Frank Emmer 1916
Frank William Emmer colorized with the Cincinnati Reds. The first image was shared by tnfoto while the other I found in the Cinemaodyssey facepack. I used Palette.fm and Pica.ai on the larger image while the other was done by hand.

George Harper 1916
What a gem! I would be most interested in knowing your source, no problem if you don't wish to share.
Yes, I agree with the observation about the software not always enhancing, but that does seem to be more uncommon. Here is an image of George Harper, I had to extract it from the Cincinnati Reds team photo of 1924 as I could not find an alternative for that year. Be most grateful if an improved option was used. With a career batting average of .303 and an OPS of .836 Harper was an accomplished outfielder. Hit the majors with Detroit in 1916 and spent 3 years with the Tigers as a back-up. That outfield being illuminated with Cobb, Heilmann and Veach. Returned to the Majors in 1922 after a 4 year gap with the Reds and established himself as the starting right-fielder and clean-up hitter. Began the 1924 season with the Reds but spent most of the season as the Phillies starting right-fielder normally batting second. In all was the normal starting outfielder with 5 different National League teams, which must be close to a record. Earning that capacity also with the Giants, Cardinals and finally the Braves. No, I don't mind. I couldn't get a good result on the face enhancement on your original. I found a shot on ebay with a better face (see attached). Identified as coming from 1922, I thought two years was close enough. Of course, the uniform was a lot different than '24. Had to remove the pinstripes, get rid of the circle around the jersey "P", lighten the cap top, and add a cap logo. All of that was done in Photoshop Elements after general cleanup/enhancement via Topaz Photoshop AI. After the uniform changes, background and face colorization was done with palette.fm. Uniform colorization required revisiting Elements. Final step (probably overkill) was a slight face "crisp up" in Topaz Gigapixel. For what it's worth, I acquired the Topaz apps for use with personal photography. The fact that they work so well for vintage restorations was a side benefit. |

Transformation
Thanks for the behind the scenes. I really like how much light you can get on the face. Many times the ballcaps add so much shadow.

Ducky Holmes 1906
Howard Elbert "Ducky" Holmes colorized. I took the second image from the Cinemaodyssey facepack. The other image is a bit blurry but I could not resist including an image of "Ducky" Holmes wearing a uniform with a duck on it.

I went back to the Getty original and pulled the same shot from there...got a better result with that. Caveats apply. Any time the starting image is that small, you may get a nice looking result but it may or may not be a good representation of how the individual really looked. There are some good larger images of Harper online (i.e. St. Louis, New York) and I don't think the attached Cincy enhancement looks all that much like them. On the other hand, compared to the original Reds team photo, it's a plausible result. Also, cap and jersey pinstripes didn't survive the enlargement. It could probably be faked with some more Photoshopping but I got lazy. ![]() |

Bob Hasty 1919

This image with the Philadelphia Athletics, attached, does date from 1924 but is not of the same quality of earlier images of Bob Hasty so I don't have great expectations in terms of the outcome compared to what would be the result from those earlier examples.
