Today is Opening Day.

The Pirates begin their season with an eight-game road trip that starts with a four-game series in Cincinnati against the Reds.

The media is hyping the upcoming debut of Philadelphia Phillies SP Doc White.

In the bottom of the first, Harley scored from third on a Crawford two-out infield single.

In the top of the third, Ritchey tied the game with a sacrifice fly. A two-out double by Clarke scored two runs to give the Pirates the lead. Bransfield brought two more home with a triple to complete the five-run inning.

In the bottom of the third, Beckley picked up an RBI with an infield single. Beckley would go on to be thrown out at home trying to score from second on a Crawford single to right with Wagner making the throw. The Reds would load the bases with two out before Irwin flew to right to end the inning.

After three: Pittsburgh 5 Cincinnati 2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Beckley drew the Reds closer with a two-out RBI single.

In the bottom of the sixth, Peitz made it a one-run game with a two-out RBI single.

After six: Pittsburgh 5 Cincinnati 4.

In the bottom of the ninth, still down by a run, the Reds were retired in order to end the game.

The two teams combined for 22 hits and the Pirates also committed three errors but still got the win.

Final score: Pittsburgh 5 Cincinnati 4.

Today is the second game in the season-opening series in Cincinnati between the Pirates and the Reds. The Pirates won on Opening Day thanks to a five-run third inning.

In the bottom of the first, the Reds loaded the bases with two out. But Irwin grounded back to the pitcher to end the inning.

In the top of the fifth, Bransfield got a two-out single for the Pirates first baserunner of the game.

In the bottom of the sixth, Crawford broke the scoreless tie with an RBI single. The Reds went on to load the bases with one out. Irwin grounded into the 4-2 fielder's choice for the second out. Dobbs then singled to right to bring home one run but, on the play, Wagner threw Magoon out at home as he tried to score from second to end the inning.

After six: Cincinnati 2 Pittsburgh 0.

In the bottom of the seventh, Beckley collected an RBI single. Peitz picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly. The Reds went on to load the bases with two out for Irwin again but this time he flew to right to end the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, Steinfeldt was called out trying to steal home.

In the top of the ninth, trailing by four, the Pirates loaded the bases with two out. But Bransfield grounded to the pitcher to end the game.

Case recorded the complete game shutout. The Reds got 11 hits in the win while the Pirates committed 4 errors.

Final score: Cincinnati 4 Pittsburgh 0.

The Pirates signed free agent RF Joe Stanley to a 1-year contract worth a total of $690.

In the bottom of the fifth, Harley knocked in two with a single to break the scoreless tie.

In the top of the sixth, Clarke tied the game with a 426 foot two-run homer.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Reds loaded the bases with one out. Swormstedt went down on strikes for the second out. Harley then popped up to the catcher to end the inning.

After six: Pittsburgh 2 Cincinnati 2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Peitz gave the Reds the lead back with a run-scoring single. Crawford was then thrown out at home as he tried to score from third on a Dobbs grounder to third.

In the top of the ninth, Zimmer scored from second on a Beaumont two-out single. On the play, Dobbs injured his back making the throw to home and had to leave the game. He was replaced by Harry Bay.

In the bottom of the ninth, Jack Chesbro took the mound for the Pirates. Harley would be thrown out at home as he tried to score from second on a single to center by pinch hitter Algie McBride. With runners at first and second and two out, Bay grounded to first to send the game into extra innings.

After nine: Pittsburgh 3 Cincinnati 3.

In the bottom of the tenth, Snake Wiltse took the mound for the Pirates. Steinfeldt scored the winning run from first on a two-out Swormstedt single combined with a throwing error by Wagner, who had moved to right field.

Th two teams combined for 21 hits in the contest.

Final score: Cincinnati 4 Pittsburgh 3 10 innings.

After splitting the season-opening four-game series in Cincinnati against the Reds, the Pirates will face the St Louis Cardinals in their next seven games, beginning with a three-game series in St Louis. The Cardinals won three out of four in their season-opening series against the Chicago Orphans.

Brooklyn Superbas SP Brickyard Kennedy will miss five months after having surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow.

In the top of the third, Burkett injured his foot making a catch for the third out but he remained in the game.

In the top of the eighth, a Clarke single combined with a Burkett error brought two runs home. The Pirates scored one more run on an O'Connor two-out single. With a runner on first and two out, Bill Magee took the mound for the Cardinals.

In the bottom of the eighth, Heidrick hit a 391 foot solo home run.

The Pirates out hit the Cardinals 10-4 in the contest with the two teams combining for 6 errors.
