BNN Weekly Report

News from the CBO, Minors, College, and Youth Leagues

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

26 July 2309

CBO Analysis

Now that the All-Star Break is completed, the CBO updates will have numbers of games played ending in zero. All teams have now played 80 games, meaning we have hit the 2/3 mark of the regular season and can start making predictions about the final 40 games in 2309.

The North Charles Association All-Stars have bragging rights for the year after beating the South Charles Association All-Stars by a score of 7-6 at CURIE Inc. Field.

Despite the loss, Oberland star Chase Doctorman played a key role in the win, going 1 for 1 with a three-run home run to lead his team in their comeback attempt. His lifetime stats show that Doctorman has hit .285 and connected for 206 home runs.

Four NCA players had two hits apiece for the winning team. Sunshine Tidings' C Red Sone had the sole home run for the NCA.

If the playoffs started today, it would look like this:

NCA
1. Starlight
2. County Crossing
3. Nordhagen Beach
4. Bunker Hill
5. The Slog

The only change this time was Nordhagen Beach and Bunker Hill flip-flopping spots yet again. The NCA's battle for the 5th spot is still tight with the Ghouls leading both Salem and Sunshine Tidings by just a game. Nahant is still in the running, though they will need to win at a much higher clip to claim the 5th spot.

SCA
1. Oberland
2. University Point
3. Jamaica Plain
4. Roxbury (wins tiebreaker over Egret due to 2-1 series advantage)
5. Egret

Not much has changed with the same five teams having the most realistic shot at the playoffs. With Roxbury's series win over the Ninjas, they are officially in the 4 spot. Quincy, Vault 81, and Spectacle Island are all still alive but have some catching up to do within the next few weeks.

Here are the current team power rankings for Commonwealth Baseball Organization:

Teams (Total Points, Tendency):
1) University Point Deathclaws (135.8, +)
2) Oberland T-51s (127.0, -)
3) Starlight Killers (124.2, o)
4) Jamaica Plain Red Rockets (120.3, +)
5) Nordhagen Beach Party Boys (113.8, +)
6) Roxbury Rad Sox (105.5, +)
7) Egret Ninjas (102.5, ++)
8) County Crossing Bloodbugs (102.3, --)
9) The Slog Ghouls (101.8, ++)
10) Bunker Hill 75ers (101.5, --)
11) Sunshine Tidings Chemists (98.5, +)
12) Salem Witch Hats (97.5, +)
13) Vault 81 Dwellers (97.0, --)
14) Quincy Gunners (93.2, --)
15) Nahant Celtics (82.5, -)
16) Spectacle Island Reapers (79.8, o)
17) Atom Cats (77.8, +)
18) Fort Hagen Silver Shroud (72.2, +)
19) Easy Town Assaultrons (70.8, -)
20) Concord Radstags (60.0, -)
21) Diamond City Swatters (57.0, o)
22) Lexington Synths (50.5, +)
23) Goodneighbor Hancocks (45.5, -)
24) FHE Yao Guai (40.2, o)

Brotherhood League

With County Crossing getting swept by The Slog and losing 5 of their last 6 BL games, the top of the BL is now the tightest in the CBO with the Bugs up by only two games over Nordhagen Beach. The Ghouls and Salem now trail by 6 and 7 games, respectively.

The Party Boys also got a post-All Star Break sweep of Nahant, knocking the Celtics down a peg but also moving the Boys back into BL champion contention, something they surprisingly have not done since 2305. Nordhagen Beach's pitching staff has been dominant, 1st in runs allowed (302), Starters ERA (3.68), and Bullpen ERA (3.05). Despite that dominance, SP Beachboy Nut (12-5, 2.56) has lost a few times in recent starts because of lack of run support for the 8th-best scoring offense (371 runs). Only one Boy is batting over .300--LF Young Goodman (.333/17/53), something that must improve over the stretch. Even C Biter Trout (.253/1/26) has struggled to hit, one year removed from leading the NCA with a .358 batting average. Should Nordhagen start hitting, the rest of the NCA had better watch out. PAM thinks they will do enough to take the BL in the end.

Institute League

Starlight still has a large lead of 7 games, so they will want to see how to move into late August with a similar lead. Bunker Hill and Sunshine Tidings are the only two other teams competing for a playoff spot after Fort Hagen has struggled, including going 2-6 the past two weeks.

The Killers are statistically the best-achieving team in the NCA, 2nd in runs (424) and runs allowed (309). Starlight has players throughout the roster who are stepping up to look as though Starlight can break through for a potential championship run. Interstingly, in PAM's post All-Star prediction, she has the Killers defeating Oberland in the Sole Survivor Series. For that playoff run to happen, SPs Digger Vadim (11-5, 3.65) and Whokill Poole (12-3, 3.10) will need to continue their dominance on the mound for the 2nd-best Starters ERA (3.78).

Minutemen League

Both University Point and Jamaica Plain are beginning to pull away in the ML with the Deathclaws now up 14 games on 3rd-place Quincy. While erasing that deficit is not impossible, it is likely that the Claws are one of two SCA teams that will see their playoff spot clinched in August.

The Red Rockets, not so unsurprisingly, are PAM's pick to win the ML. Jamaica Plain is currently 4th in runs scored (404) and 3rd in runs allowed (332). The entire lineup is dangerous but none moreso than LF Ken Debate (.331/31/74) who is in position to finish second in the MVP voting to the obvious leader Barker Cocoa of the Claws. SPs Derek Green (9-8, 3.45), Chris Deathclaw (11-4, 3.51), and Tim Fusion (10-4, 4.01) are all having decent seasons on the mound.

Railroad League

Oberland has the CBO's largest league lead at 10 games over both Roxbury and Egret. With the CBO's top record and talent, it is not likely they fade away and should cruise to their second-straight RL crown.

Vault 81 has reentered the conversation with a 6-2 stretch, including a series win over the T-51s, that has them back at .500 and just six back of the Rad Sox and Ninjas. Despite their offensive talent, the Dwellers are missing the contributions of star 2B Harry Byrd (.254/3/15) who is likely out for the rest of the season and LF Mace Pageturner (.294/1/27) out for the next couple weeks. SS End Yamada currently leads the team in average (.298), something that Vault 81 will need to improve significantly to make a serious run. We're not sure there is going to be much trading in the final week before the trading deadline, so the acquisition of 2B Chris Connexx (.235/13/34) will have to be the one that makes up for the loss of Byrd's typical productivity.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

July 19 - The votes have been tallied and the winner of the North Charles Association Player of the Week has been named. It was awarded earlier today to Fairprice Fairley for his great week at the plate.

The Nahant left fielder took home the trophy by banging out 10 hits in 17 at-bats for a .588 batting average, driving in 6 runs and scoring 8 times.

This season in 71 games, Fairley has hit at a .242 clip with 56 hits, 16 home runs, 27 RBIs and 47 runs scored.

The marquee name in the South Charles Association this week is Long Hall of the Egret Ninjas.

The hot-hitting 31-year-old first baseman put up a .600 average and .600 on-base percentage, piling up 9 hits in 15 at-bats, 3 home runs, 6 RBIs and 4 runs scored.

That kind of hitting got him the SCA Player of the Week honors.

Presently Hall is batting .275 with 9 home runs and 36 RBIs. He has played in 64 games and scored 37 times.

July 26 - This week's Player of the Week was Ross Merchantman of the Sunshine Tidings Chemists.

His big bat waylaid North Charles Association pitching for 5 hits in 13 at-bats, 5 home runs and 10 RBIs while hitting .385 and scoring 5 runs.

Presently Merchantman is batting .265 and has collected 27 home runs, 63 RBIs, .333 OBP and scored 56 runs.

The University Point Deathclaws received word today that first baseman Barker Cocoa was selected South Charles Association Player of the Week for his stellar performance in last week's games.

Cocoa took full advantage of all 15 plate appearances last week as he hit .700 with 7 hits, 3 home runs, 6 RBIs and 7 runs scored.

Looking at his present stats, Cocoa has compiled a .431 batting average in 80 games with a .578 on-base percentage, while hitting 40 home runs and driving in 106 runs.

Well, I still have not figured out how to balance the talent where top pitching is getting drafted at the top of the draft. For the most part, the top position players, including an influx of power-hitting 1B keep getting drafted high and the top pitchers are getting drafted late 1st, thus repeating the cycle of the worst teams having no pitching staff at the CBO or minor-league level. They end up having to trade good CBO positional players for maybe pitching prospects.
This is based on the fact that yesterday I was looking up the list of IRL Immaculate Innings (spurred on by the fact that I got it in this year's version and only 3% of people have that achievement ), but specifically the fact that the rate of them seems to be increasing, which makes sense with pitching becoming so out of control IRL. It made me wonder, I know rules wise you have this set up to be a bit of an older era (no DH, etc), but what year are you using for the stats? If 2020-2024 etc, it might make pitchers super powerful, but if you set it to model like the 90s 70s, 50s, 30s, etc you might get different results, etc. I know that's possible, but I've never messed with it so I'm not sure exactly how.

See, already one of the races is back to interesting! I learned last season (two seasons ago?) that no lead is safe until late August. Hoping the Red Rockets can cut their deficit, by UP is scalding hot

I didn't use a certain era's stats. I believe I went with default when I started the league, so the Historical Year in the settings is literally 2309. I'm actually afraid to know what typical scores might be if I had the DH. (Spoiler: there are no intentions of adding the DH to the CBO--in Fallout land, that seems to be so foreign! Only Commies want a DH! )

Based on ebbs and flows, I would hope more than one race would get interesting. If not, hopefully the race for seeds 3-5 are interesting until the end. Jamaica Plain could very well get back into it because the Claws have been dealing with injuries.

BNN Report

News from the CBO, Minors, BCAC, and CYL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

1 August 2309

CBO Trades

There was not a whole lot of significant movement before the trade deadline, but some teams have tried to improve themselves before the trade deadline. There were also some interesting trades. When we say interesting, we do not understand.

Let's take a look at two of the biggest trades.

21 July - Quincy acquired LF Delmarva Illeracula from FHE for SS Hose Wallcrawler. Illeracula (.296/5/29) was caught in a tough situation with the Yao Guai and now moves to a team trying for a playoff spot though not likely to get in this season. FHE gets back one of the settlement's favorite players in Wallcrawler, probably to finish out his career.

31 July - Spectacle Island acquired 1B Scott Back and C Biddy Swenson from Roxbury for C Ayag Mour and 1B Bug Eyes Sann. Swenson had been struggling on the season, batting just .219 with 8 home runs and 28 RBI. Roxbury thus sent Swenson to FHE and their top 1B prospect in Back to get the rights to Mour (.281/10/41), one of the CBO's top catchers.

CBO Top Performances

Fort Hagen's Birdie Burdi had the top hitting performance in July when his Silver Shroud faced the Salem Witch Hats on July 28. Burdi was 4 for 4 with two doubles, a home run, a walk, three runs, and six RBI in the Shroud's upset 10-5 victory over Salem.

Chase Wede of the Witch Hats matched Paul Stains of FHE for the longest outing in the 2309 CBO season when he pitched 11.0 shutout innings in Concord's walk-off win over the Hats in the bottom of the 12th to win 2-0 on July 7. Throwing 117 pitches, Wede held the Radstags to five hits, walked one, and struck out six batters. He also singled twice at the plate.

CBO Players of the Month

NCA Hitter - Michael Hoopring had quite a month with the bat in July and the Salem second baseman was crowned North Charles Association Batter of the Month for his outstanding efforts.

To win the honor, he batted .449 with 40 hits, 6 home runs, 12 RBIs and 22 runs scored. He also drew 12 walks to post a .515 on-base percentage.

Batting .348 to date, Hoopring has 22 home runs and 49 RBIs.

SCA Hitter - On the heels of a very productive July, Barker Cocoa received South Charles Association Batter of the Month recognition today.

The battle-tested first baseman hit .406 for the University Point Deathclaws and racked up 11 home runs, 28 RBIs and 32 runs scored.

Cocoa is batting .435 with 41 home runs and 111 RBIs this season.

NCA Pitcher - Ugio Church really tore up the North Charles Association this past month. He went 4-0 in July and won the Pitcher of the Month award.

In 5 starts he struck out 24 in 40 innings with a 1.57 ERA.

In 21 starts this year Church has fashioned a 9-4 record and a 3.47 ERA.

SCA Pitcher - The South Charles Association made it official today -- Emperry Alizm of the Oberland T-51s is the Pitcher of the Month. In July he impressed the sportswriters with his domination of league hitters.

Alizm made 5 starts, registered 4 wins and no losses with a solid 2.54 ERA. In 39 innings he allowed 31 hits, racked up 36 strikeouts, walked 10 and permitted teams to hit .215 against him.

On the year Alizm has worked 147.1 innings with 128 strikeouts en route to a 11-4 record and 3.79 ERA.

NCA Rookie - Youngster Kilometers Davis emerged as the latest North Charles Association Rookie of the Month today. The young man from The Slog deserved the honor, batting .250 with 4 home runs and 11 RBI. Is the month of July a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Davis enjoy the limelight.

A look at his season totals shows Davis with 24 home runs, .305 BA, .367 OBP, 66 RBIs and 56 runs scored.

SCA Rookie - Flint Firefist is beginning to make a name for himself and he did it by posting a 3-0 record and a 1.80 ERA in July. For his spectacular mound performance last month he has been named BNN's Rookie of the Month in the South Charles Association.

The 18-year-old newcomer isn't at all intimidated by his lack of experience, at least not outwardly. In fact, by the way he has pitched beyond his years, you could easily mistake him for a veteran.

In 0 starts for the Cats Firefist has struck out 5 batters in 10 innings, holding opposing hitters to a batting average of .171 during his hot streak.

To date, his season stats show Firefist has 3 saves with a 5-4 mark and 4.91 ERA.

MML Analysis

The MML still has more than a month to play. Therefore, the close divisional races can be interesting heading into the final month in September. Current divisional leaders are the Abernathy Adamantium, Everett Mutant Hounds, Providence Warlocks, and Brookline Bandoliers.

LF Bryan Cushman of Watertown had the best performance in the month on July 11, which also counts as the top hitting performance on the MML season. Cushman went 5 for 5 with a double, three home runs, a walk, five runs, and seven RBI in the Armorers' 23-12 victory over Burlington.

SP Redd Barron of Braintree had the top performance on July 18 when he pitched a complete-game four-hitter in a 5-0 victory over Warwick. Barron walked a batter and struck out 12 in the 125-pitch performance.

MML Players of the Month

LL Hitter - In the month of July David Stahl thumped the ball with authority, earning Legends League Batter of the Month honors in the process.

Everett's right fielder hit .380 with 11 home runs, 26 RBIs and scored 23 runs.

Stahl is hitting .319 this year with 30 home runs, 81 RBIs and 69 runs scored. He has 97 hits in 304 at-bats, 36 walks and a .405 on-base percentage. Stahl has played in 81 games.

SL Hitter - Arthur Dimmesdale relied on a .410 average to become the Stars League Batter of the Month. He had a good July, going 32 for 78.

He finished with 11 home runs and 30 RBIs, scored 20 runs, and had a .477 on-base percentage.

To date this season Dimmesdale is hitting .285 with 26 home runs.

LL Pitcher - In July Lynn starter Timmy Gilded mystified Legends League hitters and carried off the Pitcher of the Month honors by chalking up a 5-0 record in 5 starts.

The 30-year-old Gilded added 34 strikeouts in 42.1 innings and 12 walks to his season record and compiled a 3.19 ERA. Opposing batters hit .229 against him.

So far this season Gilded has compiled a 8-6 record with a 4.28 ERA.

SL Pitcher - The Stars League announced today that Pete Stahl has been chosen the league's Pitcher of the Month. The Providence starter had everything working for him last month as he glided to a 4-0 record.

In July Stahl chalked up a 2.36 ERA in 42 innings with 35 strikeouts and 15 walks.

This season Stahl has 7 wins and 3 losses and a 4.89 ERA.

BMU Analysis

We are now in the final month of the season with the lowest Magic # currently at 16. One league, the Dark Hollow Pond, is tied, and there are leaders in the other three leagues. Brockton and Tenpines are tied, while the Mystic Pines Raybathers, Neponset Park Criticals, and Forest Grove Pugilists have leads in their leagues.

LF Elijah Brooke of Mass Pike had a day to remember on July 27 when his Radroaches edged the Forest Grove Pugilists, 14-13. Brooke went 4 for 4 in the game with three home runs, two walks, three runs, and nine RBI. The biggest hit of all, though, came in the bottom of the 9th when he hit the game-winning, walk-off RBI single to send the Roaches home victorious.

SP Baker Hubbard of Somerville Place may not have pitched a complete game, but he had the month's best on July 27 when his Sentry Bots shut out the Marlbrorough Firemen, 12-0. In 8.2 innings, Hubbard allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out 11.

BMU Players of the Month

CA Hitter - Littleton Ragers fans may just have witnessed a star player blossoming before their eyes in July.

Heddic Volunnar put up a remarkable month at the age of 19 and has been named the Commonwealth Association Batter of the Month.

For the month, Volunnar hit .455 with 8 home runs, 23 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

This season Volunnar is hitting .310 with 13 home runs.

MA Hitter - Fastballs, curveballs, changeups, sliders. There wasn't really anything Elijah Booke of the Mass Pike couldn't hit during the month of July.

He has been named the Massachusetts Association Batter of the Month on the strength of a .395 batting average, with 13 home runs, 34 RBIs, 26 runs scored and a .443 on-base percentage.

Booke is currently hitting at a .310 pace with 21 home runs, 58 RBIs and has scored 52 times.

CA Pitcher - Mystic Pines's Pink Floyd put together one of the most consistent stretches of his career in July to earn the Commonwealth Association Pitcher of the Month trophy.

Floyd was tough out of the pen, holding the opposition to a .225 batting average in 10.1 innings. For the month he had a 3-0 record, struck out 10 and collected 5 saves in 9 relief appearances.

This season Floyd has notched 15 saves. In 26 relief appearances, he has 29 strikeouts in 28.1 innings with a 1.27 ERA. His season won-lost mark is 4-1.

MA Pitcher - Stranger Backrubman was firing on all cylinders in the month of July with 5 wins as he steamrolled all Massachusetts Association opposition on his way to the Pitcher of the Month award.

During the month Backrubman was 5-0 with a 2.51 ERA. He made 5 starts, tossed 32.1 innings and had 31 strikeouts.

For the season, Backrubman has a record of 10 wins and 3 losses in 17 appearances. He has an ERA of 3.73 and has fanned 82 batters in 99 innings.

GBRL Analysis

Like the MML, the GBRL enters its final month with three of the four divisions just one game apart with 1st and 2nd place. The sole exception is the Northwest Division where the Nuka Express Chrono Cowboys hold a five-game lead. The other leaders are the Lynn Woods Bloatflies, Hyde Park Stingwings, and Greater Mass Vans.

RF Alvin Treeshadow led the Chrono Cowboys on July 9 in a 9-5 road win at Beantown. In the game, Treeshadow was 5 for 5 with two home runs, two runs, and six RBI.

The GBRL's top pitching performance came on July 29 when SP Red Eagle of Union Hope shutout Rockland. In the game, Eagle allowed six hits and struck out 14.

Nuka News Update

Reporting on the NWL, APL, NWLR, and BBL Leagues

by Evan Guy

3 August 2309

Victory, Orange Maintain Slight Leads

The Victory Cave Crickets and Orange Tourists each hold slight leads in the North Bradberton and South Bradberton divisions. The Cave Crickets have a two-game lead over the Grape Painted Ghouls, while the Tourists have a three-game lead over the Dark Bloodworms. The four remaining teams look to be eliminated soon.

Curt Toth was at the top of the hit parade in the Nuka World League throughout July. For the outstanding month, the talented Dark third baseman was chosen the Batter of the Month.

He compiled a .431 average with 44 hits, 7 home runs, 24 RBIs and 26 runs scored.

This year Toth is hitting .372 with 17 home runs.

Quay Swimmer has made fans throughout Nuka World League take notice over the past month with an exceptional 6-1 record. No pitcher in the Nuka World League threw better in July, garnering him the Pitcher of the Month award today.

In 7 starts Swimmer compiled a 2.78 ERA, putting up a 6-1 record, striking out 40 and tossing 58.1 innings.

This season Swimmer has worked 80.2 innings with 54 strikeouts en route to a 6-4 record and a 4.02 ERA.

Rich Texan is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Nuka World League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In July the Orange hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .408 average with 40 hits, 3 home runs and 13 RBIs.

Currently Texan has 6 home runs and a .348 batting average.

The APL also plays 90 games, with teams already having completed 80 or 81 of those games. In the North Division, the Kiddie Kingdom Cappies hold a 7.5-game lead and have a Magic # of 3. In the South Division, the Dry Rock Gulch Convicts hold a one-game lead over the Grandchester Flying Ants.

At only 25 years of age, Jake Roth could very well have many more months like this last one during his career.

That would be great news for fans of the Nuka Bottling Plant Pack, as July was one to remember for the center fielder and he has captured the Amusement Park League Batter of the Month award.

On the month he hit .280 with 10 home runs, 27 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

In the 2309 season Roth is hitting .293 with 24 home runs.

The best pitcher in the Amusement Park League this month was Kiddie Kingdom Cappies reliever Camden Wakewater. He won the league's Top Pitcher Award for July by saving 10 games in 11 save opportunities.

Over the period Wakewater also had 2 wins and no losses. The Cappies bullpen ace had 6 strikeouts and 4 walks in 14 innings, surrendered 14 base hits and registered a 1.93 ERA.

Wakewater has made 34 games so far this year with 16 saves. In 33 innings he has dished out 23 strikeouts and walked 11 with a 3-1 mark and a 4.36 ERA.

In the NWLRL, the season came to a crashing halt for the Nuka Jolly Elves when the Dunmore Ferris Wheels beat them 10-2 today at Naugatuck Stadium to sweep the NWL Rookie Series 3-0.

Fans in Dunmore have already begun the celebration, and officials are expecting huge numbers when the championship parade takes place in a few days.

"Unbelievable for us, for our fans," an elated Ferris Wheels skipper Greg Hammerberg said. "This team has worked as hard as any team ever. They deserve it. What these guys have done, they're going to enjoy for a long time."

This was the 3rd championship for the Ferris Wheels.

After the game, Nuka Jolly manager Taylor Arndt was asked by reporters what it's like to lose in the NWL Rookie Series.

"You want the results to be different," he said. "They simply outplayed us, they deserve it. They beat us. They're the champions."

Dunmore finished the season with a record of 42-28 and ranked first in the South Bradberton Division.

Today Nuka Jolly's Beewith Yu was named NWL Rookie League Batter of the Month for July. He slammed opposing pitching hard all month long, bashing out 19 hits in 66 at-bats.

With a .288 batting average, 10 home runs, 27 RBIs and 17 runs scored, he was a solid choice.

Yu is batting .291 lifetime with 196 hits, 35 doubles, 2 triples, 52 home runs, and 154 RBIs to date. He has also scored 130 runs.

Jerry Cheesehead had an outstanding July -- so good that the NWL Rookie League presented him with the Pitcher of the Month Award earlier today.

"There's no way to know where the Ferris Wheels would be without Cheesehead," one fan is quoted as saying.

In July Cheesehead dominated the competition, running up a 3-1 record, a 1.73 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 26 innings.

In his career. Cheesehead has posted a record of 19-8 and compiled a 3.94 ERA.

For the Bradberton Boys League, award winners were announced.

At the age of 16, Cowboy Flores of the Ol Sugartop Buckaroos could very well have his best years ahead of him.

It's a startling thought when you consider the year he had in 2309 was good enough to win the third baseman the Bradberton Boys League Most Valuable Player Award.

"See the ball, hit the ball," he said. "That's my basic approach."

Vim! View

Veracious, Vivacious, Vainglorious Vision of the Vim! Leagues

by Vikky Vail

3 August 2309

Echo Lake, Grand Hotel Seek Division Titles

Every team in the Vim! League has 14 games to play. The Harbormen and Atoms lead the Fog and Harbor divisions with those 14 to play. In the Fog Division, both Eden Meadows and Dalton are in contention, while National Park is already eliminated. In the Harbor Division, Far Harbor trails by just a game and Acadia is three games back. Though not officially eliminated, Cranberry Island is unable to close their 11-game gap.

Players often talk about having career years. July was a career month for Gladder Questseeker.

The 23-year-old Grand Hotel first baseman bested all others and has been named the Vim! League Batter of the Month.

He put together an eye-popping month that saw him hit .405, with 12 home runs, 27 RBIs, 22 runs scored and a .437 on-base percentage.

So far this year Questseeker is batting .401 with 32 home runs.

A standout performance in July earned Jason Woods the Pitcher of the Month Award in the Vim! League. When his name was penciled in to start by the Echo Lake skipper, it meant trouble for opposing teams. For the month the Harbormen star racked up 5 wins and 2 losses.

In 59 innings of work, Woods limited opposing batters to 48 base hits and a .224 batting average. He notched 56 strikeouts, issued 12 walks and had a 2.44 ERA.

To date this year in 19 starts, Woods has crafted a 9-8 mark with a 3.68 ERA.

Dex Labb earned July's Rookie of the Month honors in the Vim! League for last month's performance. The boyish Eden Meadows right fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Labb hit .391 with 3 home runs, 19 RBIs and 22 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

For the year Labb is batting .347 with 103 hits and 12 home runs. He has scored 58 times and driven in 41.

In the MDIL, the Small Bertha and Old Longfellow divisions are nearly finished. Southwest Harbor holds an 11-game lead and a Magic # of 4, while the Eagle's Cover Harpooners have an eight-game lead and a Magic # of 7.

Lucky Radstormchaser of the Nucleus Radchickens spoke softly and carried a big stick in July and was justifiably proclaimed the Mount Desert Island League Batter of the Month.

The Radchickens left fielder rapped out a .379 batting average with 39 hits in 103 at-bats, drove in 19, scored 23 runs and chalked up a .444 on-base percentage.

This year Radstormchaser is hitting .331 with 97 hits, 18 home runs, 54 RBIs and has scored 58 runs.

In the VRL, the Rock Point Barnacles made it look easy today as they collected the 1st Vim! Rookie Series championship in club history.

They swept the Longfellow Pips in straight games, winning the series 3-0. The Barnacles disposed of Longfellow 13-3 in the series finale at Gibbons Family Field.

"They were the better team this year, no doubt about it," said Pips manager Paul Stands.

During the regular season, Rock Point put up a 44-27 record and finished first in the Western Atlantic Division.

July's VIM! Rookie League Batter of the Month trophy was claimed by third baseman Bigpaw Berenstain of the Huntress Island Ug-Qualtoths.

Last month he compiled a .391 batting average with 7 home runs, 25 RBIs, 13 runs scored and a .473 on-base percentage.

Aidan Livingston took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the VIM! Rookie League Pitcher of the Month award for July.

The 21-year-old Barnacles starter is a relative newcomer to the league, but nonetheless racked up an impressive 4-0 won-lost record in 5 starts. This month he fanned 27 batters in 40.2 innings and compiled a 2.21 ERA.

During his career, Livingston has recorded 7 wins and 2 losses with a 2.77 ERA and limited other teams to a .221 average.

Finally, the Maine Youth Leagues have named their awards winners for 2309.

The future looks extremely bright for Jeff Ensuzy. At the age of 15, many players are still trying to find their way in Maine Youth Leagues.

Ensuzy has not only found his way, he's already established himself as one of the game's brightest stars, today being named the winner of the Mount Desert Island Four Most Valuable Player Award.

"I didn't expect to hit .269 this year, that's for sure," the center fielder said.

At the age of 17, Dejax Coney says he still has a lot to learn about life in Maine Youth Leagues.

But he certainly seems to be a quick study, as the Pleasant Cove Raiders reliever was better than all others this year and has captured the 2309 Great Diamond Island League Reliever of the Year Award.

"I hope to win this a few more times before all is said and done in my career," the
Falmouth, Maine native said.

For the season, Coney had 9 saves in 16 relief appearances, which totaled 16. He fanned 15 betters, while walking 8 and put up a record of 0-0 to go with his 0.56 ERA.

He received 4 first place votes out of a possible 8. Fizz Gunners of the Sunset Park Anglers finished second in voting with 2 first place votes, while Hey Jace Sorrey of the Echo Point Glowers finished third with 2 first place votes.

Yeah, I think "future" dates just use whatever the most recent real life date is, so you're probably getting the absolutely insane pitching stats from the past few years. The DH comment was just an example, haha, not a suggestion that it'd fix it. My preference on that is actually half and half, not for anything stats related, but just because I like the chaos of two halves using different rules

BNN Weekly Report

News from the CBO, Minors, College, and Youth Leagues

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

9 August 2309

CBO Analysis

We have now completed the third quarter with each team having played 90 games. Three of the leagues look all but clinched with 30 games to go and Magic #s in the low-20s. However, there are still plenty of playoff spots still up for grabs in each association. Let's look at the current seedings.

NCA
1. Starlight
2. Nordhagen Beach
3. County Crossing
4. Bunker Hill
5. Sunshine Tidings

Nordhagen Beach took over control of the Brotherhood League and now sits in the 2nd slot with County Crossing just two back. Sunshine Tidings also worked their way into the playoff picture after going 6-4, while The Slog could only manage a 4-6 mark, dropping them a game back of the Chemists.

SCA
1t. Oberland
1t. University Point
3. Jamaica Plain
4. Egret
5. Roxbury

Oberland and University Point have played four times this season with each team winning two games. That puts them into a first-place tie for now while the rest of the SCA is far behind. In the 3-5 spots, all three are jumbled and Quincy and Vault 81 are just three and five games back of the 5th spot.

Here are the current team power rankings for Commonwealth Baseball Organization:

Teams (Total Points, Tendency):
1) University Point Deathclaws (135.0, +) - The Deathclaws have been on a tear despite their injury woes--minus SP Tony Bertha (16-2, 4.19), CF Aesed Hayjen (.378/27/57), and RF Tomas Jones (.350/11/37)--going 8-2 in their last 10, tied for the best mark in that span. The Claws swept FHE, won two over Goodneighbor, split at Egret, and then swept Atom.
2) Oberland T-51s (131.0, -) - Oberland is now tied with University Point for the best CBO record after going 7-3 in thelr last 10. The T-51s swept the Cats on the road, won two over the Ninjas, swept the Hancocks, and lost two at the Yao Guai.
3) Starlight Killers (127.0, o) - The Killers still own the NCA's best record and now have a nine-game lead in the Institute League thanks to an 8-2 record in the past two weeks. Starlight swept County Crossing, won two at Lexington, swept Nahant, and then won two over the Synths.
4) Nordhagen Beach Party Boys (115.0, o) - The Party Boys are back on top of the Brotherhood League after going 8-2 in their last 10. The Boys swept Lexington on the road, beat The Slog twice, swept Concord, and then won two at the Bloodbugs.
5) Jamaica Plain Red Rockets (108.0, ++) - The Red Rockets surged back up the rankings despite a losing streak that made them 4-6 in the past two weeks. However, the Rockets have now won four straight. They got swept at home by Egret, got swept at Quincy, split at Vault 81, and then swept the Gunners at home.
6) Bunker Hill 75ers (107.0, ++)
7) County Crossing Bloodbugs (105.0, o)
8) Egret Ninjas (105.0, -)
9) Roxbury Rad Sox (103.0, -)
10) Quincy Gunners (97.0, --)
11) Vault 81 Dwellers (97.0, ++)
12) Sunshine Tidings Chemists (96.0, --)
13) Salem Witch Hats (95.0, o)
14) The Slog Ghouls (95.0, -)
15) Nahant Celtics (85.0, o)
16) Spectacle Island Reapers (81.0, o)
17) Fort Hagen Silver Shroud (71.0, +)
18) Concord Radstags (68.0, ++)
19) Atom Cats (62.0, -)
20) Easy Town Assaultrons (60.0, o)
21) Diamond City Swatters (57.0, -)
22) Goodneighbor Hancocks (53.0, o)
23) Lexington Synths (51.0, o)
24) FHE Yao Guai (51.0, o)

Brotherhood League

With the series victory over County Crossing, Nordhagen Beach has now taken control in the BL over the struggling Bloodbugs. The Slog and Salem also struggled to win games in the last stretch, giving the Boys an eight-game lead over the 3rd place teams, meaning their playoff-clinching Magic # is 23.

When we look at the Bloodbugs, we are becoming more convinced that they are more pretender than contender. And yet, they are just two games back of being the 2nd seed in the NCA. The Bugs are 6th in runs scored (438) and 4th in runs allowed (390). For their starters, only one player, SP Bobby Carvajal (11-3, 3.94), has an ERA below 4.00. Both CF Any Why (.321/24/63) and RF Babs Rooth (.316/24/70) have good, not great, seasons. None of the starters in the batting lineup are batting below .250, yet County Crossing is 5th in average (.273).

Institute League

Starlight keeps pulling away in this league, making us think they are indeed the best team in the NCA and perhaps the CBO. In the meantime, Bunker Hill and Sunshine Tidings stay relatively close to each other, with the 75ers maintaining a four-game advantage as they are trying for the 3rd seed.

The Chemists are still relying on their offense to keep them in games since the pitching is struggling, including being tied for 9th for runs allowed (447). The offense is 4th in runs scored (464) with big-time power numbers for the top home run team (155): 1B Dusty Brownell (.303/36/65), 3B Ross Merchantman (.269/32/75), and RF Baktu DaWell (.298/25/50).

Minutemen League

Like most of the other leagues, it is hard to imagine that University Point will fall from the mountaintop. The Deathclaws hold the second-largest league lead, with that number not being larger thanks to Jamaica Plain's sweep of Quincy. At the same time, the Gunners' losses have reduced the Deathclaws' Magic # for clinching a playoff spot to 16.

The Gunners are still a good team, but they cannot afford to have many more poor series in the final six weeks of the regular season. Quincy is 3rd in runs scored (464) and tied for 6th in runs allowed (425), meaning they have many tight games. Franchise player 3B Ben Pettinato (.294/24/85) continues to have a huge impact in his 14th season with the Gunners. RF Baywatch Fischler (.353/15/47) is out until maybe the end of the month, which does cut into offensive production. SP Village Idiot Recker (11-8, 3.70) is having his best season in his second year after moving from bullpen to starter.

Railroad League

Many of us thought Roxbury would give Oberland a run for their money, but it has turned out to be Egret who is battling the Rad Sox for 2nd place. It is evident that the Sox are no longer the dominant team they once were, so battling for a playoff spot is the big factor this season. Vault 81 is still in the running, too, but they need to win all or the vast majority of their remaining 12 series to earn a spot.

For the Ninjas, they remain as quiet a good team as the CBO has seen. They could quietly slip out of the playoff race or dominate their way to the Sole Survivor Series. On the season, Egret is 5th in runs scored (446) and 1st in runs allowed (354). We may have mentioned this before, but the Ninjas' starters look as though they could help them win it all in 2309 with a 3.64 team ERA. Both Tup Mallory (10-3, 3.07) and Admiral Kelm (14-6, 3.64) have been great on the mound and getting the run support necessary to win games.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

August 2 - Swinging a hot stick last week, Family Sam Partridge picked up the North Charles Association Player of the Week Award today.

The 20-year-old left fielder for Lexington lashed 13 hits in 20 at-bats as he put together a .650 average with 2 home runs. Partridge also drove in 5 runs, scored 6 times and compiled a .696 OBP.

Thus far this season Partridge has hit .283 with 13 home runs, 39 RBIs and scored 36 times.

His solid numbers speak for themselves. That's why Figgie Legendsport of the Atom Cats was named the South Charles Association Player of the Week.

For the week Legendsport batted .529 (9-for-17) with 3 home runs and 7 RBIs.

For the season Legendsport is batting .355 with 107 hits and 21 home runs. He has scored 57 times and batted in 59.

August 9 - This week's standout performer in the North Charles Association was first baseman Casey Roux of the County Crossing Bloodbugs.

He belted out a .524 average and was voted the Player of the Week. Over the last week Roux collected 11 hits in 21 at-bats and 4 home runs, drove in 6 runs and scored 7 times.

So far this year Roux has 19 home runs and a .271 batting average.

All week long nobody could get Stu Gains out in the South Charles Association and that is the prime reason he was voted the Player of the Week.

The Vault 81 center fielder took home the trophy by blasting 8 hits in 19 at-bats for a .421 batting average, driving in 10 runs and scoring 8 times.

Looking at his season stats, Gains has compiled a .310 batting average and a .408 on-base percentage, while hitting 28 home runs and driving in 85 runs.

CBO Draft Outlook

The OSA has released its first look at the 2309 Rookie Draft. Of course, they have yet to include the four expansion teams from Malden, Cambridge, South Boston, and Vault 95. Really, the first mocks are showing how OSA scouts think the CBO scouts will rank players.

That means, the #1 expected pick is 1B Juu Racetrack of the Littleton Beasts who is considered a draft-eligible 16-year-old. The Beasts joined the Commonwealth Youth League this season, so only Racetrack's 2309 stats count. In 76 games, Racetrack batted .350 with 20 home runs and 57 RBI. He is considered to be a high-contact prospect with the power to drive quite a few hits over the fence. While he can play either corner infield position, Racetrack is likely to be a 1B in the majors.

CF Erasmus Hansen of South Charles Bank is predicted to be the second player taken. Hansen is a speedy outfielder capable of playing anywhere in the outfield and play it well. He finished his career with the Moonies with a .309 batting average, 67 home runs, and 233 RBI. He also scored 195 runs and stole 25 bases in 31 attempts. Scouts think he will be a good all-around player and may quickly move up the minor league ranks as his potential becomes productivity.

It has not yet been determined where the expansion teams will draft. There have been proposals of the four teams picking at the bottom of Round 1 and then the top of every other round. There have also been talks of choosing at the top in every round or immediately before 2309 playoff teams.

Complete OSA initial mock minus expansion teams:

Nuka News Update

Reporting on the NWL, APL, NWLR, and BBL Leagues

by Evan Guy

19 August 2309

Victory, Orange to Play for Title

The 2309 season has completed with the Victory Cave Crickets set to take on the defending champions of the NWL, the Orange Tourists. Both teams finished the season at 53-37. Orange held the season series advantage, 5-4, thus will be the home team in Game 1.

There were not many records set this season. For season records, CL Josh Kelley of Dark set the single-season saves record of 27, beating his own record shared with Old Buck Buchanan (26).

The APL season is now complete. It was a hard-fought battle for both teams to make it this far. But as the saying goes, "to the victors go the spoils." For the victorious Dry Rock Gulch Convicts, that meant the Amusement Park League Amusement Park Series trophy.

The Convicts took a 6-2 victory over the Kiddie Kingdom Cappies at King Cola Park at Kiddie Kingdom, winning their 1st championship after taking the series 4-3.

"We've got grit," said Convicts catcher Bran Maverly, who was named MVP of the series. "We know how to win when we have to."

The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the APL South Division and a 42-43 record.

For the NWLRL, the following players were award winners:

He may have less experience than most of his NWL Rookie League peers, but that didn't slow Beewith Yu down at all in 2309.

At the age of 22, the Nuka Jolly right fielder has been named the winner of the NWL Rookie League Most Valuable Player Award.

He had a .315 batting average and a .402 on-base percentage this year. In 70 games he piled up 84 hits, 18 doubles, no triples, 28 home runs, 82 RBIs and 49 runs scored.

"I'm blown away by the season I was able to put together," he said. "I'm looking forward to trying to do it all again next year."

He received 6 first place votes out of a possible 8. Crazy Claws Revere of the Dunmore Ferris Wheels finished second in voting with 2 first place votes, while Chip N. Pfish of the Red Rocket Radrats finished third.

The talented Wixon Cola Kings star finished the year 6-3 with a 3.07 ERA. He struck out 81 in 85 innings while walking 31.

Raze Eyebrow of the Red Rocket Radrats said he never set out to win the NWL Rookie League Reliever of the Year Award this season, but he'll certainly take it.

"2309 was a pretty good year for me, that much is obvious," he said. "This is icing on the cake."

The 21-year-old out of Dracut, Massachusetts fashioned a 1.78 ERA this season over 30.1 innings of work. He made 27 relief appearances and had 2 saves, 28 strikeouts, 15 walks and a record of no wins and no losses.

BNN Weekly Report

News from the CBO, Minors, College, and Youth Leagues

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

23 August 2309

CBO Analysis

One hundred games have been played. Every team has a good idea of where they stand in the playoff race. While no teams have officially clinched a playoff spot, several teams could clinch a spot as early as this week. Only two teams, Goodneighbor and FHE, are officially eliminated from contention, but two other teams, Lexington and Diamond City, will be officially eliminated probably by tomorrow. Atom, Concord, and maybe Spectacle Island are all also close to being officially eliminated. Here are the current playoff seeds:

NCA
1. Starlight
2. Nordhagen Beach
3. Bunker Hill
4. County Crossing
5t. Salem
5t. Sunshine Tidings

Starlight and Nordhagen Beach remain at the top, along with Bunker Hill and County Crossing being in good positions to clinch 2nd place in their leagues. Salem and Sunshine Tidings have split their season series, 3-3, so they are tied for the 5th seed with The Slog just one game back of each of those teams. The Witch Hats and Chemists meet this week in Sunshine Tidings. A sweep by either team would clinch the tiebreaker.

SCA
1. Oberland
2. University Point
3. Egret
4. Quincy
5. Roxbury

Oberland retakes the lead in the SCA. Jamaica Plain, which was #3 in our last update now drops to 6th but only one game back of both Quincy and Roxbury for the playoffs.

Here are the current team power rankings for Commonwealth Baseball Organization:

Teams (Total Points, Tendency):
1) Oberland T-51s (129.0, +) - The T-51s return to the top spot after a 7-3 stretch that makes them the CBO's first 70-win team this season. Oberland swept University Point, won two over FHE, swept Spectacle Island, and then lost two of three at Egret.
2) University Point Deathclaws (125.4, +) - The Deathclaws only went 5-5 in their past 10 but are on a three-game winning streak to keep them far atop the Minutemen League. University Point was swept by the T-51s at home, won two at Atom, got swept at Atom, and then swept Goodneighbor.
3) Starlight Killers (124.4, -) - The Killers dropped a bit this week despite a 7-3 stretch that included a series loss this past weekend. Still, with a seven-game lead on the top seed in the NCA, Starlight looks to be set to clinch that spot. In the past two weeks, the Killers swept Nahant on the road, swept Lexington, split with The Slog, and won one over Fort Hagen.
4) Bunker Hill 75ers (118.0, +) - The 75ers went 8-2 for the top two-week span in the NCA to move them up to #4. Bunker Hill swept County Crossing, won two at the Silver Shroud, split at Nordhagen Beach, and then swept Concord.
5) Egret Ninjas (115.0, o) - The Ninjas went 8-2 in their last 10 to take control of 2nd place in the Railroad League heading into the final 20 games. Egret swept the Reapers, got a sweep at Roxbury including two shutouts to take control of 2nd place, split at the Hancocks, and won two over Oberland.
6) Quincy Gunners (113.6, +)
7) Nordhagen Beach Party Boys (112.8, --)
8) County Crossing Bloodbugs (109.4, ++)
9) Roxbury Rad Sox (106.6, +)
10) Jamaica Plain Red Rockets (97.8, -)
11) Vault 81 Dwellers (93.6, -)
12) Salem Witch Hats (90.6, o)
13) Sunshine Tidings Chemists (90.6, --)
14) The Slog Ghouls (88.8, o)
15) Nahant Celtics (83.6, o)
16) Fort Hagen Silver Shroud (73.8, +)
17) Easy Town Assaultrons (73.0, o)
18) Diamond City Swatters (65.6, ++)
19) Spectacle Island Reapers (63.4, --)
20) Atom Cats (63.2, o)
21) FHE Yao Guai (56.8, o)
22) Lexington Synths (56.6, +)
23) Concord Radstags (54.8, --)
24) Goodneighbor Hancocks (50.6, -)

Brotherhood League

Nordhagen Beach and County Crossing look poised to take the battle for the BL down to the final week with just a three-game difference between them. Salem and The Slog are battling for 3rd place with Nahant still hanging around at five games out of the 5th seed.

The Party Boys are not a sure-fire championship contender this season despite their current place in the NCA. At 7th in runs scored (484) and 2nf in runs allowed (393), they are most certainly a good team with good pitching that can get them far in the playoffs. Most of the reason they have the 3rd-best Starters ERA (3.85) is because SP Beachboy Nut (16-5, 2.48) is hard to score on. However, second started, Deedee Martinson (7-11, 4.66), has been giving up way too many runs in his starts to be a reliable second pitcher. SP Ugio Church (11-4, 3.48) has looked like a top starter and could give the Boys a chance to win a deep series.

Institute League

This league has been a race of three for playoff contention. With a 16-game lead over Sunshine Tidings, Starlight is close to clinching a playoff spot. Bunker Hill will win at least 70 games, meaning they are almost sure to be the 3 or 4 seed.

As the defending champions, the 75ers have not seemed to level up, but they will be verifiably dangerous in the playoffs. Bunker Hill is 1st in runs scored (547) and 5th in runs allowed (443) thanks to the 2nd-best Starters (3.79 ERA). Pitcher-for-pitcher, the 75ers may have the best three-starter staff in production: Jason Tonelli (11-9, 3.70), Max Thunderdome (15-6, 3.56), and Hangman Alley (8-2, 2.93). Top that with a power-based offense that is 1st in home runs (176) with all eight starters in their lineup hitting 10 or more home runs. The middle of the lineup--SS Aaron Squire (.287/24/61), 1B Matt Stickhouse (.331/30/88), and LF Donny Kowalski (.306/28/83)--makes this team capable of repeating in 2309.

Minutemen League

With the largest lead (11 games) in the CBO, University Point is likely to cruise into one of the top two spots. Despite their injury struggles, the Deathclaws have proven to have the CBO's deepest bench and will be dangerous throughout the playoffs when they are healthier.

Quincy and Jamaica Plain are now jostling for 2nd place for an automatic playoff berth and the 5th seed, in which Egret and Roxbury also come into play in the Railroad League.

The Red Rockets seem to have the slight advantage in that race thanks to a well-balanced team overall, tied for 5th in runs scored (487) and 4th in runs allowed (440). LF Ken Debate (.317/37/88) and SS Jake Doucette (.360/18/55) are both carrying the offense, so they need more players to step up in their bid to make their first Sole Survivor Series.

Railroad League

Oberland has a Magic # of 11, and they are likely to clinch the RL by the time we next update the standings unless they collapse this week. As mentioned above, the Rad Sox and Ninjas are in contention for 2nd place. Vault 81 is a dark horse candidate for the 5th seed at 5 games back.

No team in the SCA looks to be close to where the T-51s are. 2nd in runs scored (546) and runs allowed (408), Oberland is the most balanced team in the CBO, thus its top record. Led by RF Orcin Cardinal (.311/34/70), 1B Chase Doctorman (.307/24/70), SP Emperry Alizm (13-5, 3.33), SP Mesquite Williams (13-5, 3.37), and CL William Butcherman (31 SV, 2.02), Oberland appears to be poised to win it all in 2309 after falling just short last season.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

August 16 - Sleve McDichael of the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud had an outstanding week and today was voted the Player of the Week by the North Charles Association.

For the week the 26-year-old catcher batted .476 (10-for-21) with 2 home runs and 8 RBIs.

McDichael is hitting .328 so far this season with 59 RBIs and 55 runs scored. He has 116 hits including 16 home runs, 47 walks and .404 OBP.

Jamaica Plain Red Rockets shortstop Jake Doucette walked away with the South Charles Association Player of the Week Award today after putting up some impressive numbers over the past seven days.

"The Red Rockets fans are really behind me right now," said the 31-year-old. "That helps. They give you the confidence to go out there and do better."

Doucette batted .522 (12-for-23) with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs this week on his way to the award.

This year Doucette has hit at a .368 clip with 152 hits, 18 home runs, 55 RBIs and 79 runs scored.

August 23 - It was a sweet day for Babs Rooth of the County Crossing Bloodbugs, who found out he has been named the North Charles Association Player of the Week.

The Bloodbugs right fielder put up a solid .529 average and contributed 6 home runs and 10 RBIs to claim the honors.

A look at his current stats shows Rooth with a .320 average, 30 home runs, 81 RBIs and 84 runs scored. He has played in 100 games.

The premier performer in the South Charles Association this week was Chris Hirshfield of the University Point Deathclaws.

The hot-hitting 30-year-old left fielder put up a .500 average and .591 on-base percentage, piling up 9 hits in 18 at-bats, 3 home runs, 9 RBIs and 8 runs scored.

That kind of hitting got him the SCA Player of the Week honors.

For the season Hirshfield has hit .298 with 37 home runs and 126 RBIs. He has played in 88 games and scored 74 times.

CBO Draft Outlook

Last week, we looked at the top two players expected to go in the 2309 draft according to OSA scouts. Let's take a look at some of the other top prospects for the draft. These are all players that could project at 1B in the future, which means it is highly unlikely these guys are all grabbed this clumped together at the top of the draft.

3. 1B Righty Tato, East Providence - Blessed with a naturally smooth swing, Tato projects to be an outstanding all-around hitter, much like Barker Cocoa. While his defense lags, Tato can light the ball on fire and is expected to be one of the CBO's top hitters when he fully progresses.

4. 1B Token Okamoto, Beerthirty - Okamoto is one of the OSA's huge future potential, low current output players. On the team with our #7 prospect below at the same position, Okamoto had limited playing time overall. Scouts believe he may develop as a better hitter in time, showing the power potential to be a .275/30 HR player.

5. 3B Allee Bobbuh, Beantown - A senior leader for the CYL's champions, Bobbuh has only gotten better each season. Scouts believe he could be the future top hitter in the CBO with Triple Crown potential. He is also a good defensive corner infielder who may end up as a 1B in time, depending on his team's defensive teams.

6. 3B Jim Szewczyk, Rockport - Szewczyk is projected everywhere from high 1st-round to 3rd round. When he is on, he can hit with the best of them, though his numbers in the CYL were not great with the Seafarers coming from independent play. Scouts believe he has the hitting potential to be a .275/30 HR guy, which should make some team happy.

7. 1B Lone Wolf Leo Gamma-Ray, Beerthirty - The "Lone Wolf," Gamma-Ray is one of those guys who quietly does his job and takes his frustrations out on the baseball. After hitting 23 home runs in each of the past two seasons, Gamma-Ray has the power potential to hit 40+ in a full CBO season. His defense is suspect but if developed, his strong arm could land him at 3B.

BNN Report

News from the CBO, Minors, BCAC, and CYL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

1 September 2309

The September Super Post

CBO Top Performances

Vault 81 CF Stu Gains was the top performer in Augustm also setting the CBO's top performance of the season. On the August 6 14-5 victory against Diamond City, Gains had a 3 for 3 performance with three home runs, two walks, five runs, and six RBI. On the season, Gains is batting .299 with 30 home runs and 91 RBI.

The top pitching performance was by Jason Tonelli of Bunker Hill on August 4. In a 2-1 victory over The Slog in 10 innings, Tonelli pitched 8.1 innings of two-hit ball, striking out 13 in the process. On the season, Tonelli is 11-10 with a 3.88 ERA. He currently leads the CBO with 222 strikeouts (30 more than 2nd place Derek Green of Jamaica Plain) and 10.9 K/9 IP.

CBO Players of the Month

NCA Hitter - Things came easily for Ross Merchantman in August, and the Sunshine Tidings third baseman has been named the North Charles Association Batter of the Month.

He won the award on the strength of a .294 batting average, in addition to 12 home runs, 23 RBIs, 24 runs scored and a .413 on-base percentage.

So far this season Merchantman has put up a .277 batting average with 119 hits, 42 home runs and 94 RBIs.

SCA Hitter - McCrew Gillens couldn't stop smiling during the month of August. That's because he simply couldn't stop hitting and his performance vaulted him to honors as the South Charles Association Batter of the Month.

The Quincy center fielder hit .429 with 8 home runs, 27 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

This year Gillens has hit 13 home runs and posted a .287 batting average.

NCA Pitcher - Starlight starter Bill Sarnacki claimed the North Charles Association Pitcher of the Month Award today with his strong performance in August.

The 32-year-old starter tossed 49.1 innings of solid baseball, putting up a 1.64 ERA, 47 strikeouts and a 4-0 record in 6 starts.

To date this season Sarnacki has compiled a 12-3 record with a 3.38 ERA in 24 starts.

SCA Pitcher - Sheng Kawolski left little doubt in the minds of South Charles Association officials that he should be named August's Pitcher of the Month for his outstanding performance.

"I wasn't always confident at the start of a game," said Kawolski. "Sometimes it's hard to get into the flow -- the calls aren't going your way or you're trying to spot your pitches too much. You just have to relax and use what you've been taught all your life -- get back to basics -- good mechanics, control, location, keep the ball down."

The 36-year-old tossed 48.2 innings of quality baseball -- going 4-0 with a 2.40 ERA and 40 strikeouts.

This season Kawolski has registered 12 wins and 10 losses in 27 starts with a 3.12 ERA.

NCA Rookie - The Slog first baseman Kilometers Davis snagged the North Charles Association Rookie of the Month Award for August.

He posted a .291 batting average last month and collected 23 hits, 7 home runs and 17 RBIs.

In 106 games Davis is hitting .302 this season with 127 hits, 31 home runs, 83 RBIs, 46 walks, .372 OBP and has scored 72 runs.

This season Duffin is batting at a .349 clip with 8 home runs and 23 RBIs.

MML Analysis

There are just four games left in the 2309 MML season, and only one division has been clinched. In the Matt Murtagh Division, Finch Farm has clinched the division. The other three divisions have leaders who could clinch with just one more victory: Burlington, Providence, and Brookline.

1B Elijah Cox of Wellesley had the top hitting performance on August 11 against Warwick. In the game, Cox went 4 for 5 with three home runs, two walks, three runs, and seven RBI batting from the leadoff spot. In 14 games with the Wanderers, Cox batted .315 with 7 home runs and 15 RBI. He is currently with the BMU's Zetans where he has appeared in 59 games, batting .369 with 19 home runs and 42 RBI.

SP Jared Zaccone of Finch Farm had the top pitching performance in August and on the MML season on August 10 against Arlington. Zaccone fired a complete-game two-hitter with 12 strikeouts in the Shamrocks' 2-0 victory. On the season, the two-way player Zaccone is 13-7 with a 4.82 ERA in 26 starts and is batting .279 with 21 home runs and 81 RBI.

MML Players of the Month

LL Hitter - Today Turner Velociraptor was voted Legends League Batter of the Month for September. During the month the 22-year-old Finch Farm first baseman compiled a .391 batting average.

Most importantly for the Shamrocks though, he also posted 8 home runs, 20 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

Velociraptor is presently hitting at a .360 pace with 19 home runs and 48 RBIs. He has played in 59 games and scored 47 times.

SL Hitter - August was a good month for Justin Loki. The Pleasant Lake right fielder had his way with opposing pitchers all month while posting a .341 batting average and was selected as the Stars League Batter of the Month.

Last month Loki put up some solid numbers: 19 home runs, 41 RBIs, 28 runs scored and a .398 on-base percentage.

This year Loki is hitting .310, produced 133 RBIs and 63 home runs, scored 93 times and gotten on base at a .360 rate.

LL Pitcher - August's elite pitcher was Wicked Good O'Malley of Lynn. He silenced Legends League hitters the entire month and claimed the Pitcher of the Month award with 5 wins and no losses in 5 starts.

O'Malley restricted opposing hitters to a .206 batting average. He rang up 33 strikeouts in 37.1 innings of work, surrendered 20 walks and crafted a 2.41 ERA.

Checking out his stats for the season, O'Malley has registered 15 wins and 7 losses in 23 starts, posted a 3.74 ERA, and struck out 143 batters in 161.1 innings.

SL Pitcher - A bullpen specialist was picked as the #1 pitcher in the Stars League in the month of August.

The top vote-getter was Matt Demented of the Needham Archers, who finished the month with 9 saves in 10 save opportunities.

He had 2 wins and no losses with a 0.64 ERA. Demented hurled 14 innings and totaled 8 strikeouts.

Demented has 44 relief appearances this year with 28 saves. Demented has also compiled a 4-4 won-lost mark with a 2.63 ERA. In 54.2 innings he has fanned 35.

BMU Analysis

The 2309 BMU regular season is complete with four league winners now competing in the playoffs for the right to win the Boston Minor Series. Those teams will be the Brockton Irish and Mystic Pines Raybathers in the Commonwealth Association and the Neponset Park Criticals and Forest Grove Pugilists in the Massachusetts Association.

On August 12, Woburn's 2B James Black put on a show against Marblehead. Black was 4 for 5 with four home runs to tie a BMU record, four runs, and six RBI.

SP Newt Rockknee of the Grenades had the BMU's top pitching performance in August and on the season in a 9-0 victory over Outpost Zimonja. Rockknee pitched the complete-game one-hitter with a walk and 10 strikeouts to lead his team to victory.

BMU Players of the Month

CA Hitter - Pagetti Rook got another reason to celebrate today as he followed up a great month of August at the plate by winning the Commonwealth Association Batter of the Month Award.

During the month the Mystic Pines right fielder hit .366 with 9 home runs, 36 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

This year Rook is hitting .357 with 32 home runs and 111 RBIs to his credit. He has gotten on base at a .439 clip and scored 89 runs.

MA Hitter - August's Batter of the Month has been chosen by the Massachusetts Association. This month's trophy was awarded to the Hull left fielder, Kasumi Goto.

He starred by hitting .402 with a .485 on-base percentage, totaled 35 hits in 87 at-bats, 12 home runs, 25 RBIs and 29 runs scored.

To date Goto has chalked up a .386 average with 27 home runs, driven in 79 runs and scored 82 times.

CA Pitcher - The #1 pitcher this past month in the Commonwealth Association was Grits Burse of the Brockton Irish. He worked the hitters over real good, finishing August with a superb 4-0 record and a 2.68 ERA.

The Irish star made 5 starts and surrendered 26 hits in 37 innings. He struck out 47 and walked 14.

To this point in the season, Burse shows a 4-0 record, 7 starts, 49 innings, 58 strikeouts and a 2.76 ERA.

MA Pitcher - Question: Who was the #1 pitcher in the Massachusetts Association in August?

Answer: That would be Person Mabty of the Forest Grove Pugilists.
He excelled with a 4-1 mark and a 3.25 ERA in 5 starts, tossed 36 innings, fanned 28 and held opposing teams to a .303 average. That's exactly why the Massachusetts Association scribes voted him the Pitcher of the Month.

On the year Mabty has compiled a 9-3 mark with a 4.06 ERA.

GBRL Analysis

The GBRL's regular season is now done with the Pioneer Park Hackers winning a play-in game over the Greater Mass Vans to win the Southwest Division. Other division winners are the Lynn Woods Bloatflies, Nuka Express Chrono Cowboys, and Hyde Park Stingwings. Playoffs begin on Wednesday.

LF Eli Durus of the Hackers had the top hitting performance on August 29 against Beantown when he went 3 for 3 with three home runs, a walk, four runs, and five RBI. Durus finished the season with a .378 average with 37 home runs and 77 RBI after going 2nd overall in the 2308 Draft for Fort Hagen.

SP Em Belle-Ishing of the Park Street AntAgonizers served up the GBRL's top August and season performance in a great pitching performance against Rockland on August 17. Belle-Ishing pitched a one-hitter in the AntAgonizers' 13-0 victory, walking two and striking out 15.

GBRL Players of the Month

NL Hitter - The North League Batter of the Month has been chosen for August and the trophy was presented to David Bloatfly of the Parsons Asylum Greasers.

He stood out this month with a .260 batting average, 20 hits and 10 home runs, along with 25 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

This season Bloatfly is batting .271 with 90 RBIs, 75 runs scored and 38 home runs.

SL Hitter - Pioneer Park's Eli Durus wowed sportswriters in August with an award-winning performance. For his standout play he was voted the South League Batter of the Month.

He rang up a .625 batting average with 6 home runs, 13 RBIs and 12 runs scored. He also had 6 walks and a .674 on-base percentage.

Durus is presently batting .382 with 37 home runs, 68 runs scored and 77 RBIs. His OBP is .495.

NL Pitcher - It's official!

Elvali Veren of the Revere Beach Shoremen is the North League Pitcher of the Month. In August he dominated the league with 4 wins and 1 loss in 6 starts. In 43.2 innings of work Veren chalked up 38 strikeouts, 19 walks, a 2.47 ERA and held opposing hitters to a .201 batting average.

On the season Veren has a 7-8 record with a 4.91 ERA.

SL Pitcher - August's standout hurler was Em Belle-Ishing of Park Street. He muzzled South League hitters and held them in check the entire month to capture the Pitcher of the Month award.

To win the honor Belle-Ishing compiled an impressive 5-0 mark and 2.43 ERA in 5 starts. The AntAgonizers star hurler also rung up 43 strikeouts in 37 innings.

In 22 starts this season Belle-Ishing has compiled a 11-3 record and a 3.94 ERA.

BCAC Playoffs

Harvard Wins it All

A celebratory mood filled the air as the Harvard Crimson closed out the season with a 6-4 victory over the Mass Bay University Beacons at Hounds Park to capture the College Series, 4-3.

Giving the Beacons credit for a hard-fought series, Crimson players said they believed throughout the postseason that their "destiny" was to be crowned Boston Collegiate Athletic Conference champions.

"We felt like this was our year all season long," said right fielder Lossa Magic, who was named series MVP. "It was our destiny to win it and we did."

It was the 1st in franchise history. During the BCAC North Division regular season Harvard put up a 59-27 record and finished first.

"They're the champions and they deserve it," said a dejected Mass Bay University manager Victor Ayala. "We played good ball, they just played better than us."

BCAC Awards

BCAC Hitter - Togie Pitt of the Harvard Crimson proved that you can step out of the shadows and onto the stage if you've got the talent and the drive to hone your skills. Hard work, long hours and a tireless resolve paid off for him today in the form of the Boston Collegiate Athletic Conference Top Collegiate Hitter Award.

Pitt hit for a .372 average while collecting 137 hits, 34 doubles, 7 triples, 14 home runs, 79 RBIs and scoring 75 times.

He received 5 first place votes out of a possible 8. Wooga Poplar of the Commonwealth University Terriers finished second in voting with 3 first place votes, while Lossa Magic of the Harvard Crimson finished third.

Player - Team - First Place - Total Points

Atoms Crowned Champions of Vim! League

It was all about winning for the Grand Hotel Atoms -- and win they did.

There was nothing fancy in how they went about it, players said, they just prepared mentally and physically and then went out and played baseball.

"We did the little things right and we did the big things right," said catcher Adam Henderson, who was named series MVP. "Now we're the league champions."

Grand Hotel defeated the Echo Lake Harbormen by a score of 8-3 at The Lumber Yard to take the series 4-3.

"Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you make your own luck," said Grand Hotel manager Eric Schneider. "We got lucky a few times, but mostly we did the right things by being prepared for each game and playing the game the way it's meant to be played."

It's party time in Southwest Harbor. The confetti is flying and residents are smiling.

The Southwest Harbor Rippers have reached the mountaintop, capturing the 2309 Mount Desert Island Series today. They defeated the Eagle's Cove Harpooners 9-7 at The Lumber Yard to officially wrap up the series 4-3.

Asked how it feels to be a champion, center fielder Nute Gunray was to the point.

"It feels great, like a million bucks. I'm so happy right now, not just for me but for all the guys," he said. "We put a lot of work into this and deserve to be champions."

The team is planning a victory parade and fan appreciation day later in the week. Southwest Harbor finished the regular season 59-31 and claimed first place in the Small Bertha Division.

BNN Weekly Report

News from the CBO, Minors, College, and Youth Leagues

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

6 September 2309

CBO Analysis

We have 10 games left in the 2309 regular season. Two teams have clinched their leagues, but no other teams have yet to officially clinch a playoff berth. With that said, Nordhagen Beach has a Magic # of 1 to clinch a spot and University Point has a Magic # of 2. On the flip side, a total of nine teams know they will not be in the playoffs and they are just playing out the season to see where they finish in the standings. Let's take a look at the teams currently in the playoffs if the season ended today.

NCA
1. x-Starlight
2. Nordhagen Beach
3. County Crossing
4. Bunker Hill
5t. Salem
5t. Sunshine Tidings

Most of the association remained the same with the sole exception being County Crossing and Bunker Hill flip-flopping yet again. Salem and Sunshine Tidings split their last series, meaning they finish 4-4 against each other. A final tie for the 5th seed would mean either a tiebreaker game or going deeper in tiebreaker scenarios. The Killers have a Magic Number of 3 to clinch the #1 seed.

SCA
1. x-Oberland
2. University Point
3. Quincy
4. Egret
5. Jamaica Plain

Oberland has clinched the Railroad League and now have a Magic # of 5 to clinch the #1 seed. Quincy and Egret swap in the standings since the Gunners lead the season series, 4-2. Red-hot Jamaica Plain replaces Roxbury as the #5 seed and leads by three games.

Brotherhood League

With the season winding down, we will not break down all the stats and information of a team. Instead, let's take a look at the playoff scenarios in each league going into the final two weeks of the regular season.

Nordhagen Beach: We mentioned already that Nordhagen Beach has a one-game Magic # to clinch a playoff spot. If they win any of their remaining 10 games, they will clinch at least the 5th seed in the playoffs. Pretty much, they are in.

County Crossing: The Bloodbugs trail the Boys by four games and lead Salem by six, meaning they are more likely to win the league than finish below 2nd place. The Slog also has an outside shot to surpass the Bugs, but that is unlikely. Pretty much, they are in.

Salem: Tied for the 5th seed, the Witch Hats will need to find ways to win the next two weeks to clinch their spot in the dance. We will predict the Hats to miss the playoffs, though, with their remaining schedule comprised of at Starlight, at Nordhagen Beach, vs Bunker Hill, and then vs the Boys. Ouch!

The Slog: They trail both the Hats and Chemists by three games, so the Ghouls had better win a lot. Tough midseason matchups against Sunshine Tidings and Starlight, with weekend series against Nahant and Easy Town means that the Ghould can do it.

Institute League

Starlight: As mentioned at the top, Starlight has clinched the IL and are close to clinching the #1 overall seed. They are also battling Oberland for the CBO's best record.

Bunker Hill: The 75ers are attempting to clinch the #3 overall seed. While the schedule is not the easiest, they do get to face two teams, Nahant and Fort Hagen, not currently in the playoff picture. The 75ers also have matchups versus the Killers and at Salem.

Sunshine Tidings: Tied for the 5th spot and five back of 2nd place in the IL, the Chemists' best shot is as the 5 seed. Their next three series could set the tone for them with a trip to The Slog, a home series against the Silver Shroud, and a home series versus the Bloddbugs. They then travel to Starlight to complete the regular season.

Minutemen League

University Point: The Deathclaws got cold at the wrong time, getting swept by the Red Rockets over the weekend and now leading Quincy by only four games. We mentioned they have a Magic # of 2 to clinch a playoff spot, but they could see themselves as that 5 seed if they let Quincy and the Rockets continue their strong runs.

Quincy: The Gunners are 8-2 in their last 10 and looking like a playoff team. Still, they are only four games up, which means a sudden slump could see them out of the playoff running altogether.

Jamaica Plain: The Rockets got cold but now they are hot again, winning eight-straight including that sweep of the Deathclaws. With a three-game lead over Roxbury, Jamaica Plain controls its own playoff destiny. This week will be tough, though with consecutive road trips to Egret and Univesity Point before finishing with Diamond City and Spectacle Island, two teams out.

Railroad League

Oberland: We mentioned already that the T-51s are close to clinching the #1 seed. Now they want home-field advantage in every series, looking to win more games than Starlight.

Egret: The Ninjas have been quiet good all season, and now they have a four-game advantage over Roxbury to clinch 2nd place. However, they face only teams with winning records to complete the season: Jamaica Plain, Vault 81, Quincy, and Roxbury.

Roxbury: The Rad Sox are in serious danger of missing the playoffs for a second-straight season after a 4-6 stretch saw them fall behind other teams. Now, the Sox need wins and help. They can help themselves with a series win over the Ninjas to finish the season. Otherwise, they have one of the easiest closing schedules with two series against Atom sandwiching a trip to FHE.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

August 30 - A hot-hitting week got Needham Tickler the North Charles Association Player of the Week trophy. He really wore out his welcome with league pitchers.

The Salem first baseman slammed them for a .700 average, 14 hits in 20 at-bats, 3 home runs, 6 RBIs and scored 5 runs.

In the postgame press conference, Tickler shared his hitting philosophy with the BNN scribes: "Just look for the seams and hit between them... nothin' more than that."

Tickler on the season is batting .330 with 31 home runs. His totals include 61 RBIs and 66 runs scored. He has played in 94 games.

The top batter in the South Charles Association last week was Diamond Ball, who batted .400 and towered above everybody with a 5-game hitting barrage.

During the week Ball banged out a .400 batting average (10-for-25), 6 home runs, 17 RBI and scored 9 runs.

Today the Spectacle Island second baseman received the SCA Player of the Week Award.

On the year Ball is hitting .342 with 138 hits, 28 home runs, 86 RBIs, .416 OBP and has scored 70 runs.

September 6 - It was a week to remember for Birdie Burdi. After wrapping up a torrid week at the plate, the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud left fielder was named the North Charles Association Player of the Week.

Burdi collected 11 hits in 16 at-bats for a .688 average. He also accounted for 6 RBIs, 3 home runs and scored 6 runs.

Looking at his present stats, Burdi has compiled a .277 batting average in 107 games with a .356 on-base percentage, while hitting 17 home runs and driving in 68 runs.

Nobody in the South Charles Association had a better week than Rick Pickle... Noooo-body! That's why he was voted the Player of the Week.

During the week the Egret right fielder compiled a .450 batting average (9-for-20) with 4 home runs, 8 RBI and scored 5 runs.

Currently Pickle is batting .305 with 18 home runs, 94 RBIs and 51 runs scored.

CBO Draft Outlook

We looked at more draft prospects in our last update, and we will look at a few more players in the OSA's mock draft. This week, though, we are leaving the corner infielders off and looking at players rated at two other positions in the OSA mock: LF and C.

9. LF Aaron Annism South Beach Waves - Annis saw a drop in production in his senior season, which could lead to a drop in the draft well below being the 9th-overall pick. Scouts see him as a power hitter first, so he should expect to bat in the middle of the lineup wherever he is. He can play all OF positions but projects as a LF in the pros.

12. LF Ramon Gill, Concord Ice Boys - OSA scouts love Gill's potential, but his lack of productivity may be a problem for CBO teams looking to move someone up quickly. His best quality is his leadership ability, which means he would make a great coach some day. Whether or not his average potential as a contact hitter with a good potential as a power hitter gets him a slot in the CBO is yet to be seen.

13. LF Doorbell Arg, Lexington Minuteboys - Another OF who could play any position in the OF, Arg is most likely to find comfort in left field since he does not have the greatest arm. He was highly efficient with the Co-Lex, now Lexington, team all four years, and he has the potential to be one of the CBO's premier hitters if he fully develops.

14. C Luff Gurr, Brockton Claws - One of the top hitting catchers, Gurr could be a top pick if his defense was anywhere above average. Scouts love his approach to the plate and think some further bulking up could make him one of the CBO's top power hitters. Gurr projects as a catcher, but he could play a corner IF or OF position, too.

15. LF Cameron Triggs, Covenant Dandy Boys - Triggs has great discipline at the plate and rarely swings and misses even on off-speed pitches. Although he only batted .289 his senior season, scouts believe that Triggs can be a top average producer. He is a corner OF, but his defense does not stand out in any way. A decent arm could eventually land him in RF.

There were a few races that came right to the end. I didn't do the 115-game update like I usually do, so I will mention how close some came to being a different seed or no seed at all in the final regular season update.

BNN Weekly Report

News from the CBO, Minors, College, and Youth Leagues

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

20 September 2309

CBO Analysis

The 2309 regular season is now complete, and our final 10 teams are now set. Commissioner Nate Howard also made a rookie draft announcement due to expansion, so we will detail that below. For now, here are the playoff seedings heading into the postseason.

NCA
1. Starlight
2. Nordhagen Beach
3. County Crossing
4. Bunker Hill
5. Sunshine Tidings

The only change in status from two weeks ago was that Sunshine Tidings took a game lead on Salem and then was bale to maintain that lead right up until the final day when the Chemists won and the Witch Hats lost to give Sunshine Tidings a two-game advantage in the 5th seed race.

SCA
1. Oberland
2. University Point
3. Quincy
4. Egret
5. Jamaica Plain

No teams changed seeding in the final two weeks with every team doing what it needed to do to maintain its place. The Red Rockets were tied with Quincy heading into the final game, but the Gunners won while Jamaica Plain lost to set the final standings. University Point also had a scare by struggling down the stretch, allowing both Quincy and the Rockets to contend for the league title. However, the Claws did just enough to hold on to 1st place despite its last series victory coming August 20-22 against Goodneighbor.

Brotherhood League

Nordhagen Beach flexed its muscles down the stretch by going 8-2, which is the hottest record in the CBO down the stretch, and comfortably winning the BL by six games. While they finished 1st in the NCA in runs scored (625), they will be without one of their run producers in 2B Jumper Hayes (.289/12/52/58 R). Still, the pitching is good, giving the Party Boys a chance to return to the Sole Survivor Series.

County Crossing may not be the force they once were, but they are still good. No other team in the BL was able to maintain pace with the Bloodbugs down the stretch, making the BL just a two-team league in the playoffs.

Salem needed to be good down the stretch to earn a playoff spot, but they were just average, going 5-5. One year after being the top seed in the NCA, the Witch Hats will be watching the playoffs.

Institute League

Starlight was consistently good all season, easily earning the top spot and resting some starters down the stretch. We mentioned that the Boys have a championship-caliber pitching staff, but it was the Killers who were first in the CBO in staff ERA (3.56), allowing a CBO-low 442 runs, 24 fewer than 2nd Nordhagen Beach (466).

Bunker Hill struggled down the stretch and not only barely won the 2nd spot in the IL but came close to missing the playoffs completely. By going 4-6 in the last two weeks, the 75ers enter the playoffs tied with University Point for the coldest late-season stretch of playoff teams. Their struggles also cost them the chance to be the 3rd seed entering the playoffs.

Where Bunker Hill struggled, Sunshine Tidings got hot down the stretch, not only making them tied for 2nd with two other teams for the hottest teams entering the playoffs but perhaps giving the Chemists advantages over their IL foes, which would be the first two teams they would meet in the playoffs.

Minutemen League

The Deathclaws remained cold but still held on to the ML title. Still, they are tied with Bunker Hill as the worst record down the stretch, making us question their title shot in 2309. We mentioned their injury struggles, but they are mostly healthy except for RF Tomas Jones who could be available in either their first matchup or the SCA Championship Series if they get that far.

Along with league mates Jamaica Plain, Quincy was tied for the best record down the stretch in the SCA. That helped the Gunners hold off the Red Rockets and Egret for the 3rd seed in the playoffs. It is also Quincy's first trip to the playoffs since 2299, so it may be tough sledding for them to make a run. The talent is most certainly there.

As mentioned above, the Rockets were hot to finish, keeping themselves at a comfortable distance from Roxbury for the final playoff spot. Jamaica Plain lost the season series to Quincy, 8 games to 4, so they would have been the 5th seed even if the two teams finished tied. So, the Rockets needed the Gunners to be colder. Still, the Red Rockets are a good team and capable fo making a run from the 5th spot.

Railroad League

Oberland cruised to the #1 seed, and they still did enough to earn the top record in the CBO, giving them home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, including the Sole Survivor Series. The T-51s are the SCA's most complete team, and they are the favorites to make a return trip to the Sole Survivor Series.

We mentioned throughout the season that Egret was a quietly good team. They were not able to secure the 3rd seed, falling just a game short, but they were able to hold off the Rad Sox for a second-straight playoff appearance. They will have a tough time making their way to the Sole Survivor Series, but the Ninjas could do it.

Roxbury has to be disappointed as they have a good team but ended up with the worst injury luck, including losing starting outfielders Ben Pawlak and Deerlord Fugivmee for the season, along with SP Quest Dawg. Based on the WAR of those three players, the Rad Sox would not only have been a playoff team, but they would have been a title contender. Instead, they need to heal up and make a run again next year.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

September 13 - Speak softly and carry a big stick and you could win the North Charles Association Player of the Week Award just like Ricky Ticky Laughy.

He really dazzled on the diamond this week with a .450 average to take home the trophy. The Sunshine Tidings center fielder went 9-for-20, drove in 11 runs, scored 4 times and hit 3 home runs.

This season Laughy is batting .271 with 69 RBIs, 59 runs scored and 28 home runs.

Sum Downie is respected by most Roxbury Rad Sox fans for his no-frills style of play. The 27-year-old left fielder went about his business with vigor last week to grab the South Charles Association Player of the Week honors.

He compiled a .524 average (11-for-21) with 3 home runs, 7 RBIs and 6 runs scored.

So far this season Downie has 29 home runs and a .266 batting average.

September 20 - His hard work and hustle paid off this week. The hard-working and hard-playing Needham Tickler was rewarded with the North Charles Association Player of the Week honors.

The scrappy Salem Witch Hats first baseman hit .714 while collecting 10 hits in 14 at-bats, 1 home run and 4 RBIs.

In the current season, Tickler has put up a .354 batting average with 131 hits, 36 home runs, 73 runs batted in and scored 80 runs.

It was announced today that University Point left fielder David Seaweed was named the South Charles Association Player of the Week Award for his superb play last week.

During the week he compiled a .444 batting average (8-for-18) with 4 home runs, 10 RBI and scored 7 runs.

In his 2309 season totals, Seaweed has 14 home runs, .310 BA, .374 OBP, 55 RBIs and 34 runs scored.

CBO Records and Accomplishments

Barker Earns Triple Crown

University Point first baseman Barker Cocoa had a season that places him among the greats, winning the 2nd Triple Crown in CBO history. Clearly one of the best players in the South Charles Association this year, he compiled a .405 batting average with 169 hits, 24 doubles, 1 triple, 55 home runs and 147 RBIs.

His skipper said, "I have been around a few years and have never seen anything like the year Barker had this year. It was truly remarkable."

Records Tied and Broken

There were a total of five season statistics tied or broken in 2309:

Runs scored: 148 - 1B Barker Cocoa, University Point - Cocoa shattered his own record of 130 set in 2307. He has now had the three highest seasons for runs produced and 4 of the top 6.

Singles: 139 - SS Jake Doucette, Jamaica Plain - Doucette set the record on the second-to-last game of the season, surpassing Aesed Hayjen's 2306 record of 138.

Saves: 41 - CL William Butcherman, Oberland - Butcherman tied Andy Helium's 2305 record.

Pitching Games Started: 33 - SP Cleveland Heep, Fort Hagen - Heep started one more game than the 32 set by three different pitchers: Scruffy Taguchi (2307), Max Grove (2306), and Wilson Beachball (2303). Heep represents a different type of pitcher in that he started 33 but pitched 45 games for a total of 80.0 innings. Silver Shroud pitching coach Milk Bottle Dickson described Heep as an "opener" relief pitcher since he was used early in games and was often pulled by the 3rd inning at latest.

HR Allowed: 51 - SP Noah Williams, Diamond City - Williams struggled mightily in his first season as a starting pitcher, shattering the previous record of 43 HRs allowed in 2308 by Copper Geffre. Interestingly, had Williams not been in the equation, two other pitchers, Geffre and Major Tom Brennan, gave up 42 homers this season, putting them both one off the previous mark.

CBO Draft Outlook

This time, let's take a look at a quintuplet of outfielders expected to go early in the 2309 Rookie Draft.

17. CF Aaron Wright, Beantown - The four-year starter for this season's CYL champions, Wright is a delight to watch on the field. Though he does not have the discipline to be as good on the base path, Wright is a speedy outfielder who can get to balls many cannot. In the batter's box, scouts like his ability to recognize pitches and he just needs to work on making better, solid contact when he knows what's coming. He could be a good fastball hitter and could develop into a player with decent power.

18. LF Gremlin T. Squearfish, Beantown - Another highly-talented player from the Sprouts, Squearfish was considered the top incoming freshman in 2306. While he is not the most powerful hitter, he is great at putting the bat on the ball and has frustrated many pitchers by fouling off a bevy of two-strike pitches. Scouts believe he can eventually battle for average and OBP titles, making him a great top of the order hitter. He is considered to be a decent, not outstanding, defensive outfielder, projecting at either of the corner OF spots in the CBO.

19. RF A-Train Gilmore, North Providence - If speed kills, Gilmore has plenty of it. Gilmore is expected to be one of the top base-running prospects in the draft and a great candidate to hit 2nd in a lineup. He has a good amount of power that should get only better as his body matures. He still needs to work on making better contact, though, as he has swung and missed at lots of pitches and tends to fly out a lot while going for home runs on the wrong pitches. Scouts consider Gilmore a high ceiling, low floor prospect, which might mean he either drops in the draft or goes to a team with a good hitting coach in the GBRL to develop him.

20. CF Taffy Dare, Stoneham - Dare is a good defensive CF but could project as a great defensive LF due to his range and skill set. He is capable of hitting for high average, though he only hit .299 his senior season with the Commandos. For whatever reason, he does not get good jumps on the basepaths despite his speed, resulting in lots of caught stealing outs in his youth career.

22. LF Dashawn Butts, Needham - Scouts love Butts' swing, but he gets fooled a lot on off-speed pitches, something he will need to work on in the minors. When he does make contact, he is pretty good at hitting the ball where fielders are not. He lacks in speed and has solid defensive skills, which projects him almost purely as a LF at the next level.

Under Luna the Cave Crickets finished first in the North Bradberton Division with a record of 53-37.

The premier rookie performer in the Nuka World League was Wild right fielder Hicky Loftin. He was honored today by league officials as the 2309 Nuka Baby Bottle Award winner.

What does it take to win a Nuka Power Glove Award? It's a combination of good hands, knowing how to play the hitters, all-out hustle and a willingness to sacrifice your body to make a play. Good speed and a good arm never hurt either, but not always required. This year's all-defense team in the Nuka World League consists of:

Pitcher
Ed Homestead (Dark Bloodworms)

Mousey Rooney (Grape Painted Ghouls)

First Baseman

Grand Hotel Atoms field manager Eric Schneider has brought a winning attitude to the team and the city. His no-nonsense approach, work ethic and baseball experience have paved the way for success.

This season the Atoms parlayed his managerial skills and some talented ballplayers into a first place spot in the Vim! League Harbor Division standings. Grand Hotel finished the year with a 50-40 record.

To everybody's delight Schneider was voted the 2309 Vim! League Manager of the Year by the baseball writers.

"Mr. Schneider doesn't take any nonsense. If you aren't doing your job, he's not afraid to call you on it," noted one of his ballplayers. "But the team wouldn't want to play for anyone else. He's tough, demanding, but he treats everyone fairly and doesn't play favorites. Nobody gets pampered on his ballclub."

This year's outstanding newcomer has been selected and the honor goes to the Eden Meadows rookie Dex Labb -- the recipient of the 2309 Vim! League Vim! Fresh Face Award.

The talented Anglers right fielder took the trophy by hitting .343 in 88 games this season and finished with 120 hits, 15 home runs, 54 RBIs and 67 runs scored.

Grand Hotel Atoms closer Little Rat Swickard said he loves to come into the game when the outcome is in jeopardy.

He certainly did a good job of impacting his team's outcomes this season, as he has been named the winner of the 2309 Vim! Refresh Reliever Award for the Vim! League.

"There's no better feeling than running in from the bullpen with the game on the line and your heart pumping," Swickard said.

On the season, the Quincy, Massachusetts native had 21 saves in 37 relief appearances, 49 strikeouts in 38.2 innings and a record of 3 wins and 4 losses to go with his 2.09 ERA.

For the past five seasons, they were Institute League champions but fell to 3rd this season. The 75ers are back for the second straight season and fourth overall. Last season, these two teams were the 2nd and 3rd seeds, respectively, with the 75ers prevailing in the NCA Semifinal in five games on their way to winning it all.

For the Chemists, 2309 had to be a disappointment with them falling back in the standings behind Starlight and Bunker Hill. Sunshine Tidings finished 2nd in the NCA in scoring (623) and 8th in runs allowed (555).

On offense, the big reason for their runs success was the long ball, where they were 1st with 208. Six players in their lineup hit 20 or more home runs, driving the high-powered offense. Leaders were 3B Ross Merchantman (.260/44/101), 1B Dusty Brownell (.279/42/78), RF Baktu DaWell (.309/31/68), CF Ricky Ticky Laughy (.264/28/71), SS Lernz Tentsleep (.263/22/77), and C Red Sone (.284/20/76).

Pitching definitely struggled in 2309 with the Starters finishing 7th in ERA (4.47) and 9th in Bullpen ERA (4.78). The three playoff starters--Eugene Gym (14-8, 4.20), Mike Rubric (16-8, 3.78), and Joey Dimes (12-11, 4.37)--all had success but can be prone to losses when the offense is not generating runs. In the bullpen, much of the success will have to come from CL Cush Baker (31 SV, 3.59) who led the bullpen in ERA.

Bunker Hill struggled against 2309 playoff teams, with their best winning percentage being .500 against Nordhagen Beach. If they are going to repeat as champions, the 75ers will need to learn how to win. They are decently good in statistics, finishing 3rd in runs scored (615) and 5th in runs allowed (521).

The offense's best quality is that their starters are much better than their bench players, meaning that Bunker Hill needs to be healthy to survive. That already hurts with star SS Aaron Squire (.291/25/63) being out for the playoffs. Hitters 2-6, though, are formidable, giving the 75ers a chance in every game: 2B Emerald Sapphire (.307/11/43), CF Jig McGhee (.322/19/54), 1B Matt Stickhouse (.322/35/99), LF Donny Kowalski (.281/30/91), and 3B Grool Manycaps (.290/18/63).

Pitching was also decent through out the staff with the Starters (3.88) and Bullpen (4.07) both finishing 4th in ERA. The playoff starters will be Jason Tonelli (11-13, 3.89), Max Thunderdome (16-10, 3.89), and Corey Ware (8-9, 4.16) with part-time starters Hangman Alley (11-4, 3.03) and Mike Cartrette (7-2, 4.61) moving to the bullpen. Alley may be the biggest surprise since he was the most successful starter in 2309. In the bullpen, CL Jim Livermore (24 SV, 3.76) has adjusted well from his move from being a starter in Fort Hagen to full-time closer with Bunker Hill.

Prediction

Based on the season series, it appears that Sunshine Tidings has the 75ers number. However, when looking at playoff success and the actual talent of the teams and directions they are taking, it is hard to bet against Bunker Hill. Assuming all is as it seems, we are going to take the defending champions to move on. Bunker Hill 2, Sunshine Tidings 1

SCA Playoffs - #5 Jamaica Plain Red Rockets (71-49) vs #4 Egret Ninjas (71-49)

Season Series

Egret 6, Jamaica Plain 2
April 28-29 @JP: Egr 4-2, JP 5-4
June 1, 3 @Egr: Egr 6-2, Egr 4-2
July 27-28 @JP: Egr 6-4, Egr 7-5
September 7-8 @Egr: Egr 12-1, JP 7-3

Analysis

Jamaica Plain makes their sixth straight playoff appearance and ninth in the past 10 seasons. With all those playoff appearances, the deepest they have reached is the SCA Championship Series, where they are 0-3. For Egret, they are making their fourth appearance and second straight. In 2305, the Ninjas almost pulled the impossible and got as far as the SCA Championship Series where they fell to University Point. This will be the first time the Red Rockets and Ninjas meet in the playoffs.

The Rockets were a good team in a top-heavy association, but how they measure against the other playoff teams is hard to measure. Of course, going 2-6 against the Ninjas raises some flags. Still, Jamaica Plain was 4th in runs scored (612) and 5th in runs allowed (523) in the SCA, putting them above average in both offense and pitching.

The Red Rockets were good in both home runs (173) and bases stolen (48), where they finished 3rd in both in the SCA. RF Ken Debate (.319/45/113) was the unquestioned leader on offense. Both SS Jake Doucette (.355/20/65/16 SB) and CF Hid Matsumoto (.222/18/54/22 SB) helped generate Debate's 113 RBI, third in the SCA with his 45 homers being second.

On the mound, the Rockets were 3rd in Starters ERA (4.09) and 4th in Bullpen ERA (4.28). Despite their good ERA, they made interesting decisions in their starters 2 and 3 with Dobbie Radoncis (8-10, 5.02) and Tim Fusion (12-8, 4.02) getting the nod over Chris Deathclaw (14-8, 3.89). Derek Green (12-12, 3.40) is the ace, but he will need better run support in the playoffs. In the bullpen, CL Rob O'Cop (28 SV, 2.68) was the leader with help from former closer Doug Deel El (5-0, 3.47) and RP Glenn Patnode (5-3, 3.19).

Egret was only 5th in runs scored (604) but tops in runs allowed (472) in the SCA. For playoff success, they are built to win and could be a true title contender. We called them quiet throughout the regular season, but the Ninjas have put together a good team.

The Ninjas are a good team overall, but one place where they lack in is instant runs, finishing 10th in home runs (113). They are 1st in stolen bases (79), meaning they are good at manufacturing runs. 2B Justin Tootles (.328/10/43/29 SB) was good at getting on base and then advancing from the leadoff spot. CF Pockets Aintfull (.290/3/56/18 SB) also got on base and advanced. RF Rick Pickle (.305/20/102) capitalized on batting often with runners in scoring position. C Plump Jack Korson (.284/13/64) had decent success from the 7th spot in the lineup.

Egret was 1st in Starters ERA (3.66) but 6th in Bullpen ERA (4.49). All four starters finished with an ERA below 4.00: Tup Mallory (13-6, 3.39), Max Grove (11-13, 3.67), Admiral Kelm (18-7, 3.60), and Hry Caje (12-9, 3.99). Since only three will start in the playoffs, Caje will move to the bullpen where he is expected to take over the closer position from regular season CL Midnight Flowers (32 SV, 3.78). RP Clueless Gunsmith (5-2, 2.73) will also help in the pen.

Prediction

While the Red Rockets have all the playoff experience, we believe that Egret is a team worth watching both this season and in the future. We could be dead wrong, but we are expecting the Ninjas to sweep this series. Egret 2, Jamaica Plain 0

You know early in the season I thought Roxbury was back, but they ended up falling short. The Minutemen League had a nice race at the end so cool all three teams ended up getting in. Though I don't think any of them are making the finals

My non educated guess will be Oberland over Starlight in seven. I think the easy divisional races will serve them well after their byes. I think the Railroad League was tougher, and it will serve them well against tougher teams
