The Phillies were actually worse. In terms of on-the-field performance, the number of finishes by position:
Code:
Place PHA PHI
---------------
 1st 9 2
 2nd 7 4
 3rd 3 2
 4th 4 9
 5th 6 5
 6th 3 4
 7th 4 11
 8th 18 17
---------------
Total 54 54
The Athletics won the AL pennant nine times while the Phillies won the NL pennant just twice. While the Athletics finished in last place 18 times, the Phillies finished in last place almost as many times (17) and were in seventh place nearly three times more often than the Athletics.

Directly comparing the clubs, the Athletics finished with a better winning percentage than the Phillies in 35 of the 54 seasons (65%). In aggregate: the Athletics went 3,886-4,248 .478 while the Phillies went 3,536-4,623 .433 for the period.

In terms of attendance, see the attached graph. It's an annual attendance comparison of the Athletics and Phillies, 1901-1954.

The Athletics outdrew the Phillies every year from 1902-1914 and 1921-1942. It was only after 1948 that the Athletics' fortunes declined, and the descent was quick. In total, over the 54 seasons the two clubs shared Philadelphia, the Athletics drew 25,969,393 fans while the Phillies drew 20,373,798 patrons. That's 27.5% more.

Yeah, even the Ferris Fain-Pete Suder-Eddie Joost 4th place squads of the late 40s outdrew the early years of Roberts and Ashburn. It wasn't until the Whiz Kids took the pennant in 1950 while the A's skidded to last that the attendance reversed.

(Roger Angell wrote that Ferris Fain was one of only two 1st basemen that he ever saw, pre-Keith Hernandez, who could do as Keith did and field bunts on the 3B side of the infield to get the out at third. High praise indeed.)

The Stadium is becoming a reality.

Under-seat cooling - neat.

Being a baseball fan in Philadelphia from the 1940s till the 1970s was the complete opposite of a 1950s New York baseball fan.

Say, I am wondering about the provenance of this thread because I see a number of forum members who are very familiar from my time on the OOTPB game threads but who do not usually frequent Talk Sports: rudel.dietrich, Le Grande Orange, AirmenSmith, Antonin, Pelican. I don't remember this thread, but it may have occurred during the time that I was away from Talk Sports. Or it could have been moved here.

It's always been in the Talk Sports forum. Where everyone went (or even if they are gone) IDK.

That is strange. Really, those guys do not frequent this forum. I guess they were temporarily attracted by seeing the topic in the main forum directory.

Still not as bad as approaching a non-pregnant woman with "So, how many weeks 'til the little one gets born?"

Did that once. Was doing a lab test @ a time of day when it was usually done for a pregnancy. And I told her she had to do it a certain way because of her pregnancy. The reaction & look told me I made the wrong assumption.

There are some Premier League stadiums with a whole lot less seats.

The key is premium seats. If you can get $1400 for a suite that seats ten, instead of a hundred nosebleed seats that sell twice a year, then why not?
