Can someone help me understand?

I added Christy Matthewson to my team this year. Can someone help me understand why he was so terrible?

I've included screenshots of his stats and my strategy settings. I've got to be doing something wrong with strategy, because I see similar crappy stats from Wheeler and Flaherty while the same card on other teams is winning the Cy Young...

I'm just looking for some underlying principles that I must be missing...

Everything you know is wrong
Black is white, up is down and short is long
And everything you thought was just so important doesn't matter
Everything you know is wrong
Just forget the words and sing along
All you need to understand is
Everything you know is wrong

Well

You finished fourth in a division where my team finished 3rd. It was a super tough division, My team (and I suspect the other two as well) were relegated from Diamond the previous week.

The Conference average team scored 750 runs, the three of us who finished ahead of you scored an average of over 880 runs. Your team DEFF was 17th, not good. So your defense leaked a few more runs than you would like. 20 copies of Mathewson were in the league, his ERAs ranged from 3.13 to 5.7. Your Wheeler had the worst ERA of any of the 17 copies in the league. And your Flaherty's 5.75 was the worst of 16 copies.

That's not surprising, you were using those 3 guys in League Park, which favors LH hitters quite a bit. Mathewson and Flaherty have relatively balanced cards, but Wheeler's numbers against LHB are terrible compared to his numbers against RHB. Couple that with your average defense and it's easy to see why Wheeler was so bad. I would characterize Flaherty's performance as unlucky, although his relatively poor movement rating doesn't help you any there. Mathewson I think did pretty well for you given the ball-buster schedule you faced and your park and defense not helping him much.

Welcome to Perfect Team! You may have added an upgrade, but upgrades don't always play as well as expected. The competition is getting tougher at many levels, including Gold.

That's really helpful. I hadn't thought about the park factor. (And of course, I didn't get to it in time to change my park for this year...)

I've noticed that the Matty card just plain under-performs its ratings, particularly as a starter. This was true before the 104 and 105 cards came out, so it's not just a recent thing.

Has anyone noticed something curious about this card (and some others as well)? V right HRA is 157. PBABIP is 152. Movement is only 150. That means we're either dealing with a mistake or with yet another hidden rating that lowers overall movement. I'm guessing the latter, as this isn't the only pitcher card like this. See also Wilbur Wood and the OOTP25 Pedro.

movement has zero impact on anything: it should not even be displayed in the game

the reason why wood and mathewson stink is because their stuff is subpar, and with little babip impact more balls being in play really hurts you

Yeah, that's what I thought, too. Seems strange, though, that some pitchers have lower movement than both HRA and PBABIP. There must be some underlying calculation to explain this, unless Sporer is just plugging in a number that's meaningless anyway.
