I am thinking about starting an alternate history game around 1980 where none of the teams go away. The main thing I am interested in is not having any teams relocate, but still having an expansion team in the location they would have relocated to. For example, Minnesota wouldn't lose their team in 1993 but Dallas would get an expansion team. I would want to rename the North Stars to the Wild at that point too.
Future expansions that overlap with existing teams (like the Wild example above) would be ignored and relocations like Atlanta to Winnipeg would be skipped since Winnipeg wouldn't have moved in the first place. The descriptions for the various team activation/deactivation/rename options (http://manuals.ootpdevelopments.com/...toricalediting) aren't entirely clear, or at least don't explain how I could accomplish this. Here is what I think I would have to do:
I presume that I will need to manually add teams (like the Dallas Stars in 1993) from time to time. Is this practical in the middle of a game or can this only be done when a game is started? I am also thinking about having enough players for all the teams, but shortening the draft a little should help with that. Has anyone else done anything like this, at least in part? With the settings as you have them above:
In 1993 the North Stars would automatically be renamed as Dallas and Dallas would retain the North Stars franchise history going forward. At that point you could add the Wild using the 'Add Historical Team' option. When you get to 2000 the Wild would not be re-created as they already exist. However, if you create the Wild in 1993 with the 'Add Team' option, when you get to 2000 the game will automatically add the duplicate historical version of the team as well. But you can just remove it again from the league structure page. The other option is if you want the North Stars/Wild to continue after 1993 with the North Stars franchise history. In that case you would need to edit the Dallas team page and rename it back to Minnesota Wild. Then create Dallas as a new team with 'Add Team'. In 2000 you would again get the Wild duplicated as it's considered a separate franchise from the North Stars. 'Add Historical Team' creates the historical franchise and includes any history from previous versions of that franchise. 'Add Team' creates a completely new franchise. Thank you! I did not know about the Add Historical Team option. Is there a way to disable all the relocations? If so, I could disable the Team Deactivation option, let the system add the expansion teams, and manually add the "expansion" teams to replace the historically relocated teams like Dallas.
I did some quick experiments and the Update Team Names option does prevent the relocation. I will have to tweak some stuff with the logos and colors, but the history is retained. I'll just have to create Dallas and other relocation destinations as new teams. Last edited by Akaitatsu; 08-11-2023 at 05:14 PM. Reason: Experiment |

I don't think there is a way to prevent teams relocating, you just have to edit
them back to their previous name/location/arena. One downside to the 'Add Team' option is an example where you maybe create a new team/franchise, play it for a few years , then decide to remove it again. That teams franchise history is then 'lost' forever. There is currently no way to resurrect the same team at a future date, and have the franchise history continue. The same doesn't apply with 'Add Historical Team' though, if you added the Minnesota Wild in the 1950's played them for 5 years , then removed them. When the team is added automatically in 2000 again, it's franchise history will include those previous 5 years. |

Manager options have options to prevent teams from stopping play, changing names and new teams appearing. Not sure if that would apply to relocations. Curious that you can control everything else but that.

I did another test with only Update Team Names disabled. This mostly prevented the relocation of the North Stars to Dallas in 1993. The name and home city did not change, but the team colors and arena name did change. The team logo was also replaced with the NHL logo.
