Remarkable season at age 41
I'm in year 3(1952) of my current random debut league. Mid August. Roger Clemens at age 41 is currently 23-3 for the first place Washington Senators. Rogers first 2 seasons in the league were less than stellar, so in no way did anyone see this coming. Clemens at one point during the season rolled off 18 straight victories. He then had a bad start giving up 7 earned runs to end his winning streak, with his ERA climbing to 1.98. Since that dud, he's went 4-0 with a no-hitter and a 2 hitter. His Senators are in a battle with the Philadelphia Athletics for the AL pennant. When August began the Senators held a 6 1/2 game lead over the Athletics. The Athletics swept the Senators in a 3 game series and then continued to cut into Washington's lead, taking over 1st place by a 1/2 game. Washington then returned the favor, sweeping the Athletics in a 3 game set. When I left for work this morning, the Senators were back out to a 3 game lead in the AL.
Philadelphia is not without their own surprising performer on the pitching mound. John D'aquisto is currently 19-4 on the season for the Athletics and that's with him losing his last to starts. D'aquisto's performance is why I absolutely love OOTP and random debut. No way did I think D'aquisto had this in him. D'aquisto's most wins in ML season was 12 and I think he lost 14 that year. In fact, I think he only had one above .500 season and he pitched out of the bullpen that year. I'm pulling for him big time. The Atletics also feature a very young Sandy Koufax on the mound. Koufax, a rookie, started the season in the bullpen, but quickly made his way into the rotation. He's tallied 9 victories, but has been hot and cold so far. Haven't seen him for quite a while, but I used to see John D'aquisto posting his paintings on Facebook all the time. Would love to see him again, so I could let him know he's having a magical 1952 season

Well Roger turned 42 and he's won 3 more games and lost 1 more. He's now 26-4 on the season. His Senators are on the verge of losing the pennant though, as Philadelphia's magic number is down to 1 with 4 games left to play. In the NL it looks like the Cubs are heading to the World Series barring their total collapse and flawless play by either the Pirates or Reds.
If Roger gets another start he will more than likely end up with 300 innings pitched. He's made 34 starts so far. I so love real baseball. |

Clemens will finish the season 27-4. 305 innings pitched, 27 complete games, 9 shutouts. 1.77 ERA, 0.93 WHIP. And his team will finish the season in second place. The day he won game 27 is day his team was eliminated. John D'aquisto won game 23 to clinch the pennant for Philadelphia.

Roger signed a free agent deal with the Boston Red Sox following the 1952 season. He now has the Red Sox in the thick of the AL Pennant race, a 1/2 game behind the Chicago White Sox. Roger is having another strong season at the ripe old age of 42. Not as dominant as last season, but he's still on pace for 20 wins heading into August. Clemens is joined on the Red Sox pitching staff by Bobby Mathews, Bill Bernhard and Ben Tincup. Bobby Mathews is having his best season so far. Will be interesting to see if the Cy Young award comes down to a battle between 2 teammates.
Roger Maris is battling Don Demeter for the home run lead in the American League. In the NL Sammy Sosa is leading the home run pack. The AL race is a close one. As mentioned the White Sox and Red Sox are separated by just a 1/2 game, with the Tigers and Indians just 3 games back in 3rd place. Glad the AL is close, as the NL is far from it. The Cincinnati Redlegs lead the NL by 15 games and show no signs of allowing anyone to close the gap. |

Random debut is a great format.
I recall running a historical sim from '77 to 2000 and Clemens was a monster.
