The 1917 World Series: Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Braves
Results Game 1, October 7th, 1917, Comiskey Park Road Win Lifts Boston to 1-0 Lead in WS The stakes were high. Lefty Tyler was ready. The left-hander turned in a performance for the ages at Comiskey Park today, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Boston Braves to victory in Game 1 of the World Series. Tyler held the Chicago White Sox to 7 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 0. The win got the best-of-7 series off to a good start for Boston, which now leads 1-0. Tyler, who was born in Derry, New Hampshire, threw 136 pitches over 9 innings, while allowing no runs. "I'll be honest," said Tyler. "I was running on fumes at the end." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Braves lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 8th, 1917, Comiskey Park Raucous Comiskey Park Crowd Propels White Sox to 6-1 Victory; Series Tied at 1 Behind a bravura effort from starter Hippo Vaughn, the Chicago White Sox topped the Boston Braves by the score of 6-1 today and got their first win in the 1917 World Series. Vaughn threw 9.0 innings of 6-hit ball for the White Sox. The win moves Chicago into a 1-1 tie with Boston. The White Sox took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Facing Boston hurler Rube Marquard with two outs, Vaughn hit a 2-run triple. "There's nothing like the postseason," said Vaughn, "to ramp up the pressure." The next game is set to be played for October 10th, 1917 at Braves Field in Boston. Series tied 1-1 Game 3, October 10th, 1917, Braves Field Braves Clip White Sox 3-2 in WS Contest Starter Tom Seaton was sensational for the Boston Braves in his team's 3-2 triumph over the Chicago White Sox in Game 3 of the World Series today. Seaton pitched well, but Boston picked up the win to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Larry Doyle drove in one run for Boston. In a tie game with one out in the bottom of the eighth, Doyle came through with a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It put the Braves in front, 3-2. "It was just a matter of executing," said Boston manager Harley Payne. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Braves Field in Boston. Braves lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 11th, 1917, Braves Field Almost There: Boston On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 2-1 Win The Boston Braves got a strong game from starter Lefty Tyler, but it was some clutch hitting that ultimately delivered the win. The Braves took the 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox in Game 4 of the World Series in a 9th inning walk-off today. The win capped off a fine outing for the left-handed Tyler. Tyler threw 9.0 innings of 6-hit ball in the win, which gave the Braves a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 series. Heinie Zimmerman was the walk-off hero for Boston. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Braves third baseman hit a dramatic run-scoring double to send the teams home. "If I go out there and help the team win, that's all you can do," said Tyler. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Braves Field in Boston. Braves lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 12th, 1917, Braves Field Chicago Wins to Narrow Series Deficit to 3-2 The Chicago White Sox have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading Boston Braves, winning 8-4 at Braves Field today. White Sox third baseman Heinie Groh was 3-5 with 3 singles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. The win cuts the deficit facing the White Sox to 3-2 in the best-of-7 World Series. Wally Gerber, the 26-year-old shortstop, had a direct impact on the outcome. Gerber contributed a run-scoring triple in the top of the second inning to put Chicago up, 2-0. "We're one game closer to our goal," Chicago manager Chris Wheatley said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that." The next game is set to be played for October 14th, 1917 at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Braves lead series 3-2 Game 6, October 14th, 1917, Comiskey Park Braves Win World Series With a 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox tonight at Comiskey Park, the Boston Braves wrapped up their 1st title in team history. Boston left little doubt who was the better club. "Team" was the word of the day as the Braves celebrated the culmination of their banner year in the victors clubhouse following the game. "Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said Boston manager Harley Payne. "Our players felt that way all year and they played that way. When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void." A jovial mood filled the air as Boston celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" in the works. "We're going to celebrate our team, our championship Boston Braves," the mayor said. The champions completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the NL and a 97-57 record.
