Defense Ratings

How many runs will a 110-plus INFIELD deny in 9 innings? Do all 4 need to perform to achieve the magic number?

How many added WINs does that = in 162 games?

Pitcher HOLD Rating

Can I push the HOLD RUNNER slider to max to make a crappy HOLD pitcher hold runners better?

The answer is less than half a run. Best achievable Zone Rating in the game is somewhere around 80 runs above average over the course of a season, which is half a run per game. That includes outfielders and catchers in addition to infielders. Even adding in an extreme ballpark, you won't get to a full run saved, although it might be close.

OTOH, saving half a run per game is huge over the course of a season. That would add as many as ten wins to the team's record, especially when you factor in bullpen back-enders pitching less because the better arms are getting more outs.

Of course, if your shortstop hits .190 with no walks or power then you're subtracting runs scored from your team's totals. Everything's a trade-off or potential trade-off.

Never seen a noticeable effect with this. You also have to factor in the potential effect on pitcher fatigue with extra throws to first, which is what that slider actually does.

But your SS also has 115 Baserunning, scoring from 1st base on a routine double bobbled by Center Fielder Wladimir Balentien.

My relief pitchers are underworked 80% of the time. They should suffer like everyone else.

...only if your Mendoza-line shortstop managed to get on base to begin with. More likely, he was sitting in the dugout watching the guy who hit that double get stranded at second base with nothing to show for it.

Even a noob wouldn't play Balentien in center field...I hope. I won't even play him in the corners except as a backup. Then again, I'm the guy who's depressed if my team doesn't finish top three in team defense.
