah Williams out of their bullpen or convert closer Josh Samm to a starter. As far as the BMU team is concerned, Timmy Gilded may be called upon, but he sported a 5.55 ERA in 2302 with Natick Banks.

Cronin has left no doubt that he will be wheeling and dealing prospects this offseason. Players on the block could include Tickler and another highly-ranked 1B prospect in Bee Behnke, an 8th-round pick in 2301 out of the PJPL who has started to make strides. They also took RF Nathan Hellelf in the third round of this year's draft, a wildcard pick to find himself in the CBO eventually. Other potential players to move include SP Lok Durd, SP Mike Johnston, CL Dummy Potluck, C Jason Grubic, and 1B Nine Claud.

"If the Swatters ain't winnin', we ain't winnin'," Cronin said.

And if they ain't dealin', they ain't dealin', either.

1 December 2302 - Nahant

The Island Shaped Like a Dolphin

When I sat in Boston Public Library to research the island of Nahant, one of the first mentions was that it was the "dolphin-shaped island." What is a dolphin, you ask? Well, it is what we now call ghoul whales, or gwhales, one of the ocean's few mammal species. That is the shape of Nahant, the dolphin-shaped island.

A shot of Nahant from a vertibird around 2288

I traveled to Nahant on the shortest path possible, straight east on the rail from Diamond City to the Harbor, on a ferry past the Boston Airport and Nordhagen Beach to Nahant. Nahant is across an isthmus, a long, narrow stretch of land connecting the island to the mainland, from Lynn.

Upon arriving at the wharf, I was struck by the differences between the photos I found on file in the library and how the wharf appeared upon the world's demise in 2077. While the wharf had grown in size, its current usage was limited due to the rusted-out ships still in port.

Nahant Wharf needs some work

The ferry docked, and I was greeted by the Nahant mayor, Bucky Neckstrap, who was going to show me around the island.

"It's small but cozy," Mayor Neckstrap said. "We can get around this place in no time at all if we stick to the roads."

The island has few buildings intact in all, though Nahant is farther away from the blast center of the Glowing Sea. You can see that there are cliffs along the northside where entire sections of the island collapsed into the ocean. Mayor Neckstrap points at one mansion built up and more pristine than any other building on the island.

Pre-War Nahant

"That's Croup Manor," he says. "Your friend Nate [Howard] killed off the family that was still in the basement there. They were all ghouls. After that, he made it a settlement location for his visits to the island."

The settlement has now expanded to the entirety of the island, with people now occupying each of the standing structures throughout the island. There is a sense that Nahant will continue to grow beyond the current occupation with smaller shacks continuously added onto and then used as multi-family homes. Howard likes the place and has already overseen the expansion of the baseball park.

Speaking of the park, it is on what was once a "golf course." Golf was a game for the wealthy of yesteryear where people used L-shaped sticks to hit balls long distances into a cup. It was once a place lush with nature, full of greens and ponds and birds everywhere. Now, it is a large open area where the ballpark, businesses, and residences have popped up.

The greens of the golf course, pre-War

The ballpark also has a specific name, Village Uncle Park. Howard said the name was the best fit because of a story written by one of the Boston greats of the past, Nathaniel Hawthorne. Howard has described the island as a significant one in history. He also mentioned another writer, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who spent significant time on the island. It's not Walden Pond for its literary significance, but Nahant is a place where writers spent some time smithing words. I can almost feel the muses of literature pulling at me here.

We left Village Uncle Park to make our way east. On the southern side of the road, we pass the largest establishment for food and drink I have seen in the Commonwealth, the Nahant Bar and Restaurant. It also has a large wharf area where local fishermen dock, clean their catches, and sell them to the restaurant. Nahant Bar and Restaurant is the major hangout area of Nahant. Just past the restaurant, we see the Village Uncle Inn, where I will be staying for the night. It is a small but cozy place for sleeping, and it is a short walk to eating next door.

As we continue east, we pass the renovated Nahant All Faiths Chapel on the north side of the street. This chapel is one of the few buildings that is not buzzing with people, but, as Mayor Neckstrap states, it is for anyone who wants to worship anything.

We finally reach the end of the island where the most interesting place on Nahant lies, the Nahant Oceanological Society. Pre-war, this place began as a place to protect sealife. However, before the bombs even dropped, there was a discovery that local sealife was beginning to mutate. What we now know as mirelurks were actually a variety of other animals, including fish, crabs, shrimp, and lobsters.

The Nahant Oceanological Society was also responsible for discovering pre-War radiation in Lake Quannapowitt on the mainland. They were the whistleblowers of their time but were largely ignored. Even today, we see remnants of the irradiated waters not at all as a result of the fallout.

A final note about the Nahant Oceanological Society, which is up and running again: the pre-War Handys that were the tour guides of the facility are still in operation. Mayor Neckstrap and Dr. Gloria Aqua, who runs the facility, thought it best not to reprogram the robots from their pre-War spiels.

"We feel like we can go back 200 years in time to feel what it was like," Mayor Neckstrap said. "This place is historical, and we want to preserve that history."

Nahant Bar and Restaurant

The day had grown long, so I joined Mayor Neckstrap at the Nahant Bar and Restaurant. We had a nice helping of lurkcakes, silt beans, and Nuka-Cola Dark. After, I wished the mayor adieu and headed to my room at the Village Uncle Inn. It was a nice trip, and a place where I would love to return to watch baseball. If Village Uncle Park is to be expanded, then there is no doubt the CBO will be here at some point. Maybe one day in the future, I can snack on popmaize and drink more Nuka-Cola Darks while watching current #1 overall pick Stormin Normin MacDonald hit balls out the park.

Regardless, my trip to the dolphin-shaped island will not be my last. After all, those lurkcakes were just right.

2303 - CBO Year VIII

BNN Weekly Report

This Week in the CBO, BMU, and GBRL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

1 January 2303

CBO Year VIII Begins

We're still more than a month away from the first pitch tournament pitch of the season, but the 8th iteration of the Commonwealth Baseball Organization will begin.

Here are a few tidbits to know as we enter the first day of the 2303 year (and my inevitable first hangover of the year).

The biggest news is that the CBO will expand its schedule from 108 games to 120 games. This involves all teams now facing off. Teams from the North Charles Association will play each of the teams from the South Charles Association in a home-away combination to begin the season. As Commissioner Nate Howard, this is the beginning of interassociation play in the CBO. In the 2303 season, The Brotherhood League will visit the Minutemen League and then host the Railroad League. The Institute League will visit the Railroad League and then host the Minutemen League.

A number of constructions are underway throughout the Commonwealth with continued work on the Glowing Sea Dome near Vault 95, the Cambridge construction near C.I.T. Ruins displacing a BMU team, the downtown construction near Goodneighbor in what is currently Postal Square, and the expansion of the stadium in Nahant.

Additionally, clearing has nearly ended and construction on working underground rails have begun. Serious work has begun on stations in College Square, Revere Beach, Fens Way, Quincy, Park Street Station, Andrew Station, and West Roxbury Station.

There has been one location change as the former C.I.T. Ruins Refractors of the BMU had to leave because of stadium construction on the C.I.T. grounds. Thus, the Refractors have taken over the Cambridge Eyebots name for the 2303 season and have moved into Cambridge Polymer Field. The former Eyebots of the GRBL have taken on the Refractors name, but they relocated to the Lexington Synths' practice field for the 2303 season. The Refractors will find a more permanent home later.

In addition, Commissioner Nate Howard has changed up nearly all affiliations in the BMU to give variety to location and broader followings around the baseball players of the Commonwealth. The affiliations are listed below:

Brotherhood League
County Crossing - Eastlake
Easy Town - Corvega
Finch Farm - Nahant (no change)
Nordhagen Beach - Cabot House
Salem - Fiddler's Green
The Slog - Boston Common

Institute League
Abernathy - Bunker Hill
Concord - College Square (no change)
Fort Hagen - Forest Grove
Lexington - Vault 95
Starlight - Haymarket Mall
Sunshine Tidings - Breakheart Banks

Minutemen League
Atom - Greentop Nursery
Goodneighbor - Cambridge (was CIT Ruins)
Jamaica Plain - Somerville Place
Quincy - Malden
University Point - Graygarden
Warwick - Charles View (no change)

Railroad League
Diamond City - Natick Banks (no change)
Egret - Trinity Plaza
FHE - Mystic Pines
Oberland - Union Hope
Roxbury - Taffington Boathouse
Vault 81 - Everett

Like Orange, I really love the Settlements Today feature - but didn't realise you'd done 53 of them. Great work!
On the recruitment front, I see the Boys traded for Scruffy Newell. My uncle's surname was Newell - though he wasn't scruffy! - and he was a good guy. So I'm hoping for great things from the young fella!!

Thank you! It is almost time to finally explore Mount Desert Island (Vim! League). The number of images seems to be limited for an updated MDI, but I can make do. The fog!

2303 News - Vim! League

Vim! View

Veracious, Vivacious, Vainglorious Vision of the Vim! Leagues

by Vikky Vail

14 January 2303

Old Longfellow Sails Off into the Sunset

It is with great sadness that we report the end of a long, productive life in the great legend of Far Harbor, Old Longfellow, 89. A burial at sea procession was held for Longfellow at the beach near his cabin.

Longfellow was born on Mount Desert Island and had become the island's fog guide during the heavy fogs of the 2280s. He was a friend of the Harbormen though he never claimed to be one of them. He was also a friend of Nate Howard during the raids on the Trappers and creatures of the island. He credits Howard with "taming the island."

Longfellow owned the Vim! League franchise, the Cranberry Island Hermit Crabs. While Longfellow did not have much interest in baseball, he did credit the Vim! League with bringing the islands back to life and vowed to pour his remaining years into its success. Commissioner Small Bertha has said that the league would hold a special ceremony for Old Longfellow on opening day of the 2302 season.

The team will now be under the control of Boxer Sweet, who was one of the investors in the Vim! factory reopening in 2289. Boxer originally was a Railroad operative working in Acadia but decided to make her home in Acadia after the Commonwealth Alliance among all four major factions of the Commonwealth. That also meant extra protections in Mount Desert Island, though the four factions are not stationed on Mount Desert Island.

Hmmm, hadn't really thought about it, but I guess chars dying off, of old age of anything, is indeed in the cards as this progresses. Was still kind of a surprise.

That fellow was long in the tooth and old. He lived a good life. He would probably say that he's "gettin' too damn old for this runnin' around." Anyway, he asked, and the island did bury him with a bottle. He'll be missed.

February 2302 - News and Notes

BNN Weekly Report

This Week in the CBO, BMU, and GBRL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

1 February 2303

CBO Locked and Loaded for 2302

With February here, that means live baseball is coming soon! The 2303 Nuka Cup and Season Pass tournaments are all set with teams gearing up for seeing some action and looking to see which teams might emerge and which stars are emerging.

The four Nuka Cup sites for 2303 will be the four finalist teams from the 2302 season: University Point as the #1 overall seed, Nordhagen Beach as the #2 seed, Jamaica Plain as the #3 seed, and Fort Hagen as the #4 seed.

Joining the Deathclaws will be in order of seed: Finch Farm, Vault 81, Concord, Egret, and Abernathy.

The Party Boys will host the following teams: Roxbury, Sunshine Tidings, Goodneighbor, Salem, and Warwick.

The following five teams will visit the Red Rockets' home: County Crossing, Atom, Lexington, Quincy, and The Slog.

Finally, the Silver Shroud are the hosts for te following five: Diamond City, Starlight, FHE, Easy Town, and Oberland.

Each of the first five rounds will feature three-game series with the team winning the series winning at least two games. The sixth round is a series between the Winners bracket and Losers bracket with the winners bracket starting with a 1-0 advantage. In the sixth round, the first team to three wins is in. Winners of each bracket then go to the semifinals where the top-ranked teams host three-game series. The same goes for the 3rd place matchups and the Nuka Cup Finals.

Last season, the Starlight Lady Killers defeated the County Crossing Bloodbugs to take the 2302 Nuka Cup.

Bradberton and Nuka-World will host the 2303 Season Pass Preseason Tournament with all 18 teams from the Nuka World League and Vim! League matching up. They play a double-elimination tournament where each matchup is a one-game series.

The Far Harbor Ghoul Whales defeated the Cranberry Island Hermit Crabs in last year's Season Pass Tournament. Speaking of Cranberry Island, BNN would like to pass on its condolences to the owner of Cranberry Island, Old Longfellow, who passed away recently.

Commissioner Nate Howard expressed his thoughts on Longfellow. "He was a friend, a mentor, and a damn good man," Howard said. "I'll miss him. Have a whisky on the Eternal Sea, my friend."

There has been quite a bit of activity around the Commonwealth in preparation for the 2303 season. I will list some of the transactions below. Later this month, I will post some notes about my travels and write up a couple more of the popular Settlements Today segments before the regular season begins.

A few tidbits and things to look for in the preseason tournament:

New Oberland GM, Chris "Tickhead" Feinberg, has been very aggressive this offseason. He has stated that he knows that the T-51s are not ready to win the championship, but they are ready to compete. Coaches in Oberland are also raving about second-year player, 1B Jumping Jehoshaphat Cobb of the GBRL's Lynn Fortune Finders. Cobb hit 31 home runs in 69 appearances for the Finders last season. Hitting coach Clucky Gilchrist has said that Cobb is hitting almost everything out the park this practice season. In other words, the 18-year-old could find himself in the CBO soon with his power.

Moe Cronin has publicly railed on WRVR and Diamond City Radio against a proposed change for the 2304 season. He is set to appear on the BNN channel next week. The rule proposed would be a Protection List that teams would submit each season, making players not included on the list a part of a redraft each offseason. Cronin has argued that the rule punishes teams for developing their players and drafting well. He seems to have some support around the league, but the decision will be made based on a majority of owners agreeing or disagreeing to the change. Owners will meet on Monday, March 2, to finalize scheduling decisions and vote on any proposed changes.

Visiting Vim! League Vacation Venues

by Vikky Vail

2 February 2303

Welcome to Far Harbor

We would call ourselves a private place that is not very welcoming of outsiders, but that reality has changed in the last 15 years. You see, when a ship first pulled up to our harbor far away from the Commonwealth, we were not just wary of outsiders, we were downright weary, too.

Far Harbor Welcome Sign

Most people who arrived by boat had great visions of conquering the island. Far Harbor was the place they arrived. It was the place they took their charge. It was the place where many refused the assistance of the island's guide, Old Longfellow. Except for a subset of visitors, we never saw them again. Sure, sure, some were out there lost in or to the fog. Many were just killed or consumed. And then there was the Kasumi Nakano saga.

You may know of it, so I won't bore you with the vivid details. What I will venture into is how one legend of the Commonwealth came here with a peeled-up synth sleuth named Nick Valentine. That changed the fortune of the island. This place, Mount Desert Island; this town, pre-war known as Bar Harbor and now as Far Harbor; and this vixen, by the name of Vikki Vail were all changed forever. The very land itself changed. This year, we are voyaging the island, but first, the capital of the land, Far Harbor.

The Harbor View from a Boat

In 2288, when Nate Howard arrived, Far Harbor was the last of regular humanity on The Island. The fog had taken over everywhere else, and it was filled with nasties: Trappers, super mutants, ghouls, fogcrawlers, anglers, gulpers, hermit crabs, and all others kind of hungry creatures looking for an easy meal.

A Vision of Pre-Perfection, Far Harbor's Wall in 2288

The island was made up of a group of people who called themselves the Harbormen, all under the guidance of our benevolent mayor, Captain Olivia Avery. The young but mature beyond her ears Harbormen leader was Small Bertha, who supported Nate Howard in his efforts to tame The Island.

There were others beyond Small Bertha and Old Longfellow who took leadership. The Mariner worked to keep Far Harbor intact. Eventually, Mitch, now know as Mitch Beerslinger, took up on Nate Howard's quest and repopulated the freed Acadia National Park Visitors Center area.

The Last Flank Where Mitch Voraciously and Sometimes Viciously Slung Beers

While there was a wall that kept Far Harbor's residents safe, there was also a larger area beyond the wall. Now that fog condensers are everywhere and the fog is not what is was in 2288, those areas house additional settlers and businesses, including the world-famous and operational Beaver Creek Lanes bowling alley. It's The Island's biggest hangout joint to go with the theater at Eden Meadows.

Beaver Creek Lanes

If you find yourself visiting old Maine, be sure to drop in. Get your fishing gear ready, wet your windpipe with some lukewarm beer, toss a few balls down the lanes, visit the mirelurk boiling pot, and know that you are in the best damn settlement in the Commonwealth, Far Harbor.

One if by Land, and Two if by Sea - Revere Beach

Revere is everything the Commonwealth of history represents. Named after the man who made the midnight ride, Paul Revere, the town of Revere is steeped in history. The partner to Nordhagen Beach in the former Winthrop area, Revere Beach has built its post-Howard society to be a tourist paradise of beach-based relaxation.

Revere Beach Boardwalk

The biggest draw is the "Pier at Revere." This renovated boardwalk is home to a number of eateries, bars, and arcades. One of the best-known places is the Beerthirty Saloon, the namesake for and sponsor of the BYDL's Beerthirty Sippers. Revere Beach is also home to the GBRL's Revere Beach Celtics, an affiliate of the University Point Deathclaws.

Revere Beach also has other history of interest. It was home to America's first naval battle in the American Revolution. Revere Beach was also America's first public beach, leading to a history of tourism. At one point, it was the home to a number of amusement rides much like in Kiddie Kingdom and other parks of Nuka-World.

I made my way to Revere Beach via the ferry system from Boston Harbor. Just like my recent trip to Nahant, it was the fastest way there. In time, the Revere Beach Station will reopen, giving people in the Revere Beach-Nordhagen Beach-Easy Town areas more traveling options to and from Downtown Boston. For now, the station does not look like much since the work is being performed underground.

My stay was the Beachview Inn. The name was fitting. My small room featured a balcony overlooking the boardwalk and beach. The Inn also is one of a few around the Commonwealth that has taken on the "bed and breakfast" mentality of giving a person a place to sleep and then have a delicious hot meal in the morning. I checked in at the Beachview Inn, snapped a picture (below), and then went to experience the vibes of the boardwalk at the Pier in Revere.

Revere is still a small settlement, but the entirety of the settlement seems to revolve around tourism. Not only were there a number of eateries, but the number of other types of stores were prevalent. One interesting place was Big Al's Sporting Goods made with a renovated sign from pre-War Revere Beach. It featured a lot of guns, ammo, and fishing gear.

Two other renovated signs of the only three on the strip were Buddy's that features spaghetti, ravioli, and beer. We do not have any real spaghetti or ravioli, two staples of pre-War America. We do have noodles and beer, though, and that is what Buddy's specializes in. Right next to it is Burger Hut that features hamburgers, ice cream, and shakes on its sign. We are a little short on those, too, as they were pre-War. However, Gordon Bluefever, the owner of Burger Hut, has made razorgrain buns and Brahmin burgers with sides of fired tatos and several Vim! pops imported from Far Harbor.

The Three Businesses with Renovated Signs

There are no amusement rides currently, but there are plenty of renovated arcade games. The Beerthity Saloon has several of those games, with the most popular one being a game that people throw basketballs through a rim to score points. Scoring points on the game gives players tickets that they can cash in for discounted or free beer. A few patrons have made it their mission to "drink for free" by playing up to 100 caps per day on the arcade games.

After I spent 50 caps on the basketball game, I won 12 tickets, which gave me a 1-cap discount on a 10-cap Gwinnett Stout. Seems like a deal as good as betting on the bots at Easy City Downs.

After enjoying my day, I returned to the Beachview Inn and went to bed early to prepare for the sunrise in case the day was clear enough to see it. In the morning, I woke up. Unfortunately, the day was not clear. I made my way downstairs to a breakfast of queenlurk claws, pickled maize, and mutfruit pie. I then made my way to the ferry for the return to Diamond City.

In all, I would recommend everyone in Boston to make their way to the Pier at Revere. It may cost a lot of caps for the experience, but it is one that the whole family will remember.

Approaches to the 2303 Season

For the 2303 season, I have to temper my desire to oversaturate my league with details. I thought I might want to go back and see individual scores or results, but I don't find myself really caring. I wish to make stamps in time. In order to shorten the amount of time it takes to complete a season, I may go for more barebones approaches. I need to think about how. Monthly reports seem too seldom. Weekly reports seem too frequent unless I maybe leave off details (results of all games, for example). Maybe I could give reports every two weeks which technically gives a timestamp of the last 10 games since most weeks involve 5-game slates. Yes, typing out my thoughts helps.

For all other leagues--BMU, GBRL, BYDL, CCYL, PJPL, NWL, APL, BBL, VL, MDIL, and MYL--I believe I will give monthly updates.

This seems to be a sound plan for progressing forward until after my evenings and weekends are mostly free. It did drive me crazy that the 2302 season took me nearly an entire year to complete (April 2022 through February 2023). I'd like to get no fewer than two seasons completed in a calendar year, but ideally more than that. Let's see if this helps.
