Introducing a fictional player: Julen Matias

Every now and again you come across a special player. Julen Matias is such a player. One of the higest quality players I have ever seen in the game so I thought I'd share him as perhaps some might find it interesting.

In my little fictional league there is a relief pitcher named Julen Matias. I am in control of a small market team and signed him after the 2023 season for five years for $850,000 ($165,000 per year). With a team payroll around $1,750,000 a somewhat dubious move to spend so much on a relief pitcher. But his performance over the past two years and his overall ratings convinced me this was a good move. Off course in spring training the next year he got injured and missed most of the 2024 season. The next season he had a good season but nowwhere near his previous performance. With an average cost in this league of about $120,000 per WAR this signing was not looking particularly good. But then late in the 2025 I got a scouting update. (set to rare in my league and as a personal rule I NEVER ask my scout for a report). According to the new report his stamina had improved from 3 to 4. So for the 2026 season I decided to use him as a starting pitcher, with famous results.

This guy is probably the best pitcher I have ever seen in the game. His overall ratings and especially his pitch repetoire and quality is unmatched. Average K/9 this league is around 7.0 and the previous record was 11.32. His only weakness is his stamina. With 5.78 IP/GS he looks like a modern MLB pitcher, but I guess quality over quantity. In one start he left after 3 2/3 because of injury in a game we won and he ended up winning 19 games in 23 starts (88 game schedule, 4 man rotation). During testing of this league I saw some 20 game winners but only once every couple hundred years.

I control him two more years. After that there is zero chance I will be able to resign him with my teams budget. I think I am in Win Now! mode the next two seasons.
