CHICAGO, BROOKLYN, IN A 1 FOR 1 DEAL
BNN has learned the Chicago Iron Pigs have reportedly worked out a deal with the Brooklyn Islanders. Sources close to the Iron Pigs indicated that a trade has been reached in principle where 27-year-old RHP Matt Sainsbury will be swapped to Chicago with 25-year-old LF Jason Merchen heading to Brooklyn. Neither organization would comment on the report, saying it was club policy not to speak about a trade until it was finalized.

In 11 games this season, Merchen is batting .231 with 9 hits and 1 home run. He has scored 7 runs and driven in 5. He was acquired just two weeks ago from Portland.

In 12 starts this season, Sainsbury has notched a 5-3 record and a 3.03 ERA.

BACKROOM CHATTER
If you allow this to last even a minute it opens flood gates to unwanted and harmful personal behavior. Merchen is everything you could want in a 25 year old baseball player, physically. Still not done growing he's an elite bat with elite legs and a ++ defender. Our scouts rate him 2.5* now but a 4* player down the road. Gus Garcia, is, well he's Gus Garcia. A player who is pretty much the captain of this team and who never takes a pitch off. For him to go public meant to me that everything that could be done privately, was.
  • But the solution is not a 5-day suspension. It's also not deal a potential star for a bag of balls just to rid the clubhouse of his toxicity.
  • Matt Sainsbury is a 27 year old legit #3 whose still maturing. He's 46-54 4.31 lifetime with Brooklyn over 157 starts, 889 IP 865 K's to 275 BB and 916 H. He's also suffering from a severe blister at the moment. He's 5-3 3.03 this year in 12 starts.
  • He will head to the IL and we'll sort out the rest when need be.
  • For now Matt Chiquete is called up as our 4th outfielder.

NIEVES JOINS THE 3 HOME RUN CLUB
Jose Nieves went yard three times in a Chicago Iron Pigs victory over the Oklahoma City Tornado at Iron Pigs Field.

"I was in a groove," he said. "Every pitch they tossed up there looked like a grapefruit."

For the day, the Chicago second baseman went 3-for-4 against Oklahoma City with 5 RBIs and 3 runs scored in a brilliant display of power hitting that led the Iron Pigs to the 12-0 win.

"I tell you what. I'm shocked because I didn't think that last ball had enough to get out," he told BNN reporters in the clubhouse following the game. "I thought it was just going to be a long out."

Jose Nieves hit a two-run home run off Vic Martinez in the 2nd, flied out in the 4th, hit a two-run home run off Josh Rideout in the 5th and hit a solo-shot off Corey Stitt in the 7th.

Nieves on the season is hitting .223 with 12 home runs. His stats include 32 RBIs and 35 runs scored. He entered June with a .194/.253/.366 slash line and has raised his average to .223 with a .305/.382/.729 slash line and 7 HR with 14 RBI's in 15 starts.

IRON PIG NEWS
  • Matt Sainsbury is due off the IL on Monday. He will head to New Orleans and get 2-3 starts before we decide on how to work this. Right now he either supplants Bush (2-6 5.40) or Avendano (3-8 4.63) in the rotation or we extend the rotation to 6.
  • He does have a history of health issues so there's that.
  • We enter the halfway point of the season with the offense clearly having shaken off the early-season fog, the rotation starting to hit its stride, and the defense coming together. Jose Nieves streak has coincided with and assisted on this outstanding run we are on.
  • Short Season Nashville and Rookie League Minneapolis kick off their seasons Tuesday.
Here is a look at the rosters/prospects for both:
NASHVILLE
  • Top pick Mike Harper (19 5*) opened up at Albuquerque but it was clearly too early. 1-5 7.71 with 28 BB and 27 K's in 32.2 IP so he'll head up the Nashville rotation. At 19 it might have been too much too soon. 21 year old Mario Correa (3.5*) 2015 draftee Ruben Alcala (3*) and 20 year old Jake Ray (2.5*) have rotation spots along with free-agent Luke Benes (20 2*).
  • The bullpen is headed by 2015 5th rounder Jerry Bryant (19 4*).
  • On offense 2 4.5* prospects start their careers in IF Javier Herrera (18 2nd round 49th overall) and 1st round pick (37th overall) Campbell Hoyles (18).
MINNEAPOLIS
  • Recently signed Richard Cabales (18 3.5*) and 2014 12th round pick Josh Miller (19 3*) are joined by 2015 6th rounder (205th overall) Nate Corbett (18 2.5*).
  • The bullpen will be led by Manny Rodriguez (19 4*) a 2013 international free agent sign.
  • On offense 2015 top pick Josh Buening (18 5*) and 7th round pick C Francisco Regalado (18 4*) will pace the hitters with 3* prospects Ryan Carpenter (18 1B) and OF Victor Analco (19) a 2013 International free agent signing.

IRON PIGS MONTH IN REVIEW
  • Blake Reynolds (AA) went 5-1 2.70 to win AA Pitcher of the month. Reynolds was a 16th round pick in the 2011 draft.
  • Edwin Mejia (A) hit .369-8-27 to win Class A Player of the month. Edwin was the 9th round pick in 2012.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH- Bill Brumfield .297/.402/.622 9 HR 32 RBI
PITCHER OF THE MONTH- Alberto Merera 5-0 3.18
MINOR LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE MONTH- TIE
Edwin Mejia (A) .369/.430/.750 8 HR 27 RBI 20 R
Fernando Aviles (AA) .380/.463/.732 6 HR 19 RBI 21 R
MINOR LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE MONTH- Nick Terrell (AAA) 4-0 2.27 35.2 IP 26 K 0.95 WHIP

4 regulars with OPS of over 1.000 seems like a winning formula. The offense has clearly found its stride and Merera and Sandberg (who was 1 start from being taken out of the rotation) combined to go 9-0 in 11 starts. Bush with a .346 BABIP tells me that while he may have been bad, he wasn't that bad. Guinn's month is a bit worrisome.

ALL STAR BREAK

IRON PIG NEWS
You can't always get what you want, but sometimes you find a deal anyway. The Baseball News Network is reporting that Chicago and Oklahoma City have made a swap with 24-year old minor league RF Daniel Perez, 22-year old minor league 2B Enrique Garza, 23-year old minor league LHP Augusto Campos, 26-year old minor league RHP Sergio Zapata, and a 3rd round draft pick being shipped to the Tornado and in return the Iron Pigs would get 25-year old LHP Drew Bruen and a 2nd round draft pick.

Chicago general manager Curt Schilling said the two sides were close to a blockbuster trade before agreeing upon a smaller-scale transaction.

"This is just a bit of housekeeping compared to what we wanted to do," he said. "I won't name names, but the potential deal we were close to making would have certainly grabbed some headlines."

A source inside the Chicago organization said the two sides might not be done dealing, and another transaction could be in the works.

Thus far this year, Perez is batting .239 with 3 home runs, 7 RBIs and 7 runs scored.

In 15 starts this season, Bruen has chalked up a 7-4 record and a 4.71 ERA.

BACKROOM CHATTER
Bruen is a starter in the long run. For now he'll take a spot in the bullpen and Aaron Prochaska will be optioned to New Orleans. This trade was far more about opening up some room in the high minors for IP and AB's. Perez was very good in limited time last year (.258-12-37) but we have a back-loaded organization when it comes to RHH outfielders.
The pick swap was a nice add.
Also on Sunday, we claimed RH Jonathan Montoya from Pittsburgh. The 24 year old is another power arm for the bullpen, and with options left he's sent to AAA.

LEAGUE HIGHLIGHTS
AL POTW-
When it came to hitting the baseball, Mike LaFountain had few peers in the American League this past week.
The talented left fielder for San Jose tagged opposing pitchers for a .519 average and was voted the Player of the Week Award. Included in his stats were 14 hits in 27 at-bats, 5 homers, 9 runs scored and 9 RBIs.
LaFountain is hitting .246 this year with 16 home runs, 63 RBIs and 56 runs scored. He has 109 hits in 443 at-bats, 27 walks and a .290 on-base percentage. LaFountain has played in 119 games.
NL POTW- Chicago fans have something to crow about today as Chicago center fielder Rico Guzman nabbed the National League Player of the Week Award for his performance over the last seven days.
"I know there are times when it's hard to lay off pitches. Everyone goes through stretches when he's too eager to put the ball in play. You know, though, I feel like this past week I was able to get in the right frame of mind and just let things come naturally," said Guzman.
He posted a .500 average (13-for-26) this past week with 3 home runs, 8 RBIs, and 12 runs scored.
For the season, Guzman has hit .312 with 15 home runs and 77 RBIs. He has played in 114 games and scored 98 times.

  • Derek Dames has a strained rib cage that looks to be a 1-2 week thing. He isn't asking for the IL, he wants to play, but the safe play is to not push it. The bigger question is do we insert Deal or Pedraza at SS and call up another IF or summon prospect AJ Lanigan from AA where he is tearing it up (.282/.368/.466)? he's ready, and the best defender of the 3.
  • The decision is to give Pedraza the AB's, add, and call up, SS Carlos Davila from New Orleans and promote Lanigan to New Orleans.
  • Carlos Davia is a 26 year old ++ defender up the middle. Nothing fancy with the bat, decent wheels but a dirt dog who plays all out. He's the best defensive 2B in the organization. He was a minor league FA signing back in our first year of existence. A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, he's a RHH as well. He'll get some starts vs LHP.

  • Both guys are not needing the IL but both are about a week or so from being ok. I''ll hold off on Sainsbury but with a 15 game lead I am going to put Guzman on the IL. This is a great opportunity to see our organization's depth.
  • John Tite will be recalled. Tite, who's calling card is power, is hitting .280/.372/.549 with 22 HR and 57 RBI at New Orleans and had a super September last year when called up (.302/.348/.558 3 HR 7 RBI). Matt Chiquete will take over in CF.
  • In a remarkable performance, San Diego Missions starter Juan Laurel beat the Los Angeles Storm, 6-0, in an impressive 6-hit shutout. "My arm felt good, mechanics were good and my stuff was working," he said later. "It doesn't get any better than this." The Missions hurler finished with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk. He showed pinpoint control and a sharp fastball. "It was a rough one for my guys," Los Angeles manager Edwin Perez said, following the game. "We weren't at our best and their guy was."

"McMillion was good but he wasn't flawless," San Diego manager Bob O'Halloran said. "We had a few opportunities to make something happen and we didn't do it. Not to take anything away from Fresno, but this is on us." So far this year, McMillion has a 12-12 record with a 3.55 ERA.

LEAGUE HIGHLIGHTS
AL POTW- Kenny Andrew has the tools to stick in this league for many years. The 24-year-old first baseman of the Columbus Black Knights had a hot bat in the American League over the past seven days and won the Player of the Week honors.
Andrew batted .565 with 13 hits in 23 at-bats, 3 home runs and 7 RBIs.
This season, Andrew has posted a batting average of .345 with 164 hits in 475 at-bats, 45 home runs and 103 RBIs. He has also scored 100 runs, walked 93 times and compiled a .454 OBP.
NL POTW- Ricky Ramirez of the Jacksonville Panthers has just enjoyed one of the better weeks of his career. That fact was not lost on National League officials, who named him Player of the Week.
Ramirez logged a .417 batting average for the Jacksonville Panthers, racking up 11 RBIs and 3 home runs.
So far this season, Ramirez is batting .272 with 27 home runs, 79 RBIs and 81 runs scored. He has 120 hits in 441 at-bats, 85 walks and a .389 OBP. Ramirez has played in 123 games.
  • Jim Bruckner of the Wyoming Cowboys pitched his way into the exclusive 300-save club today at Racersdome by saving the 3-2 victory over the Dallas Drillers. In his historic outing, he surrendered no runs and no hits in 1 innings. "Yeah, it can be a stressful job sometimes," the 31-year-old Bruckner told reporters after the game. "But there's a thrill that comes with being out there in a big situation every time. Hopefully I can close out a few more before I call it a career." Bruckner has notched 300 saves during his career.
  • The latest out of Washington indicates that Nick Grieshop has re-signed with the Jets and that the 30-year-old starting pitcher is set to earn $54,000,000 over a 6-year span. Team officials tell BNN the deal will be officially announced at a press conference tomorrow. This year, Grieshop has compiled a 11-6 mark with a 2.75 ERA in 27 starts. Nick was acquired from OKC in a January deal and is 109-99 3.64 over 328 G and 265 GS. He was the 2nd overall pick in the 2003 Draft out of Rochester HS in Washington.

IRON PIG NEWS
  • Dan Williams was dynamite at Tarpons Stadium, blowing away the Deering Counts in a shutout victory. The Milwaukee Hawks (AA) starter had everything working as he held the Counts to 2 hits in the 5-0 win. "He was pure nasty out there today," said Deering skipper Gabe Davidson. "I don't think any team in the league would've had a chance against what he was bringing." Williams finished the game with 7 strikeouts and no walks. This year, Williams has registered 4 wins and 3 losses in 10 starts with a 5.06 ERA while registering 44 strikeouts and 24 walks in 64 innings. Williams was Chicago's 3rd round pick in 2011 (86th overall).
  • On Thursday Knuckleballer Jonathan Bailey (A) tossed a CG allowing 8 hits and fanning 2 in a 7-2 win. He's 8-8 4.61.

  • Tim Bilinsky led the Indianapolis Lynx to a shutout victory, 1-0, over the Los Angeles Storm at Red Hawks Park. "My pitching coach told me before the game just to bear down and focus," Bilinsky recalled later. "He said no one was going to hit me if I'm throwing a good breaking ball with good location." Bilinsky yielded 6 hits and had 4 strikeouts and 1 walk in the standout performance. "I thought he put the ball where he wanted to," Los Angeles manager Edwin Perez said. "And that's just about the whole secret to pitching." This year, Bilinsky has worked 174.2 innings with 119 strikeouts en route to a 8-10 record and 4.43 ERA.

When I do that, good things happen." On his stats sheet this season, Mull shows a 11-10 record, 29 starts, 189.2 innings, 93 strikeouts and a 3.70 ERA.

LEAGUE HIGHLIGHTS
AL POTW- Pitchers who faced the Columbus Black Knights last week were happy to see Kenny Andrew in the rear-view mirror. The 24-year-old first baseman was dubbed the American League Player of the Week for a 6-game tear that saw him hit at a .417 clip.
For the week he also chalked up 10 hits in 24 at-bats, 5 home runs, 6 RBIs and 6 runs scored.
This year, Andrew has hit at a .349 pace and produced 109 RBIs, 50 home runs and scored 106 runs.
NL POTW- Bryan Bernhardt has been in a real groove lately. The 23-year-old Oklahoma City Tornado catcher nabbed National League Player of the Week honors today after beating up on opposing pitchers all last week. Bernhardt's hot streak featured 9 hits in 16 at-bats, 2 home runs, 10 RBIs, 5 runs scored and a .562 average.
This year, Bernhardt is hitting .274 with 17 home runs.
