1971 Enzo Hernandez (In 1978)

There's a surprisingly prominent venue for him in color considering he played four games over about two weeks in August with the '78 Dodgers.

He's in a foldout Dodger "photo album" giveaway which is still common enough that you could get it on eBay for $20...

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, September 20th, 1912
"Charley Stengel, new Superba phenom."
Stengel's major league debut had been on September 17th, just three days before the publication of this image in the Daily Eagle when he was 22 years old.

Leo Moon 1932

This classic one-game major leaguer (Cleveland, July 9, 1932; 11 hits, 7 earned, 5.2 innings) made his cameo in the middle of a 17-year 497-game minor league career. An acceptable head shot has never popped up, and yet here it is.

Thanks to the (much) later Minnesota Twins' announcer and state baseball historian Halsey Hall, who in the Minneapolis Journal of May 24, 1931 decided to reminisce about Moon, a 22-game loser with Minneapolis four years before. It's full of inferences about bad conduct and bad pitching and now he'd lost his chance at the big leagues. And yet there he is in the Encyclopedia, and finally with a relatively clean image:

These are from Larry Fritsch on eBay, I can not find a J Scott. I know some of his post cards are mislabled on ebay. But this one has stumped me.

St. Louis Cardinals 1970-1978 time period. Number on uniform and hat is #45 and its labeled as "J. Scott"

Definitely John Scott of Padres/Jays experience.

He was acquired by St. Louis after the 1977 season and was traded away in October of 1978, spending the entire year at Springfield. Spent '79-'81 in Japan.

I am thinking this must be spring training, 1978.

The uni number is 54.

Alex Trevino

Here's a nice one from Larry Fritsch again on eBay, This time its long time major leaguer Alex Trevino. He was a NRI in 1992 spring training camp for the Cardinals. He was on the AAA team most of the year and acted as an interpreter and personal catcher for Cuban defector Rene Arocha. Trevino was called up in the last month of the season, but he never got into a game.

Stan Williams 1958 UIN Red Sox

The Stan_Williams_rsx image in the Pitchers pack shows Williams as a coach with the ca. 1975-75 Red Sox. Larry Fritch Cards currently offers a couple of images showing Williams as a coach, as well as this one which appears to show him during his brief tenure with the 1972 Red Sox.

Looking closely, the hat he's wearing may be the red-and-blue hat used in 1975-76, but I can't tell for sure. Maybe someone better versed in B&W photos of 1970s Red Sox uniforms can give a definitive answer.

I REALLY wanted to believe this shows Williams in 1972...they did begin wearing road unis which were pullovers that year, with that piping around the color (pointed in front, not crew neck), and that font and color scheme for BOSTON.

But...the hat. No matter how hard I squint and hope, that looks like a navy bill and red crown, which didn't appear until 1975.

The chase continues....

I thought that's what you might say.
Thanks for confirming.

Herb Herring 1912

Massive photo upgrade for Herring, who pitched in 1 inning in 1 game for the 1912 Senators. RMY Auctions has this up now, and makes a note that it depicts a lefty where Herring was a righty. Probably a reverse image. Pretty impressive they actually got a photo of this guy!

I am certain I have seen this pose before. Looking at the full photo, I don't believe it is a rev neg. The billboard ad on the right side of the scoreboard, while not quite readable, makes more sense un-reversed.

After searching Senators players from 1912-15, the years in which the team wore the hats shown in the photo, I found the image I was remembering. While not the exact same photo, the background scoreboard, player standing in the outfield, and head-tilt, as shown un-reversed, match a photo identified as Lefty Schegg, who had just one more game and four more innings pitched than Herring.

Thanks for clearing that erroneous identification, Scott! I should probably let RMY Auctions know.

OK - so only tonight I discovered a 10-year old video on Youtube produced by the Red Sox, called the Dwight Evans Story.

At one point he talks about being in Louisville in 1972, being told by manager Darrell Johnson he had 8 games to find his swing. He said Stan Williams, the veteran with the club, helped him out.

Then the video provided this image of Williams.

I don't want to get too excited but - these match road unis the Sox wore in 1972; the hat looks like it's navy.

To me, this could be Williams with the Sox in '72. He was released in September so I don't think he was with them in the spring of 1973.

One question I have is where could this have been taken - it looks like a spring site because of the trees, but again I don't think he was ever with them in the spring as a player.

Anyone out there want to offer an opinion as to whether this actually shows him as a player with the Sox?

I may have answered my own question - according to Baseball Reference he wore both 25 and 50 during his brief stint with the Sox in 1972, not 26.

As a coach he wore 32 both years, so the plot thickens.

I checked the Sporting News spring roster for 1973 and he doesn't appear. It doesn't say explicitly if it includes NRIs or not. Anyone have their list for 1973?

The Globe didn't look to have a NRI list but when Peter Gammons contemplated the roster in early February, he wasn't one of the pitchers listed.
