New to OOTP, Online Manual missing information.
Good day to all;
Just started this game this year (2024), having a great time simulating baseball season and watching imaginary HS player turn into a Hall of Fame superstar. I might be playing it differently from others, but what I enjoy more than anything is the promoting/relegating teams, building a small low budget team into the top flight league champions. So one niggling issue that I have has been the online manual. They are bit out dated or missing information. For example, I had a question about what some of the functions are in the league settings under financial sections. What does "qualifying offer value" mean? or "Allow Players to be purchased..." option do and what does that value mean? These two are some examples that I've run across that have no information in the manual. There are others, but these two were the most recent examples. Long story short, love the game, exactly what I've been looking for. But the Online Manual does leave lot of questions unanswered, so is that something that is being updated reqularly or only when new release is out? Thanks for the effort that's been put in this game. I'll keep playing and figuring things out as I go, but if you can update the manual regularly, as what I am guessing are new features that were added had not been updated in the manual yet, it would be really helpful. |

Qualifying offer is more of a MLB concept than an OOTP one. You can read about it at mlb.com, but the general idea is that instead of losing a free agent for nothing, you can make them a qualifying offer and then if you do still lose them you'll get a compensatory draft pick. I'm not a fan and don't play with it.
"Allow players to be purchased...", I think, means that a team in another league can pay you for your players instead of trading for them. I don't play with it either and wonder how it differs from the posting system like with Japan. My guess is the difference is with posting both the player and team get money and the player gets a new contract whereas with purchases the player is still under contract so just the team gets money.

Make sure you're viewing and searching the latest version of the manual here.
Sometimes old versions of the manual show up in web searches, and there is at least one web domain that tries to mirror the manual but looks suspicious. Unfortunately, when you submit searches through the official manual, you sometimes get warnings that the information you're submitting isn't secure. I think OOTP Developments might need to update its security certificates, which is why that message is probably appearing. However, since you're only submitting keywords, you can allow the searches to go through. You can find answers to most of your questions about the financials and free agency here: https://manuals.ootpdevelopments.com...age=financials https://manuals.ootpdevelopments.com...ge=free_agency However, some MLB rules and contract or financial concepts are complicated, and they might not be explained in full detail in the manual. If a definition isn't clear in the manual or you can't find the right explanation, try a web search and look for results that contain a detailed article or section on the topic. |

The best practice of documenting changes and additions as they are made isn't followed. By now a lot of what was done and how things work has been forgotten. It would be hugely expensive to try to go back now and fill in all that is missing and impossible to make the manual complete.
I previously complained a lot about this but have since then decided that considering the price of the game there is no reason to complain. OOTP is the best game of it's type while being the lowest priced. However if there was a significant price increase I'd expect a comprehensive and accurate manual.

Why do people use different players, different lineups, different strategy, development, talent change randomness, and the development lab, but judge the game on whether it produces historical statistics? |

I've been having fun playing around with the settings as much as seeing the results. so it's all part of enjoying the game for me so far. Cheers! |

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, that's where I've been going to get the latest "manuals" but it's not a big issue, just something I noticed as I play the game. Cheers. Last edited by emailittome; 02-07-2024 at 09:57 PM. |

And, as you have seen, these message boards act like a kind of interactive chat. I have never in four+ years had a question that someone could not help with in response. Plus over time I received a great deal of free advice on the more esoteric parts of the game - and there are so many variables and options. So I feel like the forums really take the place of the Manual. And proof of that is the presence of the developers as well. Of course, everybody has an opinion, and everybody plays their own way, so you need to make allowances for that. There's no wrong way.

I do realized that there are things in game that I would like to see changed but that's probably due to my inexperience, the UI and UX are not the most intuitive and do leave lot to be desired. But again small idiosyncrasies of the game is something that I'll get used to. So far so good as far as what I've been looking for. I've come up with some workarounds to get through some scenarios that I would like to see the game implemented but probably not something MLB would ever put in to practice. Satisfy the simulation and statistic junkie itch. Thanks for the info. Last edited by emailittome; 02-07-2024 at 10:10 PM. |

I would like the developer to explain the difference between OOTP QO and real QO. My team paid the luxury tax and yet the QO allowed us to receive a draft pick after the end of the second round, which would never happen in MLB.
