Game 122: Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Americans
What a brutal showing by the home team, as the Detroit Tigers (59-63) steamrolled the Boston Americans (68-54) by a 8 to 0 score. The Americans remain 4 games out of the top spot, with a Magic #15 and a 7.6% chance to make the playoffs.
Norwood Gibson (15-14) was dialed in, scattering 4 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit batsman as he cruised in his 145-pitch shutout victory; Game Score 82. Conversely, Noodles Hahn was rocked for 8 earned runs on 14 hits and 3 walks in 8 2/3 innings of play; Game Score 23. Bert Husting covered the final 1/3 innings of play. The Tigers offense was powered by Mike Donlin (3 for 5, Double, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs), Freddy Parent (2 for 5, Triple), and Tom Daly (3 for 4, 3 Runs). Boston's offense was pathetic and not worthy of spotlighting. Player of the Game: Norwood Gibson

Game 123: Boston Americans vs. Cleveland Naps
With very little room to spare, every game has become a "must-win" situation for the Americans if they want to have any chance to make the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Cleveland Naps (62-61) were the better team today, as they beat the Boston Americans (68-55) by a 4 to 3 score. The loss drops Boston 5 games out of the top spot, with just a 3.9% chance to make the playoffs and a Magic # of 13.
Kid Nichols (17-13) picked up the win after limiting the opposition to 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits, 5 walks, and 1 wild pitch; Game Score 66. Jesse Tannehill (18-12) was tagged with the loss after allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 11 hits and 4 walks; Game Score 47. At the plate, Ed Delahanty (3 for 5, Double, Run), Jimmy Sheckard (2 for 4, Double, Run, Walk), and Zeke Wrigley (2 for 5, Double, 2 RBIs) paced the Naps. For Boston, Fred Clarke (1 for 4, Homerun, Run, RBI), Homer Smoot (1 for 1, RBI, Stolen Base), and Jesse Tannehill (1 for 2, 2 Walks) played well. Player of the Game: Kid Nichols

Spotlight Game Performance: Deacon Phillippe
A fine pitching performance from St. Louis Cardinals ace Deacon Phillippe, as he led his team to an 8 to 0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. While his outing was nice, what is noteworthy is the fact that the win moved Phillippe to 9-0 since his trade to the Cardinals. Additionally, Lee Tannehill (who accompanied Phillipe in the trade) has put together a fine season so far with a slash line of .368/.415/.544 in 67 plate appearances for the Red Birds. It sure appears that the Cardinals got the better part of this trade over the Pirates.

Game 124: Boston Americans vs. Cleveland Naps
What a frustrating game, as the victory was there for the taking but the AI manager elected to send Cy Young back out for the 9th inning only to see five (5) consecutive singles result in the loss. In the end, the Cleveland Naps (63-61) topped the Boston Americans (68-56) by a score of 4 to 3. With the loss, the chance to make the playoffs sits at 3.9% and the Magic # was reduced to 12 games.
Watty Lee (16-15) picked up the victory by limiting the opposition to 3 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits, 2 wild pitches, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 65. Cy Young (12-15) was tagged with the loss after allowing 4 earned runs on 13 hits; Game Score 43. Harry Wolverton (3 for 4, Double, Run, RBI), Jimmy Sheckard (1 for 4, Double, Run, Stolen Base), and Lew Drill (2 for 4, Run, RBI, Stolen Base) hit the ball in the win, while Frank Chance (2 for 3, Run, RBI, Stolen Base) and Danny Shay (2 for 4, RBI) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Watty Lee

Game 125: Boston Americans vs. Cleveland Naps
Another loss, with the Cleveland Naps (64-61) completing the sweep by topping the Boston Americans (68-57) by a 2 to 1 score. The loss moved the Americans back to 6 games out of the top spot with the Magic # now at 10 games; a 1% chance to make the playoffs.
![]() Rookie Jake Weimer (17-13), the 6th overall selection in last year's draft, dominated the opposition and permitted 1 run (0 earned) on 6 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 78. Sam Leever (18-12) was saddled with the loss after allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits, 3 walks, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 63. While hitting was somewhat sparse for both teams, there were a few noteworthy performances. Specifically, Doc Gessler (1 for 3, Double, Run, Walk) and Ed Delahanty (1 for 4, Triple, Run, RBI) played well for the Naps, while Chick Stahl (2 for 2, Walk, Stolen Base) and Dave Brain (2 for 4) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Jake Weimer

National League Player of the Week
In picking up his first National League Player of the Week award of his career, Boston Beaneaters outfielder Jimmy Sebring crushed the ball to all fields. Specifically, Sebring had a .524 batting average (11 for 21) with 3 Triples, 5 Runs, 2 RBIs, 2 Walks, and 2 Stolen Bases for a slash line of .524/.565/.810 that resulted in 0.5 WAR and 0.14 WPA.

Game 126: New York Highlanders vs. Boston Americans
What an exciting game between the Boston Americans (69-57) and the visiting New York Highlanders (74-52). In a match-up that had playoff game implications, it took 13-innings for the Americans to top the Highlanders by a 7 to 6 score thanks to a Rabbit Robinson walk-off single. The playoff race now sits with Boston being 5 games out of the top spot with a 2.2% chance to make the playoffs; Magic #10.
Taking the mound for the Americans was Noodles Hahn who lasted 8 innings in which he permitted 6 earned runs on 12 hits and 2 walks; Game Score 35. Jose Ramos then pitched 2 innings of scoreless ball, before Gus Thompson tossed an additional 2 innings of scoreless ball. Oscar Jones (4-1) picked up the win for his 1 inning of work. On the other side of the ledger, ace Addie Joss (17-15) went the distance in the 205-pitch loss in which he allowed 7 runs (6 earned) on 13 hits, 6 walks, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 48. There was no shortage of offense today, as both teams hit the ball well. Leading the way for the Americans was Fred Clarke (3 for 5, 2 Doubles, Triple, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs, 2 Walks), Chick Stahl (2 for 5, Triple, 3 RBIs), and Homer Smoot (2 for 5, Double, 2 Runs, Walk). For the Highlanders, Lave Cross (3 for 6, 2 Doubles, Run, RBI), Harry Davis (2 for 4, Double, Run, RBI), and Jimmy Bannon (3 for 6, Triple, Run, 2 RBIs) played great. Player of the Game: Fred Clarke (Season: #2 / Career: #4)

Game 127: New York Highlanders vs. Boston Americans
The New York Highlanders (75-52) came through when they needed to, as they topped the Boston Americans (69-58) by a 4 to 3 score. While there remains a mathematical chance for the Americans to make the playoffs (0.4%), it is not looking very promising for the team from Beantown; Magic # 8.
A solid outing by Barney Wolfe (15-16) was just enough to pick up the victory after allowing 3 earned runs on 8 hits and 3 walks; Game Score 57. Jesse Tannehill (18-13) pitched well but an untimely error ruined his outing, as he allowed 4 runs (1 earned) on 13 hits and 4 walks; Game Score 49. New York had not trouble putting the ball in play, as Harry Davis (2 for 5, Double, RBI), Lave Cross (3 for 5, Run), Jimmy Bannon (1 for 2, Run, 2 Walks, Stolen Base), and Roy Thomas (2 for 5, 2 RBIs) each had a big day. For the Americans, Homer Smoot (1 for 5, Homerun, 1 Run, 2 RBIs), Jesse Tannehill (3 for 3, Walk), and Fred Clarke (2 for 4) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Barney Wolfe

Game 128: New York Highlanders vs. Boston Americans
UGH! An extra-innings loss when the team desperately needed a win. It is rather difficult to prevail when you lineup only gets 4 hits, your defense commits 5 errors, and your elderly starting pitcher is used for 12 innings and tosses nearly 200 pitches. In the end, the New York Highlanders (76-52) topped the Boston Americans (69-59) by a 5 to 2 score. With the loss, the Americans now sit 7 games out of the top spot (tied with the Philadelphia Athletics) and have just a 0.1% chance of making the playoffs; Magic #6.
Wiley Piatt (22-8) picked up the win by limiting the opposition to 2 runs (0 earned) on just 4 hits and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 97. Cy Young (12-16) tossed 195 pitches in the loss, allowing 5 runs (2 earned) on 11 hits and 5 walks; Game Score 64. The Highlanders offense was powered by Harry Davis (2 for 6, Triple, Run, 2 RBIs), Barry McCormick (1 for 1, Run, 2 Walks, Stolen Base), and Wiley Piatt (2 for 5, Run, RBI). The Americans limited offense came from Dave Brain (2 for 5, 2 RBIs) and Danny Shay (1 for 4, Double). Player of the Game: Wiley Piatt

Game 129: Boston Americans vs. Washington Senators
Well, if there was any hope that a playoff position was still possible, today's game squashed such. Crushed by a 9-run first, the Boston Americans (69-60) stuck their tail between their legs and whimpered to a 16 to 4 drubbing by the Washington Senators (59-70). The Americans are now 8 games out of the top spot and no longer show any % chance ito make the playoffs; Magic #5. This was Boston's 7th loss in the last 8 games.
Ace (and 2-time Platinum Award winner) Rube Waddell (19-16) picked up the win after permitting 4 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits, 1 walk, 2 wild pitches, and 1 hit batsman, while striking out 9; Game Score 69. Sam Leever (18-13) was torched in the loss, getting yanked from the 1st inning after getting 2 outs in which he allowed 9 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits, 1 walk, and 1 wild pitch; Game Score 5. Wiley Dunham pitched 5 1/3 innings of relief, allowing 6 earned runs on 10 hits and 3 walks before he turned the ball over to Bert Husting who allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits in 2 innings of play. The Senators lineup crushed the ball, with Cy Seymour (3 for 5, Homerun, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs), Doc Casey (4 for 6, 2 Triples, 4 Runs, 4 RBIs), Duff Cooley (4 for 6, 2 Doubles, 2 Runs, 4 RBIs), and Danny Green (3 for 5, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs, Walk) had an outstanding day. Of Note, Doc Casey tied an American League record with 2 triples in regular season game, as well as set the Senators record with 4 Runs in a regular season game. The Americans were led by Danny Shay (2 for 4, Double, Triple, 2 RBIs) and Bill Lange (1 for 1, Run). Player of the Game: Doc Casey

Game 130: Boston Americans vs. Washington Senators
A 4th straight loss and 8 of the last 9 in no way helps a playoff run, In the latest let down, the Boston Americans (69-61) fell to the Washington Senators (60-70) by a 3 to 2 score. The Americans sit 9 games out of the top spot with a Magic # of 4.
The winning pitcher today was Doc Scanlan (18-15) who permitted just 2 earned runs on 6 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit batsman while striking out 8; Game Score 74. Noodles Hahn (15-14) took the loss after allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits, 1 walk, and 1 wild pitch; Game Score 62. Washington's offense sputtered at times but did enough to pull out the win. Leading the way was Cy Seymour (3 for 4, Run), Jack Doyle (2 for 3), and Heine Peitz (1 for 3, Run). The Americans generated offense from Fred Clarke (2 for 4), Noodles Hahn (1 for 3, Triple, RBI), and Danny Shay (1 for 3, Run, RBI). Player of the Game: Doc Scanlan

Americans Eliminated From Playoff Contention
Given the extended losing streak, it came as no surprise that the Boston Americans were officially eliminated from the playoff contention.

Game 131: Boston Americans vs. Washington Senators
Well, that makes 5 consecutive losses and 9 out of the last 10 games. Here, the Washington Senators (61-70) topped the Boston Americans (69-62) by a score of 5 to 3.
Jack Chesbro (11-17) did enough to pick up the win, allowing 3 earned runs on 8 hits and 2 walks; Game Score 57. Jesse Tannehill (18-14) was tagged with the loss after permitting 5 runs (2 earned) on 11 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 48. The Senators were led at the plate by Jack Doyle (2 for 4, 2 Doubles, Run), Bobby Wallace (2 for 4, RBI), Cy Seymour (2 for 4, RBI), and Duff Cooley (2 for 5, Run, RBI). For Boston, Fred Clarke (3 for 4, RBI), Homer Smoot (2 for 4, Run), and Jesse Tannehill (1 for 2, 2 Runs, Walk) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Jack Chesbro

Game 132: Boston Americans vs. Philadelphia Athletics
Honestly, I have no explanation for the complete and utter collapse of the Boston Americans. In the latest defeat (making it 6 consecutive losses and 10 of the latest 11 games), the Americans (69-63) fell to the Philadelphia Athletics (73-59) by a 7 to 3 score.
Cy Falkenberg (14-13) was the winning pitcher today, as he permitted 3 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits, 3 walks, and 1 wild pitch; Game Score 64. Cy Young (12-17) lasted 6 1/3 innings before he was knocked out of the game; allowing 7 runs (5 earned) on 12 hits, 1 walk, and 1 wild pitch; Game Score 24. Willie Garoni and Bert Husting covered the final 1 2/3 innings in a scoreless effort. For the winning team, Honus Wagner (3 for 4, Triple, Run, RBI), John Titus (2 for 4, Double, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs), and Tom McCreery (2 for 4, 2 Runs) had a great day at the plate. On the other side of the box score, Chick Stahl (2 for 4, Homerun, 2 Runs, RBI, Walk) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Cy Falkenberg
