Verily.

Meanwhile, I am looking for available sports on Zap2It early in a weekday afternoon. Their TV listings say "MLB Baseball" at 3PM! Yay!

Uh-oh, it's SNY, the Mets channel. Sure enough, it's a replay of yesterday's sweep-ending loss to the lowly Royals.

Resigned, I close the browser window with one hand and turn off the telly with the other. I would wager that to be the response of many Mets fans for the rest of this season.

For, and without meaning to pile on, what do you think the remaining Mets players are feeling right now? I would say something close to resignation and "whatever" for 2023. This is going to be an ugly final couple of months.

I made the conscious decision to watch last night's Mets game now after all.

And I shouldn't have.

The only catchers to have 5 RBI in their first game against a former team of theirs, ever, are:

James McCann
Travis d'Arnaud

I'll just mark an L for an 0-6 road trip and watch the rain fall at NASCAR.

It's one thing for Murph to get some revenge. Or even Travis D'L.

But…McCann't? Seriously? Sad doesn't even describe that.

FOX tease for the weekend, delivered during the WWC:

"Ronald Acuna Jr and the Braves look to continue their dominance over Pete Alonso and the Mets."

Bite me, FOX.

I "like" (...) how Pete hit close to zilch against the Orioles and then sacked the Cubs staff for four bombs and ten RBI in three games.

Kinda makes me think that some organizations don't have the basics down against some notorious hitters. Everybody should know by now that you get Pete by breaking balls down and away. He hacks at them. If you don't have that in your arsenal, just F it and walk him. Or go home.

Not that I'm complaining. Thanks, Cubs! Pete's slash line really needed that!

Last night the Mets became the first team in the modern era to, in a 9-inning game, have 7+ hits, 9+ walks, and scored zero runs.

Every time Gary Cohen has to read that off his notes the day after, the Mets should be obligated to wire every fan a tenner for a pain duller of his choice.

How many LOB? Were the sacks drunk all night long, or did somebody do a Joe Torre impression?

The New York Tossers have served up 20 runs in not even 17 innings to the Barves.

Can the season please just end?

34-3 three games into this set.

I will now declare it - I am very happy that ESPN grabbed this Sunday game for their night bonanza, and I can watch something that doesn't get my blood boil instead.

What was said: "This team sucks! We need damn MEN, you dick!"
What Eppler heard: "We need Danny Mendick."

Oops.

(Is Eppler getting fired? Buck is safe for the season, I'm told.)

Why, just why, is Pete hitting outside of the #4 hole again? "You want your best hitter to bat more oft-" Ah shut up! You want your trebuchet to bat with somebody on base, and as many as possible. The Mets have a steady sad rotation of D.J. Stewart, Jonathan Araúz, Tim Locastro (he lives!) and Mark Vientos batting eighth/ninth. Base runners among those: unlikely.

Gary mentioned something interesting in their 7-4 loss yesterday, that if the Mets finish in the bottom six, they can keep their draft pick, while otherwise, because their payroll exceeds the GDP of North Korea, they would drop 10 spots in the draft.

So that's why Pete isn't batting fourth again?

Well, he made it all the way back from the Long Island Ducks to Triple-A but apparently that is it for him.

If we can drop one game farther back and let the Nats pass us, then we and the Yankees will both be in last place, chasing that elusive double-cellar that New York has never achieved.

Granted, we both have fairly decent records for last-place teams. But considering that we've spent more on these players than the GDP of [insert name of country, I'm skipping the research], a combined 115-127 is still pretty embarrassing.

******************
I just got off the phone with Zack Wheeler. I grant you it's not that Zack Wheeler, but rather some guy at my bank (who could be Zach or Zac or Zak, for all I know), but I still asked him to come back and help the Mets, on general principles.

We had some wicked thunderstorm here earlier (the lights went out and on again and for all the things broken in Germany, the power grid is extremely sturdy...), so I just shrugged and napped for a couple of hours and woke up almost precisely for game time.

*Fine*. I'll watch.

And boy, wasn't I disappointed - what a thrilling presentation of Mets-Cards on the Golf Channel!! Always great to see such renowned stations to broaden their portfolio by broadcasting some silly ballgame in between Schmoltzie and Humpty Dumpty discussing whether Jeff McNeil or Mark Mulder is the better golfer (spoiler: Mulder, according to Schmoltz).

I have so many questions.

Why, f.e., are the talents of The Great Kevin Burkhardt wasted on a barely existing pre-game show, which is dubbed "Baseball Night in America", but where they talked mostly college eggball?

Why not dump Humpty Dumpty for Burkhardt. Maybe Burkhardt wouldn't have unloaded such a load of sewage - f.e. the sorry excuse for a play-by-play guy was convinced that Drew Smith allowed two inherited runners to score. He very much ******* didn't. O'Neill homered off Quintana, who put another two on. Burleson's sac fly was the only run that scored on Smith's watch. As far as I can tell, nobody corrected Humpty Dumpty on the error of his ways, ever, but I was facepalming and groaning a lot by that point of the game and maybe didn't hear it.

I do know that Schmoltzie put a birdie on his scoreboard for Burleson, though.

I have yet to get into how I could have backed up a semi truck with a 53 ft trailer through Marvin Hudson's strike zone without touching what he deemed ball territory, and the Mets still managed to walk five and were rescued on generous calls from a few more. Strike one from Gott to Goldschmidt was atrocious, but far from the only one. Well, at least it helped so Gott got Goldie...

"Home Run" Stewart probably tore out a few limbs on his tumble into foul ground chasing a late pop, which is how we got to that pinch-hit, ninth-inning leadoff jack by Tim Locastro, that the broadcast barely returned to from college eggball information, and which Humpty Dumpty correctly called his first home run of the season, but it didn't occur to either one of the two rotten eggs in the booth that it was his first *hit* of the season until the half-inning after.

Wholly and utterly atrocious!!

Best part of the game was Pete casually popping #37 off Wainwright, pitching upwards out of the shell crater he's hurled himself into over the course of his rotten final season. Should have retired with Yadier Molina.

So should have Smoltz and Humpty Dumpty.

Oh, btw, the Mets won, 4-2. But they tried their best not to.

Josh Walker to the 60-day Infirm List.

Ah, Josh, we barely knew ye! (As I'm not watching, I didn't know ye at all.) But looking at that stat line, I'm betting that Westheim was wishing he didn't know Josh, either.

In words of one syllable, "Eek!" Or possibly "Ulp!"
