Still Receiving Error Messages After Autosave Trick

First, let me preface by saying I realize I could have avoided all of this by doing a proper backup, so I am not asking for sympathy here.

My save file got corrupted, I followed the recommended steps for resolving the corruption through the autosave feature

but I continued to receive the message below:

"An error occurred while loading the database! Could not load players file"

After hitting OK, the next screen says "a problem occurred while loading the league file. Click OK to save the current files in a folder named 'incident' inside your league folder now and let OOTP try to restore your game to the state of the last previous successful save."

After clicking OK, it says it restored the autosave files (presumably, the uncorrupted files in the autosave folder). It starts loading as normal, then the same error message appears again:

""An error occurred while loading the database! Could not load players file"

The final message states "The loading of the database failed. It is either corrupt or from a save game from an old version"

I followed the steps of the guide above, but it continues to give me this load players message, even though there is a players file. Is there a step I am missing that is preventing restoration? Or, is it beyond repair?
