Jack Leiter's debut wasn't amazing, although the Texas defense didn't particularly care for his feelings, either.

Maeda on the other hand looked just woeful.

Craig Monroe enthusiastically imploring Baez (.175 BA, .460 OPS, 1 HR) to complete "a bloop and a blast" to keep the Tigers alive (Javy hit a medium-hard fly to RF to end the game) was one of the more dispiriting things I've witnessed, lately.

I can only imagine what it would be like for actual fans of the team.

This bullpen is a real treat. Starters, outside of the two FA pickups, are solid too.

Javy's Quest for the Mendoza Line, updated through 4/21:

.185/.214/.277, .491 OPS/42 OPS+. 1 HR, 7 RBI, 2 BB, 18 K.

Getting better?

He has had what for him is an outstanding week. He has even drawn 2 walks and I saw him with my own eyes take several sliders in the opposite batter's box.

Many years ago, I SWEAR that the Mendoza Line was a .215 batting average. Lately, I have seen it at .200. I gotta find one of my old Bill James' Abstracts..I think that's where I first saw it.

Edit. Yep. His lifetime batting average is .215. I am even more convinced that's what it was.

I think was actually just where ever Mario was. Don't be below him.

Javy had a 2 bagger today if I recall. Mario would be displeased.

Javy could have gone one for five, and raised his average.

Yeah, it was George Brett, riding on the Royals' bus, checking out the weekend listing of all batters and saying "I just wanna see who's below the Mendoza line". No number specified.

(What did Mario ever do to you, George?)

With Detroit being in the hunt this early in the year, I wonder if they're having any second thoughts about not taking Langford with the third pick. I assume they took Clark because they didn't think they were ready to compete this year.

At this point, I wonder if Javy never swung again, how many walks he would accumulate before teams realize he's being patient...

Good to see Flaherty right the ship after a rough start. Nice offensive night but a rare stumble from the bullpen.

Good road trip. 4-2

As a Cards fan, I hated to see Flaherty go. He really does have the talent to win a LOT of games. (no..he's not as good as Mickey Mantle!)
