Game crashes when I attempt to play a game

Hello everyone -

I am experiencing a problem with my game. As the topic of this thread states, the game crashes to the desktop whenever I attempt to play a game. This started occuring when I updated my Nvidia graphics card with the latest version of the studio driver. I was able to play games with no crashing involved up until this point.

I looked on the forum for help and found this link: https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...d.php?t=352824. I have followed every troubleshooting step listed there including trying to create a test league with default league settings and with the appropriate graphic settings set to minimum, but the crash still occurs.

I CAN (emphasis added), however, simulate games. Whether or not that reveals anything about what is going on, I have no idea, but I thought I'd mention it.

Anyway, I attached the file that was generated when I ran the program and attempted to play a game again with the "tracemode" option in the game's shortcut staruip properties. I wasn't sure if the files "assimp_log.txt" and "chilkat_error_log.txt" were needed to be included or not, but I thought I'd include them anyway just to be on the safe side.

Here are my pc specs:

CPU: Intel I5-14600K @ 3.5 Ghz
RAM: 32 GB (2 16 GB DDR4 1600 modules)
Video chip (system board): Intel UHD Graphics 770
Video Card: Nvidia RTX 4070
Disk: 1 TB NVRAM
OS: Windows 11 64-bit updated to version 24H2

My guess is the culprit is some bug in the updated Nvidia's driver? If I need to rollback the driver to the previous version, I don't have problem with that, but I've up until now I haven't had an issue with updating that driver with any of my games or programs, although most of the games I have installed currently are more than 20 years old.

Yeah, unfortunately you may need to roll back the driver here. One other possibility though might be to experiment with some of the 3d settings (settings > 3d). Depending on just what's wrong with the interaction with the new driver, it's possible that changing the OpenGL mode or some of the audience settings may help.

Yeah I already tried that, but thanks for the suggestion. I ended up doing a driver rollback to the previous version that was dated about a month ago andII can play games now, even with the 3D & facegen settings set to their original settings. I guess I have to wait until the next driver update or switch to using the game driver. I only stuck with the studio driver as that was what was originally installed I bought this PC custom-made.

I suppose I should consider myself fortunate because this is the first time I ever had to roll back a driver due to some graphical behavior going on, but like I said most of the games I have installed are almost 20 years old and use limited 3D graphics (if at all) something would have to be drastically wrong with the video driver (or a serious bug in the game) for them to be affected.

As far as we know the crash can occur with both variants (Studio or Game) of the Nvidia driver 572.16.

3D Enabled + NVIDIA 572 = Crash

Nvidia driver 572.16 basically can't be used with this game (and possibly FHM11). Nothing works right, if the gameplay loads at all (which OOTP doesn't).

I had to go back to a driver from July (556.12) for 3D to work. Pretty lame.

NVidia doesn't make it easy to install an old driver. It took me 3 tries... it just wouldn't remove the latest driver until I basically forced it. I guess I'll keep updating until I find the last best driver. 3 hours of messing with drivers just to play 30 mins of baseball.

I believe there's a PS5 in my future. Who has time for this crap?

There seem to be lots of threads in various gaming forums indicating that lots of games/computers are having issues with 572.16, not just OOTP.

Having this issue as well. Hopefully NVIDIA fixes it soon. Don't have time to roll back drivers.

FYI: I posted elsewhere of having the same 572.16 issues. I can confirm. I can also confirm I tried running several other grfx-intensive games and none of them are crashing to desktop for me. I've let NVIA know of the crashing with OOTP25 so hopefully it's a driver fix, if OOTP can't fix the issue with their game.

This is an OpenGL issue related to sky boxes.
We are able to reproduce it, but analyzing the OpenGL state did not show anything wrong.
We will look some more, but there is a chance that we can not fix this as it's a driver bug.

For visibilty:

Since it's only happening with 572.16+ Nvidia definitely broke something in their driver unintentionally. There is no mentioning of any OpenGL related changes in the changelog.

We already tested 572.24 which is still crashing.

It is related to the display of the skybox. Unfortunately there is no option to disable those. But you can try this:
- go to the main menu
- press "settings"
- select tab "troubleshooting"
- click on the button "open folder containing customizable data"
- an explorer window should open
- open folder "ballparks", then "models", then "misc"
- rename the folder "sky_boxes" to something else

Did you try Chris' instructions above? They should hopefully fix things temporarily.

- go to the main menu
- press "settings"
- select tab "troubleshooting"
- click on the button "open folder containing customizable data"
- an explorer window should open
- open folder "ballparks", then "models", then "misc"

Fixed my 3D issue

Hi All,

After trying all the possible solutions, nothing worked for me, so I decided to go to the NVIDIA website and look for older GameReady drivers at https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/drivers/. I found one from December 2024, version 32.0.15.6636. Once installed, the game worked just like before. No issues so far.

This seemed to have worked for me as well..... I've been messing around with troubleshooting for an hour or more already tonight and frankly do not have the energy left to play an actual game, but once I tried these steps just now I was actually able to get from the game-preview screen into the actual game itself ----- which I wasn't able to do the last 100 tried prior to implementing these steps. Sooooo, I think I'm all good. I'll confirm tomorrow when I have more energy though.

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And to provide a bit more info....

I had not booted up OOTP in a while. At the start of tonight, when I went to boot OOTP up for the first time in a while, I was running NVidia GeForce driver 572.42 and the game obviously did crash.

I rolled back to 572.16 and the game was still crashing. Which based on other posts here it sounds like it was doing that for everyone.

I then made the sky_box change while still rolled back to 572.16 and upon doing that all seemed to start working again.

I then updated the driver back to the current 572.42 version and all still seems to be working fine with the sky_box change. So the point of this post is I think as long as you make the sky_box change you can be on the current 572.42 version.

As mentioned in my previous post, I'm out of energy for the evening so I haven't played too much since making the sky-box fix, but the fact that I am actually able to get into a game now has me on the assumption that all is good.

Tomorrow I'm going to give it a heavier run and see how it goes. If you don't hear back from me, all is good =)

As for tonight though, it's time to hit the whiskey.

This worked for me on Steam with one game then it crashed again. I tried to change that folder name again and it still crashed.

Have you ever considered that the game crashes because it can't process how good you are?

/ sorry, I realize that's not helpful, it just popped in my head.
