Leo Harrison (harris005leo)
In 1901, a player named Harrison played in one game with Washington (in DC) on September 27. Baseball Reference identifies this player as Leo J Harrison, a minor league player in the Hudson River League from 1904-1906.
Leo Harrison was born February 6, 1881 in New York. The Lynn Daily Item published a brief bio of him on April 16, 1908. The state he started playing professional baseball five years prior with the Saugerites. Newspapers from the time refer to him as Benny Harrison. From 1904-1906 he played in the Hudson River League (harris005leo). In 1907, he was with Macon for a time, showing up under the name Harris (harris001ber) until he broke a leg in April. In December, 1907, he signed with Lynn of the New England League, but he was released to New Bedford right as the 1908 season started (harris101---), and that is where he turns up - in the team photo of the 1908 New Bedford club, published in the 1909 Reach Baseball Guide. He signed with Pottsville for 1909, and with Bay City for 1910, but I'm not sure he ever played for those clubs, if he even reported in the spring. He died on July 14, 1962 in New York. So here is Leo Joseph Harrison, from 1908 with New Bedford. Chance are, however, he wasn't the outfielder with Washington in 1901. That player was described as "living somewhere in Maryland" and "hails from the Southern League". Neither sounds like a 20 year old from New York with no prior professional experience. |
