2017 Global Assembly of Champions
The 2017 Global Assembly of Champions (GAC) expanded to a seven-team field. The opening round consisted of a 12-game schedule over 14 days to determine the bracket seeds, with the top six teams advancing.
The Hill Country Skyhawks started the tournament on a 7-0 tear. By the end of the round, the Bengaluru Royal Challengers and the Hill Country Skyhawks both finished 9-3 to earn the top two seeds and a first-round bye. The Mumbai Directors hosted the Washington Grays, while the defending champion Hyderabad Pearls hosted the Shanghai Ossen Red Eagles (SORE). Hyderabad Pearls vs. Shanghai Ossen Red Eagles: The Pearls started with an 110 blowout in Game 1. Janakiraman Ogale led the way with 2 homers, 6 RBI, and 3 runs. After a 72 Hyderabad win in Game 2, the series moved to Shanghai. In Game 3, Zi-jun Teoh hit a solo home run in the 8th to give Shanghai a 10 win. Rio Douthwaite followed that with 6.2 innings of 1-hit ball to win Game 4 40 and tie the series. In Game 5, Bat-Tuy Ma hit two 2-run homers, and Majid Lodhi went 4-for-5 with 7 RBI, including a walk-off 3-run home run to give Shanghai a 75 win and a 32 series lead. However, Hyderabad fought back. Jivana Vidyashanker had 5 RBI and Chung Ou pitched 7.1 shutout innings to win Game 6 50. In Game 7, Shamshad Dar hit 2 homers and drove in 6 runs as the Pearls won 121 to advance. Mumbai Directors vs. Washington Grays: Mumbai took Game 1 92. In Game 2, the score was tied in the 9th until Asvathama Santanu hit a walk-off line drive to win it. Kanakraj Suryanarayanan then dominated Game 3, throwing 7 shutout innings with 10 strikeouts in a 70 win. Avadata Mittal finished the sweep in Game 4, pitching 8 innings of 3-hit ball to win 40. The semifinals featured three IPL South teams and the AL's Hill Country Skyhawks. Bengaluru vs. Hyderabad: Bengaluru won Game 1 52, but the Pearls tied it with an 113 win in Game 2. After Bengaluru took Game 3, the Pearls won Game 4 on a walk-off double by Shamshad Dar to tie the series 22. Hyderabad won Game 5 113 to move within one win of the finals. In Game 6, Bengaluru trailed 61 late but tied it in the 9th on solo homers by Binota Rajarshi and Kushwaha Sreeram. In the 11th, Hridayesvara Chaudhury hit a walk-off solo homer to force Game 7. In the finale, the Pearls won 63 behind 7 strong innings from Cheung Ou. Hill Country vs. Mumbai: Game 1 featured a massive pitching duel. Raoul Heijnis (7 IP, 1 hit) outlasted Kanakraj Suryanarayanan (7 IP, 2 hits) as HCS won 30. In Game 2, Mumbai trailed late but Mu'ayyad bin Fadil hit a 3-run home run in the 9th to tie it. Disnu Nayyar then hit a solo shot in the 12th to give Mumbai a 43 win. After the Skyhawks won Game 3 and Mumbai won Game 4, Game 5 went 15 innings. Mukhtar Gamal drew a bases-loaded walk to give HCS a 21 lead, but Asvathama Santanu hit a 2-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 15th to give Mumbai a 32 win. Mumbai finished the upset in Game 6 with a 63 victory. Hyderabad vs. Mumbai: This was a rematch of the IPL finals. Mumbai took a commanding 3-0 lead, winning the first three games 3-0, 5-2, and 10-5. The Pearls refused to be swept, winning Game 4 4-0 and taking Game 5 8-7 in 12 innings on an Alfons Raaphorst walk-off. In Game 6, Hyderabad hit three solo home runs in the 9th inning to win 9-8 and force a Game 7. In the final game, the Directors took a 4-1 lead after a 3-run homer by CF Jenebere Omorede. The Pearls tied it 4-4 in the 7th. The game remained deadlocked until the bottom of the 13th, when 2B Idhma Srijoy hit a walk-off single. The Mumbai Directors avoided the reverse sweep to win their first GAC title. China secured the #1 seed with a dominant 23-1 record, with their only loss coming against India (5-3 in 11 innings). Japan, India, USA, and Bangladesh all finished 19-5, triggering tiebreakers for the final three byes. Japan beat Bangladesh 5-4. India beat USA 4-3. USA then beat Bangladesh 2-1 for the 4th seed, leaving Bangladesh with the 5th seed and a play-in matchup against Nigeria. Seeding 6-12: Mexico (18-6), Peru (17-7), Great Britain (15-9), Pakistan (15-9), Indonesia (15-9), France (15-9), and Nigeria (14-10). Martinique finished a disappointing 4-20, the ultimate "WBC hangover." The Play-In Round (Best of 5) Great Britain entered with a "Game 1" advantage from their 4-0 tiebreaker win (where Pakistan was held to 1 hit). In Game 2, GB led 8-0 in the 5th, but Pakistan rallied. SS Khalig Khorasani hit a 2-run HR in the 9th to keep it alive, and 2B Ali Mughal drew a walk-off RBI walk in the 11th to win 9-8. GB took Game 3 behind SP Billy Bates (7 IP, 2 H, 1 R) winning 5-1. Pakistan won Game 4 10-6, but Great Britain clinched the series in Game 5 with a 7-4 win led by SP Rio Douthwaite. Bangladesh won Game 1 6-3 to take a 2-0 series lead (due to their seed advantage). Nigeria stayed alive with a 5-3 win in Game 3, but Bangladesh ended the threat with an 8-0 shutout in Game 4 to advance 3-1. Tied 1-1 in Game 2, 2B Jean-Franηois Cτttι hit a walk-off single in the 15th inning to win 2-1 and tie the series. Mexico blew them out 15-1 in Game 3, but France forced a Game 5 with a 2-0 shutout. In the finale, the game was tied 1-1 in the 13th. After a wild pitch moved a runner, SS Ronald Devos hit an RBI single to give France a 2-1 win and the upset over Mexico. Indonesia wiped away Peru's seed advantage immediately. They won Game 2 (3-1), Game 3 (3-1), and Game 4 (11-1) to take the series 3-1. Quarterfinals China swept France. SP Cheung Ou dominated Game 1 (9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 12 K) in an 11-0 win. They won Game 2 (4-3), overcame a 3-0 deficit in Game 3 with 4 runs in the 8th, and finished with a 9-4 win in Game 4. An offensive nightmare for Japan. Game 1 was scoreless through 11. In the 27th inning, 3B Arief Karsumaatmaja hit an RBI double to give Indonesia a 3-2 win. Indonesia followed with three more wins (1-0, 2-0, and 5-2) to complete the sweep. Japan scored only 4 runs in 54 innings. India SP Kanakraj Suryanarayanan threw 8 innings of 2-hit ball with 13 Ks in a 5-0 Game 1 win over Great Britain. India won Game 2 (6-0) and Game 3 (5-1) before GB stole Game 4 (4-2). India closed it out in Game 5 (6-4). Game 1 went 15 innings, ending in a 6-5 USA win after a wild pitch by Bill Mulcrone tied it for Bangladesh in the 9th. In Game 2, SP Rodrigo Armenta (9 IP, 10 K) won 2-1. Game 3 was a 16-0 rout featuring 3 HRs from LF Matt Brown and a 2-hit shutout from SP Jon Mitchell. USA finished the sweep in Game 4 (5-3). Semifinals Indonesia took Game 1 (8-5). China answered in Game 2 (13-1) with Ji-an Cao hitting 2 HRs. In Game 3, 2B Adare Suharto hit an 11th-inning walk-off solo HR for Indonesia. Game 4 ended in another walk-off, a 2-run HR by DH Arjuna Bintang. Despite a 10-3 China win in Game 5, Indonesia clinched the series 4-2 with a 4-1 win in Game 6. India overcame a deficit with 5 runs in the 7th to win Game 1 (6-5). They took Game 2 (4-3) and Game 3 (7-3). The USA won Game 4 (6-4) to avoid the sweep, but India took Game 5 (3-1) to advance. China beats USA 4-3 in the 3rd place game. WBC Finals India dominated the series, winning the first three games 5-2, 3-2, and 2-1. In Game 4, Indonesia tagged SP Kanakraj Suryanarayanan for 3 runs in the 1st inning, but India's offense clawed back to win 6-4 and complete the sweep.
