Manager - Grand Hotel manager Jason Porsche was selected as the 2319 Vim! League Manager of the Year today.

He was somewhat of a dark horse next to some of the more flashy managers up for the award. Porsche, who prefers that everyone call him "Cap" or "Skip," tries to shy away from the limelight in a media-driven world.

"It's really unfair to the guys that busted their humps all year long to put all the focus on me now. They showed up early, put in extra time in the cage, worked on their fielding, consulted with our coaching staff and really made 2319 a highlight in my career."

In fairness to this year's Manager of the Year, Porsche certainly played an important part in the Atoms success as he guided them to a first place finish in the Vim! League Harbor Division and a 52-38 record.

Rookie - The regular season is now history and it's awards time in the Vim! League. This year's winner of the Vim! Fresh Face Award is 31-year-old Keg Gutterson of the Acadia Acadians.

The talented third baseman batted .348, played in 89 games and delivered 120 hits in 345 at-bats. His totals also included 23 home runs, 94 RBIs, 54 runs scored, 21 walks and a .380 OBP.

He received 7 first place votes out of a possible 8. Rapp Unzelle of the National Park Gulpers finished second in voting, while John Webber of the National Park Gulpers finished third with 1 first place vote.

Player - Team - First Place - Total Points
Keg Gutterson - Acadia Acadians - 7 - 38

Wookie Chewbacca - Eden Meadows Anglers - 0 - 1
D'Glester Hardunkichud - Grand Hotel Atoms - 0 - 1
Tyler Whitestag - Acadia Acadians - 0 - 1

Reliever - At the young age of only 24, Jhereg Battlement has been named the Vim! League Vim! Refresh Reliever Award winner for 2319.

The future appears bright for the Grand Hotel Atoms relief ace, who captured the award with 25 saves in 45 relief appearances, 36 strikeouts in 48 innings and a record of 3-4 to go with his 2.62 ERA.

He received 8 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Snacks Arana of the Dalton Farm Fog Crawlers finished second in voting, while Rude Roy Binns of the Echo Lake Harbormen finished third.

Mount Desert Island League Awards

Hitter - When it came to hitting the baseball, Wellington Yueh had few peers in the Mount Desert Island League this year. The gifted first baseman for MS Azalea tagged opposing pitchers for a .341 average and was voted the Most Valuable Player Award for 2319. Included in his season stats were 79 hits, 7 doubles, no triples, 24 home runs, 45 runs scored and 55 RBIs.

He received 3 first place votes out of a possible 8. Miguel Askew of the Rock Point Barnacles finished second in voting with 3 first place votes, while Bloop Single of the Rock Point Barnacles finished third with 1 first place vote.

Player - Team - First Place - Total Points
Wellington Yueh - MS Azalea Shipwrecks - 3 - 81
Miguel Askew - Rock Point Barnacles - 3 - 78

Camp Buddy - Kitteredge Rad Rabbits - 0 - 14
Klak Moore - Brooke's Head Lights - 0 - 14

Starter - Cliff's Edge ace Pocket Severin put up some sensational stats for the 2319 season and has been voted the Mount Desert Island League Pitcher of the Year Award winner.

The 23-year-old Actors star made 14 starts and racked up a 9-3 record. He pitched 102.1 innings, collected 78 strikeouts, gave up 44 walks and 87 hits in holding the opposition to a .233 batting average.

He received 8 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Copper Dand of the Haddock Cove Engineers finished second in voting, while Echo Shakerley of the Nucleus Radchickens finished third.

Player - Team - First Place - Total Points
Pocket Severin - Cliff's Edge Actors - 8 - 56

Samwell Brett - MS Azalea Shipwrecks - 0 - 7
Minny Mink - Nucleus Radchickens - 0 - 7
Jason Collins - Cliff's Edge Actors - 0 - 4

Reliever - Aaron Akhurst said he thinks hitters often underestimate him, as he's only 22 years old.

But he'll certainly be getting a lot more respect now, as the Haddock Cove Engineers rising star has won the Mount Desert Island League Reliever of the Year Award for 2319.

He captured the award on the strength of his 1.30 ERA over 34.2 innings. He also had 12 saves in 28 relief appearances, 6 strikeouts and only 12 walks.

He received 8 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Ellis Brittle of the MS Azalea Shipwrecks finished second in voting, while Winn Adami of the Kitteredge Rad Rabbits finished third.

Player - Team - First Place - Total Points
Aaron Akhurst - Haddock Cove Engineers - 8 - 40
Ellis Brittle - MS Azalea Shipwrecks - 0 - 18
Winn Adami - Kitteredge Rad Rabbits - 0 - 12
Murphy Molony - Haddock Cove Engineers - 0 - 2

Vim! League Hall of Fame

It is with the highest honor that I name the five players that have best represented the Vim! League over the years from the debut season in 2301 until this final season in 2319. Three of the players were quite easy to choose, while the last two were quite difficult. I have listed them in alphabetical order by last name below, along with their baseball card, top hitter/batter awards, All-Star selections, and top stats. Here are the five best players ever in Vim! League history:

1B Toppie Gunn, Dalton Farm Fog Crawlers (2306-2319) - Five-time Vim! MVP winner; 13-time All-Star; Career leader in home runs (308), walks (570), and WAR (42.33).

1B Chris Knickerbocker, Echo Lake Harbormen (2304-2317) - One-time Vim! MVP winner; 12-time All-Star; Career leader in runs (852), total bases (2754), and RBI (968).

SP Jason Woods, Echo Lake Harbormen (2303-2319) - Five-time Vim! Top Arm Award winner; 13-time All-Star; Career leader in complete games (120), shutouts (29), innings pitched (2816.0), hits allowed (3075), strikeouts (2056), and WAR (70.40).

RF Billy Yudkowsky, National Park Gulpers (2306-2319) - 10-time All-Star; Career leader in at bats (4833), hits (1656), singles (1149), and doubles (366).

1B Hazmatt Zuniga, Far Harbor Ghoul Whales (2311-2319) - Three-time Vim! MVP winner; 9-time All-Star; Career leader in OBP (.451), SLG (.683), and OPS (1.134).

Sole Survivor Series: Easy Town vs Egret, Games 1 and 2 Results (Expanded Stories)

Game 1: Egret 6, Easy Town 5

Sole Survivor Series Game 1 Goes to Egret, Thanks to Powers

The Egret Ninjas started the Sole Survivor Series in style, downing the visiting Easy Town Assaultrons at Fallon Field at Egret Tours Marina by a score of 6-5 to grab an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Ninjas third baseman Shane Powers belted 2 home runs. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice.

The Ninjas took the lead for good in the bottom of the 3rd. Trailing 2-1, Buns Palmer hit a one-out single off Easy Town starter, Cutter Redman. With two outs, Powers went yard, making it 3-2.

"Every time I go up there, I try and hit a ball hard," said Powers.

In the bottom of the 5th, Egret first baseman Deez Phantom had a productive at-bat. With runners on 1st and 2nd and one out, Phantom stroked a 2-run triple to left-center. It made the score 5-2, Egret. For the game, he was 1-4 with a triple. He drove in 2 runs and scored once.

Jafar Khassanov was the winning pitcher, allowing two earned runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Outie Lett potched the final two innings, allowing three earned runs.

The Trons had a chance in the top of the 9th. Entering the inning trailing 6-2, they had to overcome Lett's superior bullpen pitching compared to what they had seen all season. Slammin' Sammy Holloway started the inning with a double, followed by a single by Bill Barnes. Joey Bell then doubled in Holloway and moved Barnes to third with no outs. Spike Emerson then his an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 6-4. After a wild pitch moved Bell to third, Finnan Hunt walked, putting the tying run on base with one out. Donnie Gray hit the second sacrifice fly of the inning, making it 6-5. Eden Babz then hit into a groundout, stopping the rally.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Fallon Field at Egret Tours Marina in Egret Tours Marina.

Game 2: Egret 3, Easy Town 0

Egret Pins 3-0 Loss on Easy Town

Starter Big Dog Monaghan was sensational for the Egret Ninjas in his team's 3-0 triumph over the Easy Town Assaultrons in Game 2 of the Sole Survivor Series. Monaghan pitched well, but Egret picked up the win to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

Monaghan pitched seven innings of shutout ball, allowing five hits walking three, and striking out four. Pin Tell pitched the final two innings, allowing no hits or runs and striking out two, for the save.

All scoring happened in the bottom of the 4th. After Shane Powers doubled to start the inning, Buns Palmer came through for Egret with a 2-run home run to make it 2-0. The second baseman went 2 for 4 for the game, including 1 home run and 1 double. He scored 1 run and collected 2 RBI. The Ninjas scored one more run following three-straight singles by Joe Bureau, Hugo Steadymaster, and then Monaghan.

"We haven't stopped playing," Easy Town manager Prince Arthur said. "We didn't get this far to give up."

Halep Gutteridge of the Trons was the only player on his team with multiple hits (2). Easy Town finished with five hits, all singles. Finnan Hunt walked twice and stole two bases. That now places him in a tie for 12th all-time in postseason stolen bases, close to joining teammate Babz on the all-time postseason stolen bases list. Babz, who also stole a base, is the all-time leader with 38.

The next game is set to be played on Thursday, September 25th , 2319 at Easy Town Field.

Sole Survivor Series: Easy Town vs Egret, Games 3, 4, and 5 Results (Expanded Stories)

Game 3: Easy Town 4, Egret 3

Easy Town Breaks Through for First Win in Sole Survivor Series; Now Trails 2-1

The Easy Town Assaultrons have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading Egret Ninjas, winning, 4-3, at Easy Town Field. Assaultrons right-hander Red Eagle threw 6.0 innings of 5-hit ball. The win cuts the deficit facing the Assaultrons to 2-1 in the best-of-7 Sole Survivor Series.

The game was at a stalemate until first baseman Donnie Gray came to bat in the bottom of the 8th. Facing Egret pitcher Outie Lett, he hit a 1-2 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Easy Town on top, 4-3.

"We were a little off-kilter to start the series, but we're getting things figured out now," Easy Town manager Prince Arthur told reporters. "At least I hope we are."

Trons starter Red Eagle was named Game MVP despite the no-decision. In 6.0 innings, Eagle allowed three earned runs on five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.

Egret's Deez Phantom tied the SCA record for walks in a game (4). A-Train Gilmore singled and scored twice.

The Grays each had two hits for the Assaultrons. Donnie Gray scored once and drove in a run. J.J. Gray doubled, scored once, and drove in one run.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Easy Town Field in Easy Town.

Game 4: Easy Town 11, Egret 5

Barnes Blasts Ninjas, Assaultrons Take Game 4, 11-5

Easy Town catcher Bill Barnes was the difference-maker for the Assaultrons in what turned into a shootout with the Egret Ninjas. Barnes earned accolades after going 2-for-5 in the 11-5 Assaultrons win. With the victory, the Assaultrons moved into a 2-2 tie in the best-of-7 series.

A key moment came with two out in the bottom of the 5th. That's when Barnes hit a fastball from Jafar Khassanov for a two-run single, putting Easy Town up, 4-1. The Trons scored six in the inning, putting them up 8-1 at the time.

"I'm just trying to make good contact," said Barnes, "one at-bat at a time."

The Ninjas looked to threaten the Easy Town lead in the top of the 7th when they scored four runs to cut the score to 9-5. A-Train Gilmore had an RBI triple in the inning, and Plastic Augmon hit a two-run homer.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Easy Town Field in Easy Town.

Game 5: Egret 10, Easy Town 2

Road Win Lifts Egret to 3-2 Lead in SSS

Game 5 was big. So was Big Dog Monaghan.

The Egret starter rose to the occasion at Easy Town Field, leading the Ninjas to a crucial 10-2 victory over the Easy Town Assaultrons. Monaghan threw 7.0 innings of 3-hit ball as the Ninjas won on the road to seize a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 Sole Survivor Series.

The Ninjas entered the top of the 8th trailing 2-0, but then the floodgates opened. With Tee Browning replacing Astro Puptent, what was a pitcher's duel became an Egret rout. Hugo Steadymaster led off with a single, followed by Pol Johnston reaching on an error. After Plastic Augmon walked to load the bases, Beast Miranda came through with a two-RBI single to tie the game, 2-2. Augmon was thrown out at third on the play.

With one out and a runner on first, Browning intentionally walked Deez Phantom. Shane Powers then singled to reload the bases. Buns Palmer then singled, driving in two for the 4-2 Egret lead. After A-Train Gilmore walked to load the bases once again, Tut Cadillac came on in relief of Browning. Joe Bureau promptly answered by hitting a 1-0 triple, driving in three and making it 7-2 Egret. Steadymaster followed with an RBI double to finish the scoring in the 8th. The Ninjas added on two more in the 9th.

Said losing manager Prince Arthur: "Obviously, we wished for a better outcome. The bullpen has to hold leads."

The Ninjas were led by the hitting of Buns Palmer, who went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI, and Steadymaster, who went 2 for 3 with a walk, a run, and two RBI.

While not named the Game MVP over Monaghan, the Assaultrons' Puptent pitched 7.0 innings of excellent ball. He allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out four Ninjas.

The next game is set to be played for Monday, September 29th , 2319 at Fallon Field at Egret Tours Marina in Egret Tours Marina.

I was right about the Railroad division, but would never picked that it would be Egret to do it. Makes me feel better about Glowing Sea missing out. Hope they can pull it out here. Shrinking the rotation helps them and the pack of the pen is good. No game seven needed

Egret has definitely been an "out of nowhere" team. They are decent but not great pretty much throughout the roster, and they only have three guys 30 or over: RP Fio Treelover (31), C Hugo Steadymaster (31), RF Deez Phantom (31).

PAM saw something we did not, though a bit off on Roxbury being playoff worthy. Predicted Railroad League order of finish:

1T - Egret, FHE, and Roxbury
4T - Diamond City and Vault 81
6 - Glowing Sea
7 - Oberland

Sole Survivor Series: Easy Town vs Egret, Games 6 and 7 Results (Expanded Stories)

Game 6: Easy Town 6, Egret 0

Easy Town Win Evens Series at 3

The Easy Town Assaultrons and the Egret Ninjas will take the Sole Survivor Series to a decisive 7th game. Facing a must-win situation, the Assaultrons shut out the Ninjas, 6-0, at Fallon Field at Egret Tours Marina to force the series into what will essentially be a one-game playoff.

Easy Town right-hander Red Eagle did his part. He threw 7.0 innings of shutout ball, allowing three hits and striking out three.

"A confident pitcher is a dangerous thing," said Easy Town manager Prince Arthur. "That's what Red is right now."

The Trons took the lead for good in the top of the 1st. After Egret starter Hub Purdue dished a one-out walk to Donnie Gray, Eden Babz followed with an RBI double. Babz was one of five Assaultrons to have multiple hits in the game for the 15-hit performance. Six different players drove in a run.

The Ninjas could not get anything going against Eagle and relievers Tee Browning and Bang Bang Jennings, gathering only five hits, four of them singles, in the game. Joe Bureau's 5th-inning double was the only extra-base hit.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Fallon Field at Egret Tours Marina in Egret Tours Marina.

Game 7: Egret 5, Easy Town 3

It's Over! Egret Defeats Easy Town

For the Egret Ninjas, it was a joyful time; for the Easy Town Assaultrons, it was gloom and doom.

With a 5-3 win at Fallon Field at Egret Tours Marina, Egret closed out the championship 4-3 over Easy Town.

The Ninjas have now won their 1st league championship in franchise history. The streets around the Ninjas' stadium were a mob scene, filling quickly with fans, while banners and flags were held high and waved proudly.

"It's unbelievable for us, our great fans, and all of Egret," said a smiling owner Anne Hargraves. "The guys really put their heart and soul into this season and it paid off for them."

It was a tight game throughout with the Ninjas finally breaking through for good in the bottom of the 7th. After the Assaultrons tied the game with two runs in the top of the inning, Egret struck. Tut Cadillac came on in relief for the Trons, set to face C Hugo Steadymaster. With the count at 2-2, Steadymaster hit a high fly to deep right field, sailing it over the fence at 346 feet.

"That was the tarberry on top!" Egret manager Matt "Ballhawk" Getman said. "It is so great. Eighteen years is a long time." Getman was last the champion manager in 2301 with Nordhagen Beach.

In a somewhat somber and dejected Assaultrons clubhouse, manager Prince Arthur said his team "just didn't get the job done."

"The Ninjas played as good as any team I've seen and deserve to be champions," he said.

Shane Powers was named the Game 7 MVP and Series MVP. In Game 7, he went 2 for 4 with two home runs, two runs, and two RBI. His 8th-inning home run finalized the scoring. In the series, Powers was 9 for 26 (.346) with two doubles, four homers, four walks, six runs, and six RBI.

"All fours and sixes, huh?" Powers said. "Maybe I need a number change to keep this good luck!"

A former Bunker Hill 1st round pick in the 2313 Draft, Powers made his first All-Star team in 2319 and now has won his first championship. "It's been a dream!"

The champs finished the regular season 71-59 and claimed 4th place in the South Charles Association Railroad League.

I gave up in frustration yesterday. After a mistake in setting up (yeah, I know I stated I would be meticulous but misread what league I was deleting, thinking it was the MDIL...), I went to restore my backup. Three hours later, it finally timed out. I was able to restore the back up later, but then it kept timing out again and again when I was going through the process of creating a new league and setting up the expansion teams' farm system.

I made a separate save on an external drive of the day before the offseason (day after SSS completed). I may upload that back onto my computer and then start the process over for a "clean" file.

With hope,

StLee

Thanks. I think I narrowed it down to what is slowing down the program to a crawl: images. Even when I am trying to add a logo to an individual team, it takes awhile. That makes sense why it was slogging through the backup load: the images are abundant.

I may start reducing images if that is the problem. I have a pretty new PC and there is still plenty of disk space. I am also multitasking constantly on my computer and sometimes keep it running for days. Chrome seems to be using up even more memory than it used to, too, so I may need to limit my open tabs at one time and hold back on having a YouTube video playing to keep the computer awake at all times. I usually forget to turn off that video, even when I kick up Netflix or something.

Anyway, everything seemed to align yesterday other than the really slow time to upload logos and uniforms for new teams. I will wait, though, until I have moved ahead some more before posting an update in case I have to revert back in time again.

November 2319

BNN Report

News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

3 November 2319

Rookie Draft Preview: Are the Marcus Twins Better than the Babz Twins?

The 2319 Rookie Draft (needing to be separated from the 2319 Expansion Draft two days later) will feature a set of star twins for the second time in CBO history.

In the 2311 draft, twins Eden and Esau Babz were selected 4th and 17th overall. Since then, the two center fielders have combined for four Nuka Hitter Awards and Eden Babz may become the all-time steals leader this season.

For the 2319 draft, 1B Randall Marcus of Roxbury College and 1B JaRussell Marcus of Saint Anselm College exit as the #1 and #3 all-time home runs leaders. Randall hit 92, while JaRussell hit 77.

In terms of the draft, JaRussell is expected to go higher than his twin, though both could land in the 1st Round. JaRussell has been projected as high as #1 overall, though it is more likely that he goes in the 4-10 range. Randall Marcus is likely to go in the back half of the 1st round to a playoff team that needs more power in the middle of its lineup.

In their careers, the Marcus twins will be compared to the Babz twins. Which will emerge as the best twins ever? Time will tell if JaRussell and Marcus can begin their path towards a Hall of Fame career like the path that the Babz twins are currently on.

Here is a look of how we think the Top Ten picks will go (editor's note*: the OSA Mock Draft was unavailable at the time of this publication).

1. Country Crossing - Needs: SP, RP, 2B
Pick: SP Graham Cracker Fontenot, Elms College - The 2319 Top Collegiate Pitcher Award winner, Fontenot had a dominant junior season, going 10-3 with a 1.66 ERA in 119.1 innings pitched. He has an explosive fastball that is almost impossible to hit at waist level or higher. Scouts think he has the potential to be one of the top pitchers ever, though he is expected to take a year or two in the minors before making his way to the CBO.

2. Oberland T-51s - Needs: SP, CF, C
Pick: SP Zap Everitts, New Bedford (CYL) - Everitts had an injury-riddled senior season for the Whales, limiting him to just four starts. Scouts think that all four of his pitches--cutter, curve, fast, and changeup, in order of quality--will develop into strong CBO-level pitches, making him an ace in the making. Of course, he will need to stay healthy after missing 13 starts in the past three seasons. A regimen of body building could help his lean frame get stronger for endurance.

3. Far Harbor Fog - Pick: SP Maverick Rizzy, Quincy College - The 2318 Top Collegiate Pitcher Award winner, Rizzy is an ace who had two excellent seasons in his sophomore (10-3, 1.40) and junior (8-3, 1.66) seasons. Scouts are not as high on Rizzy as some other pitchers, though he is the best control pitcher in the 2319 Draft.

4. Providence Super Mutants - Pick: 1B JaRussell Marcus, Saint Anselm College - As mentioned in the introduction above, Marcus is considered one of the top position prospects in the draft and is expected to be selected by an expansion team as a middle-of-the-order hitter. Though he could use some development in the minors to reach his potential, he is likely to be penciled in as his team's Day 1 first baseman and cleanup hitter.

5. Cape Cod Mirelurks - Pick: RF Old Blue Sandoval, Narragansett U - While Sandoval saw a huge drop in home run production from 2318 to 2319, scouts love his power potential and can see him possibly being a 30-homer hitter in the CBO. He is already big but has the body size to grow more mass for more power. He can be an OK outfielder, but his value is purely in the batter's box.

6. Nuka World Thrills - Pick: SP Wand Engill, Castle (CYL) - Engill has a lot of zip on his pitches, leading to him not losing a game in his junior (5-0, 2.19) and senior (7-0, 1.06) seasons with the Freedom. He can hit 100 MPH already at 18, leading to 100 Ks in 59.2 innings pitched his senior season. Scouts are excited about his stuff and control, and the Thrills would be thrilled to get Engill at the 6th pick.

7. Quincy Granites - Needs: 2B, SP, SS
Pick: SS Pattie Pembroke, Barrington (CYL) - The Granites could seriously use help up the middle, and Pembroke may be the guy for them here. While not gifted with a lot of speed, Pembroke is considered a top of the order hitter due to his high contact potential and the ability to get on base. He had a .437, which was nowhere near the highest in the CYL, but was still a good number. Scouts think that number will rise as he develops more.

8. Nordhagen Beach Party Boys - Needs: C, RF, SP
Pick: C Joe Rathmann, Jr., Holyoke (CYL) - Rathmann started hitting his potential during his senior season with the Mech Dragons, but he is definitely a player who needs plenty of development. As a defensive catcher, he is already CBO-ready with a golden arm that could even lead to some pitching opportunities. While he is pretty good with the bat at recognizing pitches, his swing needs some work to make better contact. We are projecting Rathmann here purely because of the Party Boys' needs, but scouts are not as high on his hitting ability, meaning he is looking at batting somewhere around 7th or 8th in a lineup.

9. Spectacle Island Reapers - Needs: 2B, RP, RF
Pick: LF Yeller Cocoa, Newburyport (CYL) - The oldest of the Cocoa boys, Yeller is a heavy "put the ball in play" hitter, which could lead to him hitting 2nd in a lineup. He does not have much power, hitting 17 total in his four years with the Cubs, but his career CYL average of .342 shows that he can be a solid hitter. Cocoa is a good defensive corner outfielder who will probably settle into LF, though he is listed at RF currently.

10. Roxbury Rad Sox - Needs: LF, RP, SP
Pick: 1B Rocket Rooth, New Haven (CYL) - While his stats in high school were not spectacular, scouts think that Rooth will turn out to be much like his father, Babs Rooth, in the power category. They also think that he will be a patient hitter who waits for the right pitch, leading to a lot of potential offense generated. Rooth can take time to develop since the Rad Sox already have a power-hitting 1B in Honker Trinkl.

* Note to future self: check the nation of expansion teams. I did not even think to look there, but two franchises did not have a nation set in a no-foreigners league. I think that made the Mock Draft wacky and then I simmed to the draft and two teams were not drafting. Finally, I stopped after they skipped their first three picks and figured out why. So, I am in the process of creating a story around why the franchises did not make their first three picks. I think I got something.

Rounds 4-20 went swimmingly.

DRAFTS!

2319 Rookie Draft

The first 32-team Rookie Draft took place, but we also had an interesting decision by two of the teams. Both the Cape Cod Mirelurks and Providence Super Mutants decided to forego their first three picks in favor of choosing a post-expansion draft player with a level of compensation being sending a 7th-round pick for that unprotected player chosen in the 1st round in a previous draft, a 10th-round pick for 2nd round players, and a 13th-round pick for a 3rd-round player. Only playoff teams could have a former drafted player picked. We will report on those players in the slot for them.

According to Providence GM, Donncha Graves, the reasoning behind this decision is to choose players that are more likely to help the team now instead of choosing a top player that will not be ready for the CBO but will be forced to play there early.

"We're not building the Mutants to win today," Graves said. "We want to build a team that wins a lot of games tomorrow."

CBO Selects First Hall of Fame Class

Five legends of CBO baseball have been inducted to the inaugural Hall of Fame (HOF). We will feature each one below in alphabetical order. There were also six other players who were not the Top 5 vote getters but will be eligible in 10 seasons after retirement as part of a "senior class" of potential HOF members. They will become eligible beginning in 2325. All other players are no longer eligible for the HOF.

Those six players who will be eligible again in 2325 are:

SS Jake Doucette, Primary Team: Atom
LF Dan Erb, Primary Team: Concord
SP Gavin Eviritts, Primary Team: County Crossing
RF Tomas Jones, Primary Team: University Point
CL Josh Samm, Primary Team: Diamond City
SP Phlip Wallace, Primary Team: University Point

HOF Member: #17 SP Tony Bertha, University Point

What does it take to make the baseball Hall of Fame?

Well, whatever it is, Tony Bertha has it. He was inducted into the Commonwealth Baseball Organization Hall of Fame today.

Retiring at age 39, Bertha had one of the most illustrious careers ever with a 215-128 won-loss mark and a 3.56 ERA. He racked up 480 mound appearances and struck out 2066 in 3195.1 innings.

Asked by reporters to describe what it takes to become a Hall of Famer, he replied, "I guess it all started at my high school graduation. The speaker said to be successful in life, you needed to find 'something you love.' I am here today because I found something I love. Baseball has been my life. It has never been a job. I have been able to have fun playing a game and making a wonderful life for myself and my family. I am a kid that never really had to grow up. Just go to the ballpark each day and throw strikes. That's it."

Tony Bertha closed by saying, "God gave me the talent and blessed me with great coaches, managers, and teammates, who helped me develop it."

HOF Member: #4 SS Austin Engill, University Point

The baseball legends today welcomed to their exclusive club a new shortstop by the name of Austin Engill. His induction ceremony was held today at the Commonwealth Baseball Organization Hall of Fame.

"I remember thinking to myself after I had had a couple of good years that if I keep doing this, maybe I just might make it to the Hall of Fame. The dream became a reality today and I must say this is a very proud day.

Over his career Engill batted .249 and collected 1664 hits, 439 home runs and 1233 RBIs. He played in 1920 games and retired from baseball at age 38. His best years came as a member of the University Point Deathclaws, whose hat he wore at his induction ceremony.

His former manager introduced Engill saying, "The big thing about Austin is that he could hit any pitch. I don't mean only strikes. He could hit a ball off his ankles or off his ear."

HOF Member: #20 CF Maxx Murtagh, Nordhagen Beach

One of the best players ever, center fielder Maxx Murtagh, has received the ultimate honor for a baseball player -- being inducted into the Commonwealth Baseball Organization Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony, which was held today, included tributes from his former teammates. One of them recognized his unparalleled work ethic, another his "naturally pure" swing, and yet another, his love for the game.

Murtagh received numerous awards during his playing days, but he said nothing can compare to being enshrined into the Hall of Fame.

In a career spanning 1556 games, Murtagh batted .283 with 1662 hits, 380 home runs, 967 RBIs and 1208 runs scored. He retired in 2314.

HOF Member: #16 C Biter Trout, County Crossing

The Commonwealth Baseball Organization Hall of Fame just added a fine catcher and hitter to its number. The newest member of baseball's most elite group is Biter Trout, who retired at the age of 39.

"I always knew I was good enough to play, but the Hall of Fame was one of the few things I never even dreamed of," said Trout at his induction ceremony. "For me to focus a lot on the individual, that's not the way I learned to play the game. Baseball is a team game. You win as a team, you lose as team. You also do so many things together, but it is not an 'I' thing."

During his illustrious career, Trout had 79 home runs among his 2177 hits, while batting .336. He played in 1872 games, scored 1014 runs and knocked in 908 runs.

HOF Member: #22 1B Zeldolph Violet, County Crossing

415 home runs, 1786 hits and 1259 RBIs are the stuff of legend, but Zeldolph Violet doesn't see it that way.

"For me, baseball is about the team winning. I could have taken an 0-for-4 that day, but if our team won, I don't think you could have come into the locker room and been able to tell that I did not get a hit because the most important thing to me was that we won. That was what we intended to do when we took the field. That's what it was about."

Fortunately for baseball's newest immortal, he had far more good days than bad days. That's why Violet has been installed into the Commonwealth Baseball Organization Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association. In his historic career the standout first baseman participated in 1649 games, batted .311, scored 1080 runs... and won a few games, too.

CCBL Top Freshmen

The CCBL has announced its freshman crop with 2136 players entering the collegiate ranks in 2320. Here are our picks for the Top 5 Freshmen, five players we think we will see in the CBO in 3-6 years.

1. 1B Meal Ticket Markert, Assumption - Scouts believe he could develop into an all-time great player, especially for an uncanny patience at the plate that forces pitchers to throw strikes or walk him. Scouts think that he will be best at punishing balls over the plate and be a leader in homers. he is a rare power-hitting switch hitter who can hit homers from either side of the plate. He is projected to be a 1B thanks to being left-handed and with almost no legs to run around the outfield.

2. SS Buddy Shirt, Saint Michael's - One of the fab freshmen with the Purple Knights, Shirt also has an elite eye that will serve him well in hitting for power and average. While scouts believe power could develop more as he builds muscle, a double-digit amount will be the expectation for now. What he will do is have a tremendous OBP at the top of a lineup.

3. 3B Money LaPeze, Saint Michael's - The second of the Purple Knights' grand entry into the CCBL, landing both Shirt and LaPeze could lead to early success. LaPeze may take more time to develop but is expected to be a pure hitter for average who loves LCF and RCF placement on his hits. His glove and arm are already CBO-worthy, but he needs to work on accuracy in turning double plays. He will steal some bases and may project as a leadoff hitter eventually.

4. 3B Old Nick Perkins, Norwich - Another freshmen known most for his patience at the plate. Perkins may not ever lead in average nor home runs, but he should always be productive in each. He has a strong arm, making him ideal at 3B.

5. 2B C.J. Thirtyfive, Colby-Sawyer - Thirtyfive is the power hitter of the group and should begin his career hitting a good share of homers. He is another patient hitter, but he does swing and miss at pitches he recognizes because he tries to murder the ball. His defense is also suspect right now, which could lead to him playing a corner IF position in time.

CYL Top Freshmen

There is a good group of freshmen coming in. Of the 1497 new players, here are five we think may see themselves drafted at the top in four years:

1. SP Frosty Bagg, Old Orchard - This lefty comes into his CYL career with a six-pitch repertoire, though coaches may force him to focus on fewer pitches. Scouts see his changeup and splitter as his money balls, with his fastball currently his top pitch. He has the potential to be a "ghost" pitcher where his pitches move a lot but still paint the corners. Scouts see him as a current and future ace.

2. Aye-Aye Mour, Woonsocket - Taller and leaner than his seven-time All-Star father, Mour is a power-hitting catcher who can draw a lot of walks. He tends to rely on the home run a little too much, so coaches need to try to train the uppercut swing out of him. He needs a lot of development on defense before he is ready to be an everyday catcher.

3. SS Bad News Behr, Nauset Beach - He can play anywhere on the field, but his position for now is SS. He is someone who can hit for average and power, though his power is expected to outshine his contact ability at the next level. Behr may not be an everyday player in the lineup as a freshman, but he should work his way into CYL All-Star status in no time.

4. CF Owen Gep, Northampton - Another son of a CB great, Gep is also a CF like his brother in Sudbury, Orel. Gep's oldest brother, Odin, is now with The Slog's GBRL team, Coventry. Owen Gep has decent speed but probably will play LF at the next level. He has good power and a good eye, so he will be a top OPS guy in his class. He needs to work a lot more on hitting for contact.

5. SP Clubhouse Wicks, Coventry - Wicks has three pitches that he is already very good at throwing. He currently tops out at 94 on his cutter but could develop into a true blazer. His movement frustrates batters, so he should keep them off balance with his cutter, along with his curve and changeup.

CCBL Opening Day Predictions

The Commonwealth Collegiate Baseball League opens its 2320 campaign today. Last season, the College Series saw the Dartmouth Big Green of the Northern Commonwealth Conference defeat the Worcester State Lancers of the Mid-Commonwealth Conference for their first championship in program history.

This season, there are few teams has in the championship race, with only three teams--the Fairfield Stags, Roxbury College Tigers, and Maine-Presque Isle owls--predicted to win 40 games or more in the 60-game season. That means it should be a fun ride.

Fairfield has only made one playoff appearance in its seven seasons in the CCBL. That was a 2317 when they advanced all the way to the Final Four before falling to Commonwealth University.

Roxbury College has also been to one playoff in its four years in the CCBL. In 2318, the Tigers had a bye but were swept in the Sweet 16.

Maine-Presque Isle is entering its third year in the CCBL but made it last season in just their second season. However, the Owls fell to Framingham State in the Play-in Round.

Among players expected to compete for awards, Rhode Island's Zack Newyorke is expected to be the top hitter and Roxbury College's Ronnie Rants is expected to be the top pitcher.

CYL Opening Day Predictions

Multiple teams across the Commonwealth Youth League are expected to compete for a championship in 2320, but PAM has picked three teams to be tied for the best overall record, 36-14. Those teams are the Plum Island Candymen of the NR's W.E.B. DuBois Division, the Taunton Giants of the SR's Samuel Morse Division, and the New Bedford Whales of the SR's Thomas Mayhew Division. Last season, the Enfield Sasquatch defeated the Derry Farmers in the Youth Series.

Plum Island is seeking its third playoff appearance in 8th season in the CYL. The Candymen made it to the Regional Opening Round last season before falling to Beerthirty.

Taunton has been a highly successful team but has not won a championship. In 14 years in the CYL, the Giants have been in the playoffs 11 times. The Giants lost to Beantown in the Youth Series in 2309. That team was led by freshman SP Siltbean Ferguson, a 2312 1st-round draft pick by Bunker Hill.

New Bedford has appeared in seven playoffs in 14 seasons in the CYL. Like the Giants, the Whales have appeared in the Youth Series. In 2314, New Bedford fell to the Needham Radstorm. Two leaders of that team were current Atom SS Redeye Perez and Vault 81 RF Tommy Haudson.

For predicted award winners, in the NR, the top hitter is expected to be sophomore 1B Dimmy Finster of North Charles Bank. Freshman pitcher Frosty Bagg of Old Orchard is the pick to be the top pitcher. Last season's winners were The Hub Russell of the Sandstalkers as the top hitter and Dart Tall Elk of Sudbury as the top pitcher.

In the SR, freshman 1B Nile Thompson of Dennis is the pick to win the top hitter award. Sophomore Justin Nightwatch of Bridgewater is the pick as the top pitcher to repeat his 2319 performance. Taunton's Hiski Airikkala was the best hitter in 2319.

CBO Predictions

The first season of the 32-team CBO begins today with a season where one team is expected to stand out from the rest. In the 25th season of official baseball play in the Commonwealth, and the 23rd season of the official Commonwealth Baseball Organization, this season brings a new level of excitement with the addition of the Far Harbor Fog in the Brotherhood League, the Nuka World Thrills in the Institute League, the Cape Cod Mirelurks in the Minutemen League, and the Providence Super Mutants in the Railroad League.

This season, 2320, PAM has picked the top teams all the way to the bottom through millions of simulations and arriving at a consensus. PAM has selected the CBO's top team to be the FHE Yao Guai, nine games better than the second-best team, a fellow RL team, Diamond City. PAM has selected Fort Hagen to be the top team in the NCA, one game better than both Malden and Sunshine Tidings.

Looking at PAM's playoff predictions based on record, the NCA playoffs will be made up of the Institute League and the Grognaks. In the SCA, PAM has there being an even split of ML and RL teams, with Atom and Jamaica Plain finishing in a tie atop the ML.

For the expansion teams, PAM has every team finishing 8th in their leagues. Cape Cod is expected to be the best of the bunch, followed by the Fog, Thrills, and Super Mutants. In reverse order, those four teams are expected to have the top four picks in the 2320 Draft with University Point expected to have the 5th-overall pick.

Looking at the award-winner picks, there are no surprises for the assumed winners and few newcomers joining the top players list.

In the NCA Nuka Hitter race, Easy Town's CF Eden Babz is expected to win his second-straight award and fourth overall. Among the expectations in 2320, PAM predicts Babz to steal 113 bases, 20 more than his record-setting performance in 2317 in 14 fewer games. Babz is 51 stolen bases away from becoming the all-time leader over the current leader, Bubb Islander.

Other hitter award candidates in the NCA include Malden's 3B Jacob Tarberry, the 2316 Nuka Hitter Award winner; Sunshine Tidings' 2B Johnboy Zikmund, who made his first All-Star appearance last season in just his second full season; and 2319 Red Rocket Rookie Award winner, 1B Marl Moriarty of Bunker Hill. An interesting exclusion from the Top 10 list is the 75ers' CF Esau Babz, the 2318 winner, 3rd-place finisher in 2319, and the CBO Spring Training batting leader (.508/7/22) in average, RBI, OBP, SLG, OPS, H, R, 3B (tie), TB, XBH, ISO, and WPA. WAR is not calculated, but he would have been the leader in that, too.

In the race for the NCA's Vim! Pitcher Award, Salem's Paul Stains is expected to win his third award (2310, 2315). Nahant's closer the past two seasons (62 saves), Carter Hall, will move into a starting role in 2320, and PAM has him finishing as the runner-up. Other candidates include Cambridge's Scooter Yaghmour (2316), Fort Hagen's Bubs Tentsleep, Concord's Kevin Gauzeman, and 2319 winner, The Slog's Buzzcut McDonald.

After news of an uptick in productivity in the batting cage, Egret 1B Deez Phantom is PAM's pick for the SCA Nuka Hitter Award. Three-time winner, including in 2319, CF Enigma Montgomery of Glowing Sea, is picked to be the runner-up. Other top candidates include CF Derek Cureall of Goodneighbor, Roxbury's 2B Odd Todd Walker, and FHE 2B Phil Brodie.

Two-time Vim! Pitcher Award winner (2315, 2319) Macho Lopez of Diamond City is picked to repeat in the SCA. Lane Phrasemaker of the Yao Guai is picked to finish second, followed by the Red Rockets' Make Money, Spectacle Island's Meribrand Docybuck, and Baker Dozen of FHE. Former winners Alex Language (2317), Josh Brown (2316), and K-9 Creep (2313) are all also in the running. 2318 winner, Mike Searocker of the Ninjas, is not in the running after returning from a serious injury that shut him down after three poor starts in 2319 that also lent speculation that Searocker was injured before the season began.

3 April 2320

Opening Day Excitement

Two franchises have won their first-ever games and two MVP candidates started off on the right foot.

The biggest news of all was the result at Egret, where the Ninjas revealed their championship banner at Fallon Field at Egret Tours Marina. In a shocking twist, the defending champions fell to the Cape Cod Mirelurks, 5-3, after a three-run 9th by the Mirelurks.

Trailing 3-2, Timelord Marvel led off with a single off first-time closer Pin Tell. Tell (9-1, 2 SV, 1.32 in 2319) took Outie Lett's place in the game and as the closer. After getting two straight outs, Cape Cod's Jozie Newroad hit a pinch-hit home run to give the Mirelurks the 4-3 lead. Yorkie Tallsky followed with a single, followed by Slip Knotty's RBI double for the final score.

Nuka World also had a thrilling 9th inning to take a 6-4 win over Nordhagen Beach at Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium. After the Party Boys scored two runs in the 8th to take a 4-2 lead.

With Nutso Fast pitching the 9th, Mulch Goner started with a leadoff walk for the Thrills. Malificent Shaw was hit by a pitch to put runners at 1st and 2nd. With one out, Seer Ladybird singled to load the bases. Fast then walked Seemly Sam Tucker to cut the lead to one. Rookie Cone Chek followed with a bases-clearing triple, making the score 6-4, the final. Chek was named Game MVP.

In the Nuka Hitter race, three-time winner Eden Babz is already PAM's pick to win his fourth. Well, he started off with the CBO's best hitting performance on Opening Day. In a 9-5 win over Cambridge and ace Scooter Yaghmour, a top candidate for the Vim! Pitcher Award, Babz went off. Babz was 4 for 4 with two doubles, a home run, a walk, three runs, and two RBI. The Assaultrons were up 9-0 in the game before the Coursers scored their first run.

Staying in the NCA, PAM's 2320 pick for the Vim! Pitcher Award is Salem's Paul Stains, and he lived up to the hype on Opening Day, achieving the top pitching performance in the CBO. In a complete game, Stains held Starlight to one run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
