J. Bodell (bodell001---) 1877
In 1877, a player identified as Bodell played in 26 games with the Janesville (WI) Mutuals. A teammate from that club, Frank Smith, identified Bodell in a series of articles about the history of baseball in Janesville published in the Janesville Weekly Gazette in 1905. He stated "You are all acquainted with the career of 'Bodell' otherwise known as Joseph B. Doe, who is now practicing law in Milwaukee."
After his baseball career, Joseph Bodwell Doe joined the Wisconsin National Guard. He advanced to the rank of captain before becoming the Adjutant General of Wisconsin. In 1893, he became an Assistant Secretary of War under President Grover Cleveland, a position he held until 1897. Joseph was born in 1855 and died on October 19, 1925. The photo is from his Find-a-Grave site. Here is a Wiki page on Joseph Doe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Doe |

Ron DiCicco
The photo below is from the Finger Lakes Times of May 16, 1961. It shows DiCicco in the Waterloo (NY) Indians football uniform. The newspapers didn't show him in a baseball uniform.

[QUOTE=Cusick;5190137]Was able to find two photos of Grandy. Neither of them is a stellar shot. The first I think shows him in an Essex Community College uniform making a fielding play. It's from the Baltimore Evening Sun of January 10, 1974. The second shows him in a Midland, TX, uniform. It's from the Midland Reporter-Telegram of May 9, 1978. cleared up photos

For anyone who might be interested, I've been compiling links to career minor league player photos for a number of years. You can find them here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?gid=0#gid=0

Vincent Russello
The photo below is from the Brooklyn Eagle of Aug. 9, 1948. Russello would have been about age 28, and he was with a senior league team. He's #19 and making a tag on a runner. Looks like he is wearing catcher's paraphernalia, which fits one of the positions he played. It's the only photo I could find of him.

Me and the BR Bullpen guys are looking for a photo of Ralph Worrell, a 25 game winner for the 1918 Baltimore Orioles who died later that year from the flu.

John Wakefield 1924
This one may be a long shot, but it's a player I have been unable to find any information on at all aside from a vague mention on Frank Russo's site. His name is John Wakefield and he was with the Syracuse Stars in 1924 and according to Russo, he ended his life after some breakdown over his girlfriend that same year. I was hoping to find an image of this mysterious individual.

John Wakefield (1924)
Quote:
In 1924, he broke his leg in the spring. The St. Louis Globe Democrat said he was from Vanderbilt University. The Syracuse Journal on June 6 (I think - the date is not clear on Fultonhistory.com) reported that Jack Wakefield from Vanderbilt had recovered from his injury and might get a chance in the game that day against Rochester. He showed up in the box score the next day. https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=wakefi001joh He was acquired by Danville later in June, and played for them until early August, when it seems he was injured again. https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=wakefi010--- On August 24, the Nashville Banner reported that he was charged with reckless driving in Memphis after he ran down and seriously injured a little Negro girl. His Christian name was Robert Allen Wakefield. According to his FindAGrave site, he was born in 1902, so he was 22 at the time of his death. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/...llen-wakefield Last edited by prewinter; Yesterday at 11:11 PM. |
