Today is Opening Day. The Orphans begin their season with an 8-game road trip that starts with a 4-game series in St Louis against the Cardinals. The Orphans signed free agents 1B Hal O'Hagan to a minor league contract. Reports are circulating that the Detroit Tigers are negotiating with free agent RP Pop Williams. With two out in the bottom of the eighth, rain began to fall, stopped and then resumed. The Cardinals outhit the Orphans 10-4 to get the win while the two teams combined for 10 errors. Childs grounded into the 4-2 fielder's choice for the second out before Chance delivered a bases-clearing triple. In the bottom of the sixth, Magoon knocked in a run with a two-out double. After six: Chicago 6 Cincinnati 2. In the top of the ninth, the Orphans loaded the bases with nobody out. Chance scored from third when Green grounded into the 3-6 fielder's choice. With runners at the corners and one out, Doc Newton took the mound for the Reds and he prevented any more runs from scoring. The Orphans went on to record their first win of the season, helped in part by 3 errors committed by the Reds in the game. Final score: Chicago 7 Cincinnati 2. With a runner on first and two out, Jock Menefee took the mound for the Orphans and finally got the third out of the inning. In the top of the sixth, Raymer padded his stats with a 2-RBI single. Raymer would go on to score from second on a Doyle two-out single. In the bottom of the sixth, Crawford scored from third when Irwin grounded to second. After six: Cincinnati 11 Chicago 4. In the top of the seventh, the Orphans scored a run on a two-out McCormick double. Pinch hitter Germany Schaefer followed with a run-scoring single. In the bottom of the seventh, Charlie A Ferguson took the mound for the Orphans. In the top of the eighth, Green brought home a run with a single. Dexter brought home a run with a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the ninth, with a runner on first and one out, Irwin grounded into the game-ending 6-4-3. The Orphans tallied 11 hits and the two teams combined for 6 errors in the contest.
