1994 Philadelphia Phillies

This one-season dynasty will follow the 1994 Philadelphia Phillies as they attempt to build on their success of the previous year. The 1993 club unexpectedly went from worst to first, making the World Series with an entertaining and scruffy cast of characters. In this universe, the players' strike does not occur and teams will play the full 162 games.

The 1994 Phillies return a fairly similar club to the 1993 pennant winners. The offseason is led by Lenny Dykstra, Darren Daulton, Dave Hollins and John Kruk, with Kevin Stocker holding down shortstop, and platoons at second base and both outfield corners. The major difference in the rotation is the departure of Terry Mulholland, who was shipped off to the Yankees in exchange for three younger players. Curt Schilling, Danny Jackson, Tommy Greene and Ben Rivera are all holdovers from last year. In the bullpen, soft-tossing closer Doug Jones was acquired for Mitch Williams, who was shipped out after giving up the series-clinching home run to Toronto. Setup men Larry Andersen and David West return, and reliever Heathcliff Slocumb was acquired for outfielder and future GM Ruben Amaro Jr.

I'll play out each game and will summarize the games each week. I'll try to manage somewhat realistically for the area and not make outrageous trades.

The Phillies wind up the first week with a 4-2 record, sweeping the Rockies and dropping a series to the Reds.

April 4: Phillies 6, Rockies 5. The Phils took the season opener in a game that was closer than it should have been. Kevin Stocker helped the club get on the board first with a sac fly in the fourth, then Darren Daulton doubled in two in the fifth. After the lead was extended to 6-0, the Rockies scored a run against Curt Schilling in the seventh, then got a three-run homer from Dante Bichette the next inning. The Rockies got three hits against Doug Jones in the ninth, cutting the deficit to a single run, but Jim Eisenreich threw out Ellis Burks trying to advance to third base to end the game.

April 6: Phillies 9, Rockies 6. Once again, the Phillies took an early lead before frittering it away. Dave Hollins and Daulton hit back-to-back homers in the second inning, and the Phillies tacked on three soon after to go up 5-0. But Andres Galarraga blasted a grand slam off Danny Jackson, and the Rockies followed up with two more runs to take the lead in the fifth. A two-run pinch-hit double by Wes Chamberlain helped the Phillies retake the lead in the eighth, and the Phils tacked on two more in the ninth.

April 7: Phillies 14, Rockies 12. Surely a ten-run lead would be safe, right? Not in Colorado... By the end of their time up in the third inning, the Phillies had 10 runs and 11 hits. All of that evaporated within the next two innings, as Danny Jackson and Heathcliff Slocumb allowed five runs apiece. A two-run double by Pete Incaviglia was followed by a two-run homer by Eisenreich as the Phillies took the lead for good in the sixth. Jones held on for his third save in three games.

April 8: Reds 3, Phillies 2. The Phillies took a 2-0 lead, but the Reds scored two in the fifth to tie it. The exhausted Philadelphia bullpen held up for a while, but Tony Fernandez singled home the game-winner off Slocumb in the tenth.

April 9: Reds 6, Phillies 2. Erik Hanson struck out nine in 8 1/3 innings, shutting down the Phils' offense. Jeff Juden took the loss in his first start as a Phillie.

April 10: Phillies 10, Reds 7. It's never easy in Philadelphia... The Phillies took a 3-0 lead, but the Reds came back with a couple runs in the fourth and then went ahead in the fifth on a three-run homer by Kevin Mitchell. Backup catcher Todd Pratt matched that feat in the sixth for the Phils, and four more runs in the next couple innings gave the club a 10-6 lead. David West, Slocumb and Jones gritted through the final three frames to complete a winning (but stressful) week.

The Phillies took five out of six on the week and currently are tired for the best record in the National League, at 9-3. Darren Daulton had ten hits (three home runs) and won the Player of the Week in the NL.

April 11: Phillies 4, Rockies 0. Danny Jackson threw eight shutout innings, striking out five and allowing just four hits. Rookie Toby Borland entered in the ninth after Jackson got into trouble and picked up the last three outs on just five pitches. Jim Eisenreich hit a two-run homer for the Phils.

April 13: Phillies 7, Rockies 3. Darren Daulton’s two-run double helped the Phillies took an early lead that they didn’t relinquish. Tommy Greene gutted through six innings, and Larry Andersen and Heathcliff Slocumb threw scoreless relief outings.

April 14: Phillies 6, Rockies 1. Ben Rivera was outstanding, allowing just one run in 6 2/3 innings, with David West and Borland taking Philadelphia the rest of the way for their second straight sweep against Colorado. Daulton and Kevin Stocker homered, and Mickey Morandini picked up three hits.

April 15: Phillies 10, Reds 6. Daulton homered twice and drove in four runs as the Phillies collected 12 hits in total, with three apiece from Daulton and Lenny Dykstra. Once again, the back end of the bullpen was solid, with Andersen and Doug Jones each pitching scoreless innings.

April 16: Reds 9, Phillies 5. Kevin Mitchell blasted three home runs to snap a five-game Philadelphia winning streak. Curt Schilling had a rough outing, giving up seven runs in four innings.

April 17: Phillies 5, Reds 1. Jackson was terrific once again, allowing just a solo homer in eight innings to pick up his second straight win. Pete Incaviglia drove in two runs with a first-inning single.

The Phillies alternated losses and wins, finishing the week 3-4, and now are 12-7 overall. We made a minor trade to shore up the bullpen, acquiring reliever Randy St. Claire in exchange for a minor leaguer.

April 18: Dodgers 5, Phillies 1. Ramon Martinez held the Phillies to a single run over eight innings to get the win. Tim Wallach picked up two extra-base hits off Tommy Greene, who took the loss.

April 19: Phillies 6, Dodgers 3. A trio of two-run innings helps the Phillies to victory. Darren Daulton walked three times and scored three runs. Ben Revere pitched six innings for the win, and Larry Andersen, David West and Doug Jones threw scoreless frames to close it out.

April 20: Giants 8, Phillies 6. Starters Jeff Juden and John Burkett were both chased early, with the Giants knotting it at six apiece in the fourth. With the bullpen exhausted, Barry Bonds hit his league-leading ninth home run of the season in the eighth inning off Toby Borland to lead the Giants to the win.

April 21: Phillies 8, Giants 4. Curt Schilling pitched eight innings and hit a home run himself en route to the victory. Kevin Stocker and Ricky Jordan both homered as well as the Phillies doubled up the Giants.

April 22: Padres 3, Phillies 1. Danny Jackson was effective, allowing two unearned runs over seven innings, but the offense could only put up one run off Padres starter Scott Sanders. First baseman Eddie Williams had three hits for San Diego.

April 23: Phillies 5, Padres 2. Darren Daulton and Lenny Dykstra each had three hits, with Daulton hitting his sixth home run of the season. Tommy Greene went seven innings for the win, and West and Jones finished things up.

April 24: Padres 14, Phillies 4. The Phillies played their worst game of the season, committing five errors, allowing eight walks and two wild pitches, and hitting a batter. Ben Rivera, Borland and St. Claire were the main offenders.

The Phillies went 4-1 on the week and are now at 16-8 overall, the best record in the National League.

April 26: Dodgers 3, Phillies 0. Former Phillie Kevin Gross was masterful over eight innings for the Dodgers. Curt Schilling gave up two homers and took the loss.

April 27: Phillies 3, Dodgers 1. Three first-inning runs were all the Phils needed in this one. Danny Jackson gutted through six innings, and Larry Andersen and Doug Jones took things the rest of the way.

April 29: Phillies 4, Giants 3. Darren Lewis hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to give the Giants the lead, but Ricky Jordan and John Kruk homered in the bottom of the inning to go back in front. David West got the win, and Jones picked up his eighth save on just three pitches.

April 30: Phillies 6, Giants 2. Home runs by Milt Thompson and Lenny Dykstra helped the Phillies to a bit of an easier win. Ben Rivera threw eight solid innings to collect his third win of the season.

May 1: Phillies 6, Giants 5. The Phillies went up 5-0 and were cruising, with Curt Schilling throwing six no-hit innings before giving up two homers in the seventh. Two errors by Kevin Stocker allowed the Giants to tie it in the ninth, but the Phils came right back with a walk-off single by Kruk in the bottom of the inning to extend the winning streak to four games.

Some notable stats from the first month of the season:
-Darren Daulton has been on fire, with a .370 average, six home runs, 20 RBI and 1.6 WAR, third-best in the league.
-Dykstra leads the league with 11 stolen bases.
-Jackson (1.06) and Rivera (2.03) rank first and second in the league in ERA.
-Jones is tied for the league lead with eight saves.
-The Phillies offense has been the best in the league overall so far.

A rough week for the Phillies (2-5) drops them to 18-13, which is still good for first place in the NL East.

May 2: Padres 6, Phillies 1. Eddie Williams had three hits and drove in five runs in the Padres win. Sloppy defense doomed the Phillies again, as they committed four errors in the loss.

May 3: Padres 8, Phillies 4. The Padres took a 6-0 lead early and never looked back. Bobby Munoz returned to the major league roster and took the loss, making it through only three innings.

May 4: Padres 2, Phillies 1. Tommy Greene pitched six scoreless innings, but Toby Borland immediately allowed a game-tying homer in the seventh, followed by the go-ahead run. The Phillies had 15 baserunners, but only scored once.

May 5: Marlins 4, Phillies 1. Chris Hammond shut down the Phillies this time, allowing one run in eight innings. The Marlins put up four against Ben Rivera to extend the Philadelphia losing streak to four games.

May 6: Phillies 8, Marlins 6. Curt Schilling gave up six runs in just three innings, and it looked like the Phillies were on their way to another defeat before the offense finally came alive. Dave Hollins' two-run single in the eighth inning put the team ahead, and the bullpen managed six scoreless frames.

May 7: Phillies 4, Marlins 3. Jim Eisenreich and Wes Chamberlain drove in runs in the eighth inning to help the Phillies come from behind. Danny Jackson got his fourth win, and Doug Jones his tenth save.

May 8: Marlins 10, Phillies 2. Munoz was pummeled once again, allowing seven runs in four innings. Terry Matthews pitched a complete game for Florida, allowing two runs.

Munoz was returned to the minors after the game; Bob Gaddy joined the team as a long reliever, with Jeff Juden likely to return to the rotation to replace Munoz in a few days.

Another bad week, as the Phillies lost five of seven to fall to 20-18, a game and a half behind the Braves in the NL East.

May 9: Braves 6, Phillies 1. Greg Maddux did Greg Maddux things, holding the Phillies to one run and six hits and striking out ten in a complete game. Tommy Greene took the loss.

May 10: Braves 7, Phillies 5. The Braves put up six runs on Ben Rivera, including a grand slam by Deion Sanders. The Phils had five extra-base hits, but couldn't rally agains the Atlanta bullpen.

May 11: Braves 8, Phillies 6. Curt Schilling had another rough outing as the Braves swept the series. An eighth-inning rally off Larry Andersen sealed things for Atlanta as the Philadelphia bats picked up plenty of hits (14 in total) but couldn't string together enough runs.

May 12: Pirates 4, Phillies 2. The Pirates ran the Phillies' losing streak to five games, as Randy Tomlin went to 5-0. Adding injury to insult, Danny Jackson left with a sore shoulder and Dave Hollins with a broken knee; Jackson should return next week, but Hollins will miss the rest of the season.

May 13: Phillies 8, Pirates 2. The Phillies finally got back into the win column, with Lenny Dykstra reaching base five times. Jeff Juden returned from the minors to pick up the victory.

May 14: Pirates 9, Phillies 2. Tommy Greene was blitzed by the Pittsburgh bats, allowing eight runs in 3 2/3 innings. Darren Daulton had three hits by Philly could put up just two runs against Paul Wagner.

May 15: Phillies 4, Pirates 3 (11 innings). This was a nice comeback win, as the Pirates went ahead 3-0 but the Phillies tied the score in the ninth on a single by John Kruk. Backup third baseman Tom Quinlan won the game two innings later with a single.

With the rotation struggling, Roger Mason (who was DFA'd a week before) was traded for 46-year-old knuckleballer Charlie Hough, who isn't great but should provide some innings. Mariano Duncan shifts to third base to replace Hollins, with minor league journeyman Drew Gilbert coming up to as an infield reserve. Randy Ready was signed to a minor-league deal, and I have my eye on Kevin Seitzer as a potential long term solution at third base if Duncan doesn't work out.

Things took a better turn this week, with the Phillies taking four of six (though both the losses were blowouts) and improving to 24-20.

May 16: Expos 14, Phillies 5. Curt Schilling gave up two first-inning runs, but the Phillies came back to take the lead with four of their own. It didn't last, as the bullpen was obliterated for ten runs in three innings. The Expos hit five home runs in total.

May 17: Phillies 4, Expos 2. Charlie Hough was effective in his first start with Philadelphia, allowing two runs in 6 1/3 innings. The late-game troika of David West, Larry Andersen and Doug Jones held the Expos scoreless the rest of the way. Ricky Jordan's two-run homer was the big hit for the Phils.

May 18: Phillies 5, Expos 2. Jordan homered again, this time as a pinch hitter, and Pete Incaviglia hit one as well to pace the Phillies' offense. Jeff Juden was effective over five innings, and the bullpen had another good day.

May 20: Phillies 6, Mets 2. The Phillies struck early, with three runs in the first, and Lenny Dykstra extended the lead with a homer in the second. Tommy Greene gutted through five innings, and yet again, the bullpen held the opposition scoreless the rest of the way.

May 21: Phillies 7, Mets 6 (11 innings). This was an impressive comeback win for the Phillies. Down 5-1 after the top of the fifth, with Curt Schilling getting hit hard once again, the Phils tied it up with four of their own in the bottom of the inning. After trading late-inning runs, an exhausted bullpen carried the club into extras. Jim Eisenreich hit a single to end it.

May 22: Mets 7, Phillies 0. Bobby Jones held the Phillies to just two hits, throwing 139 pitches in the process. Hough took the loss, with Todd Hundley and Bobby Bonilla hitting homers for the Mets.

Danny Jackson's recovery took longer than expected, so he went to the IL and Bobby Munoz was recalled to replace him in the rotation.
