Ohtani released by Dodgers.

In my sim, Ohtani got released by the Dodgers in June 2026 and later signed a minor league contract with the Angels. I have no idea how or why they let him go, or what happened with his remaining contract. He is healthy and rated 65 overall. Something is really off.

You can attach screenshots by going to the "Go Advanced" button under these text boxes. How badly did he age? What are his ratings (I realize scouting may be on but still be nice to see them falling on the scouting tab). I find the aging curve far, far, far too steep around age 32 and I wonder if it is that as much as anything.

Someone else had a similar issue, with Ohtanibeing released in a league with no DH.

Do you have age and/or eligibility limits in your minors? Was he coming off a rehab assignment? Did the AI take him off the 40-man roster for some reason? Did you edit anything?

Nothing but default settings + 0.900 aging speed 1.050 dev. speed, coaching turned off. He had some injuries prior to his release, but nothing too serious. I don't know about the 40-man roster.

In my league, the Dodgers released a fully healthy Ohtani in 2025. St. Louis then picked him up, paying $13.9 million, only to release him again after just seven starts as a starting pitcher. I thought this might be because I set the NL as a non-DH league, and the game couldnÂ’t handle it (every other setting is at default). Even though his bat is essentially wasted in my league, his SP rating of 59 should still make him valuable enough to keep.

If your league has a DH and they still released him, then maybe the DH setting isnÂ’t the issue. I can pretend the game is taking a stand against his gambling controversy.

In the no DH league do you still have 2 way players enabled?

The game has always had issues identifying the value of players that go both ways. It has issues with multiple positions with low experience.

It can be very noticeable with created players and their demands as a FA.

Yes. I have 2-way players enabled. If I turn 2-way players off would an American league team stop using Ohtani as a pitcher?

I have no idea. I'm just spitballing ideas as I have no clue what the AI could be thinking. I'd hope the AI would change his position to a pitcher. May need to run let the AI make all roster moves for it to take effect.

Was it a 2024 start?

If it was an older start he might not develop in the same way.

I find this hard to believe. Next you’ll tell me that Trout played 140 or more games that year and the Angels had a winning season.

I've had a lot of bizarre Ohtani outcomes with his injury in 2024 (standard game, no changes to DH or anything). I've seen the Dodgers continuously demote him to OKC for several years despite no talent change and not on a rehab assignment. I've started wondering if it's when I extend his injury time beyond the standard 9 months to ensure he doesn't pitch in the playoffs (while keeping it day to day) and I'll be looking at experimenting with that more in my saves.

I think part of the problem is the game doesn't seem to recognize DH as being a position outside of the lineup card. The game will freely reposition players based on experience but since DH isn't listed it seems to discount it as an actual position and deems it no value.

Ohtani is seen as a pitcher first and two way second, take away his position as a pitcher and the game doesn't know what to do with him. Give him any experience at any position and the game will change him to that but never to a DH.

Since 24 there seems to be a big push to defensive value inflating ratings, I wouldn't be surprised if because of this the DH got the short end of the stick

I've felt for some time that OOTP should just have pitchers in the batters section and vice versa because these issues have come up a lot for me in the past. Not sure why they have the current system where you need to select for 2 way players.
