Fielding Potential Ratings Question

I'm looking at the data available in the manage cards view in PT26, and see a few fields I want to make sure actually apply.

I noticed that there is a field that tells you whether a card is trainable or not at a given position, what their potential rating is at a given position, and then their current rating at a position.

Does this mean that if I use a card in PT at that position, it will eventually increase until the current rating is as high as the potential rating, so long as it's marked as trainable at that position?

If that's true, is it persistent for that player or that card? In other words, if you sold the card, put them in reserve or inactive, would it stay "trained?" What about across seasons?

Also, how long does it typically take?

Thanks!

They won't stay trained if you sell them. Playing them at the new position will improve the rating until it's maxed out. It doesn't take all that long. A full season as regular should definitely do the trick. Also, if the underlying ratings (range, arm, etc.) are already good then the player should outperform a low rating while he trains up. This is especially true for shortstops or center fielders moving to a less demanding position.
