BUT PETE STAYS WHERE HE IS.

And Squirrel too. And Guillorme. I don't assume we'd trade Alvarez in any scenario.

Mets allegedly get the Buzzstros' top prospect, OF Drew Gilbert, and their #4 prospect, OF Ryan Clifford, for Kate Upton's hot bod. And, er, Verlander, too.

Pretty sweet. I'd have taken Drew Gooden and Ryan Langerhans.

Meanwhile, apparently The Ghost of Rich Hill was still pitching in Pittsburgh, but he's now been traded to the Padres. Write when you get there, Ghost!

(Ghosts can totally write. Just takes practice.)

Tommy Pham to the Snakes for another shortstop. See my rant on the previous page.

ESPn dude really likes Drew Gilbert.

I suppose two months of struggle in AA doesn't necessarily mean anything. But it does rather tarnish the shine, I say.

Oh no.

Drew Gilbert is this guy.

This guy.

THIS ******* guy.

METS!! WHY????

I've hated that dolt since he wasn't even a pro. Great. Someone kill me. Preferably before I have to watch the Mets lose 1-0 to KC. Oh too late, I just clicked on the video.

Edit: At least Pete's in the lineup. PHEW.

Wait, where's Nimmo? Who is "Ortega"?? HELP!!

Oh Nimmo's on the bench. PHEW.

Why is being a Mets fan so hard???

Oh. I don't follow college baseball, so I didn't know.

As stupid as saying the bad words was, I'm even more unhappy with the little jaw-drop theatrics. You're unhappy, we get it. Stop looking like a fish.

(We said we wanted Mike Trout, not an actual fish, bro.)

Full version, where the announcers stop criticizing the ump once they realize what was actually said.

Neither do I. But that was all over Youtube and the usual corners of the internet. I don't even know what a "Vol" is.

My snarky comment from back then was "when does eyeblack become blackface?" ...

Meanwhile, in the game from the freezer, so far Pete has taken a foul pop off his jaw and now Baxter McNeil tried to crash through the leftfield fence.

I've only watched baseball for like 12 years, so I ask the experts - when does the pain stop?

Does it ever?

"Well, Keith, [...] I don't know how often you have seen a walkoff balk, either."

First Mets game I ever watched live they lost on a walkoff balk. June 2011, night game @ Barves. R.A. Dickey started. D.J. Carrasco balked, also in the 10th.

Diory Hernandez scored, tells me bb-ref. His major league career ended just four days later.

Me, I'm still suffering.

University of Tennessee athletes are known as Volunteers ("Vols" for short) in honor of the Tennesseans who voluntarily went to assist the Texian settlers in their struggles against Mexico, from the defense of the Alamo (in which the famous backwoodsman Davey Crockett fought and perished) to the ensuing War for Texas Independence. When Texas was admitted into the Union in 1845, it was with a Tennessean (James Knox Polk) in the White House.

(I believe Tennessee sent three brigades of volunteers, which is why there are three stars on the Tennessee state flag.)

Of course, migration of Americans to Texas, beginning with Moses Austin, was less about building the Mexican economy and more about grabbing the land and expanding slavery to maintain the balance in the Senate between the industrial North and the agricultural South. The same for the Mexican War which Polk started by admitting Texas, which Mexico had issued an ultimatum against, but which ultimately expanded the USA out to California.

So not as deeply moral as Tennessee would like to claim it was, but do you want Dr. Pepper or not? (Takes sip of the Dr. Pepper on his side table, literally now.)

As state nicknames go, better than Razorbacks. Although not a patch on Golden Bears, I'll allow.

Ortega appears to be this guy, who has already been released by both the Yankees and the Rangers this season. This was the second time the Rangers had Ortega and asked themselves why, before ever playing him in a game. (He was waived by them in 2014.) Others who rethought Rafael are the Cardinals (2014) and the Padres (2016)

He did have the one good season with the Cubs in 2021, and he's a spring-like 32 years old.

(Seriously, Eppler? Seriously?)

I mean, at least they didn't splash dosh at Ortega. And we're down almost a full outfield (Canha, Pham gone; Marte, Locastro on DL).

The alternative would be Vogie roaming leftfield.

Cookie Crumbles, Jonathan Araúz, a couple of refuse selections in the pen, and *D.J. Stewart* batting second.

...

I have a lot of life choices to reconsider.

Fortunately, Manly Rob Manfred has ensured that the Athletics get an equal crack at the traveling laughingstocks, so they can keep pace with their draft rivals in KC.

(Or have we already donated a few Ws to Oakland? I'm not watching, as I constantly note.)

We did the Oakland Pathetics in April.

NYM 17, OAK 6
NYM 3, OAK 2
NYM 4, OAK 3 (10)

You can tell they tried their best to start the firesale early there.

I was pretty shocked to see suggestions he was/might be on the block. It would be entirely Metsy to let the only real slugger they've ever produced go across town to do the same thing for another decade. That might be my breaking point, and honestly MLB/the Mets haven't exactly kept me riveted this year with perpetual interleague.

That threat passed, unless they tried to peddle him over the winter. But Pete has looked pretty salty to me, and some of the high fives in the dugout with the other survivors looked like they were salty too. I hope Cohen and Buck had the sense to talk to Pete beforehand, although news reports sound like that didn't happen. A team meeting to say "we're trying to get better for next year" and "we wanted to get the 35+ guys out of here [in a way that doesn't violate state and federal laws]" would be in order, hopefully they thought of that too.

In conclusion, I'm thrilled they shot this broken horse of a season and shipped out the geezers/evaporating contracts, and if Pete is traded maybe there's no point to this modern MLB at all.

Pardon me while I put in several terse words on behalf of Mr. Darryl Eugene Strawberry, who went from #1 overall pick to Rookie of the Year to World Champion to back-to-back HR leader, despite a heck of a lot of distractions. (Some of which were Straw's own fault, but still.)

Yes, he "only" hit 39 taters when tying Dale Murphy for the crown in 1987, but it was a different game then. We went almost 30 years with only the one 50-hr season in the NL. (George Arthur Foster, 1977.)

And 1987 was the year when Jack Howell broke his bat and the ball still flew into the RF seats at Steinbrenner Stadium…but when they took the juice out of the ball the next year, Darryl hit three dingers on Opening Day (including one off of le Roof du Stade Olympique), and put up the same 39 as he had the year before. Only difference is, instead of tying with the Mormon Messiah, Straw led the league by ten.

No wonder he was a unanimous MVP…oh, wait. (Racism, etc. Look how Lenny Dykstra hustles! You know, he's the real star of the team! So what if he can't hit lefties? And I hear Darryl is a bad boy, but Scrappy Underdog Dykstra would never…)

Pardon my older-than-Taylor-Swift rage, but it's a longstanding issue. Grrr…

Why is Pete not signed yet? He should be locked up until 2030, at least.

Yet, AFAIK, nobody is even talking about this , Uncle Stevie is hoarding his cash for 40-year-old rental-arms and not even worried that waiting until the last minute to take care of Face of the Franchise Pete could end up biting the team like the Meg (and I don't mean Ryan). Insane.

The best thing Eppler/Stevie have done all year was cash-in the has-beens. One hopes that the $$$$ available prevents them from ever going full Pittsburgh, but I still worry.

(Even if I never see another game, it would just be embarrassingly annoying. Or annoyingly embarrassing. As I say, I'm not on top of the details, these days.)

My favorite comment about deadline day:

" the Mets were like the antagonist in a movie that sells weapons to both sides in a war."
