Cards in the packs

Something I've always wondered (not even sure why)...

Does anyone know when the cards in the packs are determined? Is it when we receive the packs, or when we open them?

Meaning - if we save packs and open them after new cards are released, is there a chance that a newer card will be in a pack that was acquired a month earlier?

Pack contents are generated when you open the pack. With the exception of spotlight packs where one of the six cards in the pack will be from a pre-determined list with set odds (but the other five cards are random)

Hah, I wish! No, I simply googled it. I've seen the question or an assertion to the answer one way or the other one too many times so I was finally curious enough to look it up myself.
