Questions from Total Newbie

FHM9 is the first management game that I have played. I feel like I'm in over my head. The manual is pretty much useless on how the game works. I have looked for answers in the forum, but haven't found answers.

On the roster screen, what do the letters mean after the name?

What about the *?

On the individual player screen, what is the role rating, and what does the bar graph ability range? I figure the larger the bar the better, but what are the high and low?

I knew there was going to be a steep learning mountain to climb, but right now it feels like a sheer cliff. It would be nice if there was more explanation for a new player. It's like everyone assumes you are knowledgeable about all the intricacies of the game. I don't want to quit and delete the game, but if there's no way to really learn how it works, well then.....

From the Manual:

Code Meaning
(C) Team Captain
(A) Alternate Captain
(TB) On the trading block
(P) Qualifies as a Prospect according to league rules (if the league has special prospect-related lineup/roster requirements)
(F) Qualifies as a Foreign player according to league rules (if the league has restrictions on foreign players)
(OA) Qualifies as an Overage player according to league rules (if the league has restrictions on the numbner of players a team can use that are the league's maximum age)
(UT) Untouchable: other teams will not make trade offers for this player. This option can be set by right-clicking the player's name and selecting Trading Options, or via the dropdown menu on his player screen.
(NI) Not Interested: this player will never be included in a trade offer from an AI-run team. This option can be set by right-clicking the player's name and selecting Trading Options, or via the dropdown menu on his player screen.
(H#) Goaltender's Heat rating, indicating how hot or cold they currently are, runs from 0 (cold) to 5 (very hot)
(*) Rookie, indicating player is considered a rookie in this league.

As for the bar graph, yes the higher the number, the better. High is 20. Low is 1.

Check out our YouTube page, or tune into one of our live streams if you have questions as well...but there's nothing wrong with asking here as well.

Playing, asking, watching, reading - these are all ways to learn about the game. You can ask questions here or on the subreddit both are active with developer responses and long time player responses.

Here is a link to the official OOTP YT channel where there are two playthroughs - one historical and one going through the new College mode, so depending on what type of game you're going to be playing it's worth checking those out:

Historical - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSrh...Ww0pNf&pp=iAQB

College - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abni...5Uz5af&index=3

but what about a plain old NHL sim you ask? You're a blackhawks fan I hear you say?! Well, look no further than this great series from YTer Old School Sports:

OSS Blackhawks Dynasty (50+ eps!!) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gfwz...tjziaPEUU9reEy

Hopefully those will provide some infotainment whilst you're getting acquainted with the game - as Adam said, just post and ask questions!

enjoy

Another question: I've been hired as GM/HC of a ECHL team. There's only one goalie on the roster. The game won't let me sign a FA. It tells me I have the maximum number of contracts. How do I resolve this? Do I need to cut someone from the team. We aren't even into the preseason yet. But I really need a back up goalie.

When you are viewing your roster, you'll see a tab just above named 'contracts' that will show you your contract limit - I'd suggest just releasing the lowest ability player from that list - then replacing them with a goalie from FA somewhere.
