Role combinations

Which role combinations provide the best results, in your opinion?

it's more the player than the role. If you have a guy in a role to which he's not suited, you'll get sub-optimal results.

But for a 1st line, I try to do something like playmaker -> sniper -> garbage collector
2nd line is a perimeter shooter with 2 power forwards
It really depends on what players you have, though.

3rd line is more defensive oriented, so I have two way forwards, counter attackers, aggressive forecheckers, up and down wingers and shadows.

I do wish there was a way for players to have different roles on special teams, though.

4th line is usually grinders and agitators

Really depends on how your own team is structured, but for the top two lines i usually have one offensive minded defenseman and one more defensive defensemen. The third pair is usually two very defensive minded defensemen.

I've noticed that, as they develop, most defensemen eventually turn into solid two-way players.

A lot of them will, but every so often you will develop an offensive one. With defense you usually have to trade or find free agents to sign to get the right mix.
