OK, thanks. I'll just post the evidence that you collected in Boxrec's Forum.

Just an FYI. I posted that headshot of Beattie to his Boxrec page. It came from a file I had from way back. Might have been from the Pugilistica Memorabilia website.

Cool!! I'd just got on line this evening some and seen your note! I see they combined under the Babe Beattie spellage. I hope/wish I can run across something on line to give any indication how/why many articles I"m running across looking through the Gauvin records in 1936-37 you see Babe Beatty. There's two fights between Gauvin and Beatty in early 1937, not on the Babe Beattie list of fights. An interesting mystery to keep looking at!

Nice! Thanks Cap. Yep that's the Al McCoy (Florand Lebrasseur) fight in 1932, Oct 2nd. Beattie flagged as from St Pierre de Broughton, (Birthplace as BoxRec shows?) Once I get done with Gauvin, who I want to finish it will be interesting to dig back into Beattie / Beatty. Really got me side tracked but this is the really interesting kind of stuff to be able to dig up about the boxers of the long ago bygone days.

Going forwards in months 1937 for Jumbo Gauvin and came across this article about a fight Babe Beattie against a Leo Asselin. First thing of note this fight is not in the BoxRec data list for Beattie. Second thing you'll see in the article it talks about Beatties two fights with Jumbo Gauvin. The newspaper articles discussing those Gauvin fights spelled Babe's name Beatty! So some more proof verifying Beattie and Beatty were the same fighter. Once I finish Gauvin I'll go back to Beattie/Beatty and see what other fights I find for him and maybe some info on why the two different name spellings. This article is from the Newport Daily Express dated Fri, Jul 30 1937.

Rocco if you give me the exact location of the fight (Was it in Newport, Rhode Island?) and other details I can enter it and any others into Beattie's Boxrec record. I've just added the July 30 and Nov 28 fights to Gauvin's record. Did he fight twice on February 26, 1938?

Sat, Dec 26, 1936, Star Weekly, Toronto, Canada - An article mentioning Oliver Shanks in part of the contect of it mentions Shanks having knocked out Jumbo Gauvin in two rounds at Burlington Vt. Does not mention any date. Only record of any kind found for the BoxRec entry of Jumbo Gauvin vs Oliver Shanks fight dated 10/3/36 at Burlington.

Found in some online newspapers is an account of a fight Gauvin had with Babe Beatty.

Tue, Feb 16, 1937 and Sat Feb 20, 1937, The Newport Daily Express, VT - Jumbo Gauvin "of Orleans" this article states presenting the fight to be coming up on Newport boxing promoter Dave Sisco's upcoming fight show. Jumbo Gauvin is presented as the heavyweight champ of Vermont. Says that Gauvin and Babe Beatty who Gauvin is to fight are two of the very popular boxers in the area. The article on the 16th states Gauvin "of Fort Ethan Allen".

Fri, Feb 26, 1937, The Caledonian-Record, St. Johnsbury, VT - Light heavyweight champion Babe Beatty stopped Jumbo Gauvin in the 4th round of a scheduled 10 rounder. At the outset of the fight, Beatty showed being aggressively cautious but the better boxer. Beatty trailed Gauvin of Fort Ethan Allen about the ring staying clear of a fast left that Gauvin would deliver on occasion. Beatty kept up the same tactics in the second outpointing Gauvin. The third round was pretty even, but then in the fourth, Beatty delivered a right hook to Gauvin's jaw that left him groggy. As Gauvin wondered over to the opposit corner, Beatty planted another. Leaning back clutching the top rope, Gauvin left himself open to lefts and rights from Beatty and eventually he dropped to the canvas in a puddle of blood from his nose.

Fri, Apr 16, 1937, The Caledonian-Record, St. Jouhnsbury, VT - It what was being billed a "grudge" rematch fight between Jumbo Gauvin, 190 lbs and Babe Beatty, 170 lbs that might go the distance at the state Armory Thursday night. About 1200-1500 fight fans through were shocked by the sudden and dramatic end of the fight in only 1 min - 43 seconds! At the start of the bell, Gauvin quickly lumbered in to the Beatty. "Beaty got in a pair of light lefts before Gauvin started his haymakers", but Beatty was able to duck under the wild swings. Then the unexpected happened when Beatty's left caught Gauvin in his windpipe that was reported sore before the fight from thier previous bout. Gauvin went down for a count of nine just twenty eight seconds after the opening bell. Gauvin made it up, but Beatty forced Gauvin into a corner and jabed the left into the neck two or three more times. A right then caught Jumbo's jaw and he went down near the ropes. Before the count was up, Gauvin told his seconds that he was unable to continue.
Are we sure about the highlighted dates above? Apparently Babe Beattie was fighting a Bill Ferguson on February 26, 1937 (According to Boxrec and Matt Tegan) Beattie was fighting the same Bill Ferguson of Maine in Maine on April 22nd, 1937.

Sorry Cap I missed this message. I see where you entered the fights on Gauvin's record. Which fight are you asking for it's location?

Thanks, Cap! Intersting to see these old fights uncovered. Jumbo Gauvin sees to have a lot more fights under his belt too.

Edit: Oh, I see, you updated his profile already. Nice!

Continuing Jumbo Gauvin career search.....

Going through to double check the fight entries I've found and see what Gauvin's record accumulates to. Discovered a new fight very early in his career along with a great photo of him in a 1935 Bio Article of sorts very early in his career. This article I found searching Ernest Gauvin. I think this article helps to validate his approximate date of birth in 1913 and place of birth as Springfield, Mass it stating he was age 14 when starting to work for a company in his home town. I also found an early fight record looking for his opponent and found the article spelling Gauvin's name as Kayo Gouval??!! So I'm learning that it takes trying different possible spellings of a name or search their opponent name to find fight records in these old newspapers. Here is a bit of that bio article in late 1935 on Gauvin that included a real nice photo, attaching a close up to use in the game and the full photo.
Thur Dec 26, 1935 The Burlington Free Press in a pretty lengthly bio, gives Ernest F. Gauvin (first time seen full name) age as 22, a Pvt. in the Army at Fort Ethan Allen with the Battery "D" Seventh Artillery. Gives his height at 6 ft and weight at the time at 196, 34 inch waist and 43 inch chest. It mentions here Gauvin having won each of his three local fights by knockout over Leo Paul, Butch Barkan and Jim Willoby. Wood chopping he did which developed the size and strength in his back and arms, good for boxing. At age 14 he started working in a cold storage room for a company in his home town of Springfield, Mass. After two years of that he turned to truck driving, then in the winter of 1929 he went north to try out wood chopping. His growing talents in wood cutting, led him into the 191st Civilian Conservation Corps where he won the State Wood chopping championship in 1934. This was in Vermont. Later he won the New England championship against a large field at Mechanics hall in Boston. Fighting first interested Gauvin during his time with the C.C.C. at Waterbury, Vt. The article describes Gauvin as "fast on his feet and carrying a bone crushing pumpch in either hand." Gauving left the C.C.C and enlisted at Fort Ethan Allen. No date given for when he joined.
Assuming the age of 22 at the time of this Bio article in late December 1935, it would put his date of birth sometime in 1913.

Weird. I've been trying to enter new bouts for Gauvin, but Boxrec won't let me. Must be some bug in the system today, because it worked a charm yesterday.

(Tried to add a photo just now and got a message the site is undergoing maintenance.)
