I mean, they not in regular historical.

From what I can tell, this is when importing him manually into a game, right? There's likely a bug here with a specific setting combination(s) involved. Since there are like 500 different combinations though, we need as much info as possible on the specific settings and situations where he doesn't look right.

Here's a historical game that I started in 1914. As you can see, Ruth goes from being one of the best pitchers in the game to...nowhere by 1918, only to re-emerge in the PCL in the early 20s:

When Ruth didn't turn up on the leaderboards, I assumed he was hurt or something. He did miss a few months in 1916, but mostly he just wasn't good enough to play anymore...for years, until he started knocking around the low minors in the 1930s. Say what?

This, of course, makes me wonder what else the database/game has wrong...

I didn't touch anything; all the settings are the same the game shipped with. (And why would that matter, anyway?)

Because whether the development engine is on or off and what levels you have recalc set to make all the difference in the world in how players develop (or don't).

With development turned on, and recalc turned off, for example, players develop completely randomly and not necessarily like they did in real life at all. The game just uses their initial ratings, but after that, how they develop is up to chance, just like in a fictional league or a league simming ahead from 2023.

If you turn on recalc, then Ruth will become a hitter when he did in realty (more likely not) and perform more or less how he really did. But with recalc off, he may or may not become a hitter and may be better or worse than in reality.

So basically, try another sim, but make sure this time when on step 3 of the wizard, make sure to select 'recalculate player ratings before each season using real stats', and you'll see Ruth switch from pitching to batting in 1920 and perform at least reasonably close to how he did in real life.

But why would it affect Ruth and nobody else? (I don't remember ever having to "turn on recalc" in order to get accurate stats/ratings in any other version of the game...)

We'll look into whether there are other issues. Ruth would be special in that he started as a pitcher and then changed to a hitter, so depending on the setup, it's possible something happened to prevent that from happening.

Yeah, it's always been necessary to have recalc on to get historical performance in past versions. I guess maybe it just hasn't always been in the wizard like it is now, it used to just be a setting.

I guess not having it on would affect other folks too, not just Ruth, if you look around enough.

Just to make sure there's no issue though, I just simmed a test league with recalc on, starting in 1914 through to 1923 and there were no issues. Ruth turned into a dominant hitter in 1918 and entirely stopped pitching in 1919.

There was actually an issue where recalc was not working properly for some historical settings that likely caused what you were seeing with Ruth.

This should be fixed in the new patch we've just released.
