The 6-5 win means the Americans are now a game away from sweeping the Reds from the World Series. Despite the loss, Reds left-hander Win Kellum had a strong outing in which he threw 11.0 innings of 9-hit ball. The win gives Boston a 3-0 advantage in the best-of-7 series. With the game on the line, Jimmy Collins came to bat in the bottom of the 13th. And the Boston third baseman came through, cracking a run-scoring single off Tom Walker, the Cincinnati pitcher. "Win or lose, we pick each other up in this clubhouse," Collins told the Boston Times. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Huntington Avenue Grounds in Boston. The Giants took the 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Athletics in Game 4 of the World Series in a 11th inning walk-off today. The win capped off a fine outing for the right-handed McGinnity. McGinnity threw 11.0 innings of 10-hit ball in the win, which gave the Giants a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 series. A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. With the game tied in the bottom of the 11th, an error by the Athletics allowed the Giants to score the winning run. "That was your kind of game, if you like high drama," said Giants manager John McGraw. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Polo Grounds in New York. For today, at least, Rube Waddell delivered. At Polo Grounds, the 29-year old pitched a game for the ages to fend off the New York Giants and help the Athletics close their deficit in the World Series. Waddell threw a 9-inning, complete-game shutout in the 7-0 Philadelphia win, striking out 6 and allowing 6 hits. The Athletics now trail 3-2 in the best-of-7 series. Waddell, the Philadelphia left-hander, went 9 innings, allowing no runs on 6 hits. He collected 6 strikeouts. "We'll savor this win," Waddell told the Philadelphia Chronicle, "then get ready for the next game." The Philadelphia right-hander emptied his gas tank in a 9-inning, 171-pitch complete game victory today. He threw 9.0 innings of 6-hit ball, helping the Athletics get past the New York Giants, 5-4, and take the World Series to a decisive 7th game. The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Philadelphia right fielder Socks Seybold, facing Red Ames, had a run-scoring walk. It gave the Athletics the 5-4 win. "I told everyone I have a terrible disease and this might be my last season," Coakley said with a grin. "Hopefully that should get them extra motivated for Game 7." Cleveland starting pitcher Otto Hess threw 9.0 innings of 5-hit ball, to lead the charge. The Naps now lead the series 1-0. Hess, a native of Bern, Switzerland, was dealing all game. He kept Chicago hitters off-balance, while giving the Naps 9 quality innings. Hess threw 113 pitches, allowing 5 hits and striking out 3. "It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said Cleveland manager Nap Lajoie. "It's usually not just one thing." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at West Side Grounds in Chicago. It was the latter case in 1906, as the Cleveland Naps topped the Chicago Cubs 2-1 tonight at League Park to win the World Series. It was the 1st title in franchise history. "When you play for championships, you have to play better than the team in the other dugout. We did that in this series, and all year. Now we're the best team in baseball," said Cleveland starting pitcher Addie Joss, who was named series MVP. The Naps took the series 4-1. The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the American League and a 99-55 record. Cleveland manager Nap Lajoie grinned and nodded when asked to comment on Joss's words. "Addie said it best -- we played better than the other team," the skipper said. Hometown officials announced they were already planning a "grand celebration" for the winners in the days to come. The Cubs left little doubt who was the better team. Celebrating a banner year, "team" was the word of the day in the victorious clubhouse after the game. "Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said Chicago manager Frank Chance. "Our players felt that way all year, and they played that way. When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void." A jovial mood filled the air as Chicago celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" would be in order. "I hope they have a big celebration," Cleveland manager Nap Lajoie said. "They deserved to win this series and they deserve to celebrate it."
