1991, second half
Final season standings:
The Knights, Rebels and Blackbirds battled it out in the ABC East, but in the end the Knights emerged the "victors," which does not say much given their 80-82 record. If you think the ABC East was bad, the ABC North was worse. The Fireflies won the division with a 78-84 record. The Lakers traded for help at the deadline but suffered through a terrible second half to finish 71-91, and that slide cost manager George O'Farrell his job. The Gators pushed their way into first place in the ABC South and won that division, posting their best record yet. The Panthers and Sharks, winning 99 and 91 games yet missing the playoffs while teams with 80 and 78 wins made it in, joined in with the Stallions (who also missed the playoffs despite 90 wins, again) in their petition to bring back the wild card. Any of those three teams would have won the ABC East or North by a large margin. The Hornets beat out the Stallions again for the NBC East. The Bears and Seals ran away with the NBC North and West. The Roadrunners sunk to the bottom of the NBC South, as the Washington Eagles rose up and took the division. The Bobcats were in the hunt, but ultimately fell short. Will Newman did not get to 437 wins, as he ended the season at 433. He had announced that his season would be his last, but reportedly is considering coming back for 1992 to try to break the record one more time. In the playoffs, the Sea Monsters and Gators were heavily favored to win their Division Series against their sub-.500 opponents. The Gators swept the Knights, but the Fireflies put a scare into the Sea Monsters, taking them to a Game 5 before Seattle ultimately emerged victorious. The Bears lost to the Seals in five games, while the Hornets came back from down 2 games to 0 to win their series. The Hornets took quick care of the Seals to advance to their fourth straight World Series. The Sea Monsters took down the Gators, setting up a rematch from 1990. The Sea Monsters won Games 1 and 2 at home before dropping all three in Philadelphia. Back in Seattle, the Hornets could not close them out in Game 6. In Game 7, Seattle won 8-5 to capture their second straight championship and send the Hornets to their fourth World Series loss in a row. |
