Asking about opener & follower pitchers

I get that you can set relief pitchers as openers for a good matchup, and that they can be followed by your starting pitcher after that.

Does having one opener and one follower means they only exclusively open and follow for each other?

What if I have one opener & no default follower? Or one follower with no default opener?

Looks like nobody knows the answer. Suggest that you do some tests. When you learn how it works, it would be good to post it here and to the Wiki.
