The Best of BOTH Worlds Tournament
Before I start, I MUST give a huge shout out to Mike Silva and Webrian. Their ideas for the "Bash" and the "Last Team Standing" thread got my juices of ponderance flowing, and this was what came of it. If tey didn't imagine their worlds, I’d still be fiddling with a Random Debut League that I never finish. That being said and those being deservingly credited….
What if we are not as think we see? Could it be possible that the human race, just…isn’t? Are we are a mere part of a grand simulation game being played in another, far advanced world? A wormhole? Parallel universe? Bizarro Jerry? (from Seinfeld for you youngsters out there). Imagine that OOTP was, if fact, the official “MLB” in a parallel universe. Would the ’27 Yankees still BE the ’27 Yankees? Did the 1989 World Series have two Game 3’s due to an earthquake? Did The Babe retire…a Red Sock? The questions are endless, and arguments will fire up. Keeping these scientific thoughts in mind, I give you The Best of Both Worlds. A tournament of tournaments. It pits our reality vs. what could be an alternative reality; one that we may not be prepared to acknowledge. The format: We have recorded every sustainable statistical category since 1871. Brett flirting with .400? The chase for Maris between Sosa and Big Mac? The Miracle Mets? The Rockies falling into a AAAA class of franchise? Yes to one and all! I took every team/franchise record from 1900-2025 (removing the strike of 1982, the lack of a 2014 WS, and all things Covid) and ranked those teams top to bottom, based only on total number of wins. I then weeded out the worst of the worst to come to a field of 2560 teams; 40 groups each with a 64 team tournament. After that task was complete, I then simulated each season from 1900-2025 in OOTP. The teams had no free agency, no trades, and just played “as-is” baseball to determine their 2560 teams, seeds, and omitted historical losers. I placed those team in order, according to overall wins as well. This is where the fun starts. Once having two lists of the 2560 teams field, I averaged out the number of wins in MLB AND OOTP to come up with the final single list of teams to be seeded. From here, the seeded teams were shuffled up and finally placed into they respective groups, ready to fight out the bracket in multiple 9 game series. We will have 40 winners of each group, those being re-seeded based on average total wins again. The remaining 40 runner-up teams will have their own seeding tournament. This will be handled by eliminating the teams with the 8 worst overall average records, leaving us with 32 total “to be seeded” teams. It will look like this: Divide 32 teams into 8 groups (Groups A through H), with 4 teams in each group. Each group plays a round-robin (3 games per team). The top 3 teams from each group advance. The last-place team (4th place) in each group is eliminated. Result: 8 groups × 3 advancing teams = 24 teams remaining. The final seeding will look like this: The 40 automatic bids will be listed high to low again based on average number of wins. These teams will then be seeded 1-10, with 4 teams each having the same seed. The remaining 24 survivors will be listed again, via average wins, and seeded 11-16, with 4 teams in each seed. The 64 teams will then be reshuffled and placed in the final 64-teams bracket of champions. The lone standing team, after another marathon of 9 game series, will be crowned champion of our world….and theirs? Yes, I know the MLB world has real trades and such, while the OOTP world is just as-is. Yes, I know there will be disparity when it comes to the ‘average number of wins, and overall champion. I couldn’t figure out a work around so I just went on my merry way to get this thing rolling. I’m curious how this all plays out, and hope enjoy it enough to stay for the ride! |

I've been hovering here for a few days.
This is a tremendously ambitious project. Not just the scope, but the stat-keeping posted to Excel contains so much information. I've enjoyed going over that, and especially the Tourney Notes. Seriously, who let the 1906 Superbas in?? They were shown the door rather rudely. I am not sure I completely understand it all. I can see that you've compiled a system that melds real-world results with full-season, full-history OOTP results, then spits out 2560 teams divided into 40 64-team tournaments. After all 40 of those tournaments have played out, you will shave off the lowest 8 "winners" to form a 32-team bracket of tournament champions, and those 32 teams will participate in a tournament for the ultimate championship. What you have posted so far is one of those 64-team tournaments. A sample. You had to re-arrange the finalists because A-Rod and Elly De La Cruz both ended up on the 1943 Yankees and the 00 Reds. You DQ'ed those two teams. So, the "1943 Yankees" aren't the historical 1943 Yankees, not with Elly and A-Rod showboating in their dugout. How much do these team rosters change in the full historical replays that happen before the brackets are set? I am asking because: unless we understand the rosters and personalities of these teams, we can't engage with them as readers. If Corbin Carroll and Jose Canseco end up playing on the 1927 Yankees, that fundamentally changes who the "1927 Yankees" are, and thus, it fundamentally changes everything else. The 1932 Philadelphia Athletics defeated the 1985 Toronto Blue Jays in the Best-of-Nine championship series. I am really interested in knowing who was on those teams, especially if 120 years of OOTP simulations has significantly altered the rosters. Then again, I might be completely missing something or mis-reading something. Nevertheless, I am definitely interested and following along. |

yeah..that was the major glitch. I THINK i have it fixed with all the teams reshuffled and re-assigned into groups. im working on group 1 now, and keeping a close eye on it. ill repost it when G1 is done and ive combed through to make sure Canseco is where he should be!
The rosters are historically correct. So the 85 Jays had all the 85 Jays players. Last edited by jparker2112; 05-08-2026 at 06:16 PM. |
