Will Vest has been awful this year. 16 IP, 16 runs (14 earned), 2 HR's, 7 BB's with 17 K's. ERA+ of 54. Not that Kenley Jansen has been that much better in his 14.1 innings of work giving up 4 homers and sitting at a ERA + of 85. The offense has received a lot of heat, and deservedly so but this club has blown 7 leads after the 6th inning this year and are tied for league worst 12 blown saves overall. Let that sink in for a second. If you covert on those 12 saves the record would 33-22. However, nobody is perfect. Houston as a team has only blown 2 saves. The Guardians have only blown 4. So let's say we play is conservatively and cut the blown save number in half. It gives you a record of 27-28. While still not great, it would at least keep you in the fight. Statistically speaking Finnegan who has only given up 5 runs in 24.2 innings has been their best reliever. Yet, that is really deceiving because he has walked 19 batters and only struck out 15. So that 1.82 ERA he currently has is a mirage and unsustainable when he walks so many hitters.
I know Scott Harris tried to address the bullpen this last offseason but it just has not worked out. Bullpen's are historically volatile and unpredictable year to year because you are analyzing a bunch of small sample sizes with players mainly used in high pressure situations. It is one of the reasons why I miss the days of starters that could go THROUGH 7 innings and hold an opponent down. Hell give me those guys from the 80's like Gossage and Willie Hernandez that came in and gave you a 3 inning save. Anyway, to put this back on track, the hitting has been bad but the bullpen is what is really costing them all these games in my opinion. Last edited by Hrycaj; 05-27-2026 at 06:14 AM. |

Agreed, the bullpen is a disaster. So is the offense. On average, scoring less than 4 runs per game and giving up more than 4 per game. Not good.

There are times in a season where living six time zones away from your team is a real advantage. "I must go to work tomorrow, so I can not watch them get three hits off a guy with a 5.65 ERA."

That was a nice talk with Tom Selleck.
Nicer than the 3-spot the Angels put up in the meantime or how the Tigers are playing in general.

Montero pitched great. Bulpen and offense sadly did their thing.

Whew, this bullpen is trash, and the starting pitching is right there with it. It sure is nice to have Carpenter back in the line up.

Glayber coming back is fantastic. Verlander is on rehab in Toledo.
Slowly getting the band back together.

At this point I'm hoping that we get a monster return in a Tarik trade.

Mize, Skubal, Jansen, Verlander, are all due back over the next week (possibly). Jobe back early August.
If they stay on a rip, a deadline deal for Skubal may be more interesting.

IF the Tigers can keep winning, as of this writing they are 4.5 games out of the last Wild Card spot, they could be in an interesting spot of being both a buyer and a seller. You could deal Skubal but also add a bat. Even without Skubal the starting pitcher has been pretty good. It will be interesting to see if Harris gets creative here.

"Luisangel Acuna - he doesn't have a lot of power"
*clonk!*, a score-flipping 2-run homer. ![]() That, and the one earlier about a Tigers player, "oh he has such good at-bats!", and three seconds later, a plonk, and an inning-ending double play - that's the point where as play-by-play guy I'd shut up for an inning or two.

We are going to the Bronx Monday night to (hopefully) see Skubal pitch. Seats just to the left of the Visitor bullpen.
If they trade him this weekend, I may not be able stomach another game until 2027.

I’m going to stay on this hill. The bullpen is the cause of most of this.

Mize finally looks like that guy you drafted all those years ago. Now he is going to be dealt or walk in free agency. Baseball can be cruel sometimes.

I don't care what era of baseball you subscribe to. At no point in the history of baseball do you let the tying run on second steal third without trying to hold him or throw down when he does steal. Then of course Anderson throws one in the dirt allowing the runner to score and tie the game to rack up yet another blown save. I can't wait for A.J. Hinch to "teach" me how that was a good decision in the post game. That whole sequence is just unacceptable and it tells me how little this team really cares. Pathetic.
THEN in the bottom of the 10th batter shows bunt early on 2 pitches. Ball is bunted a foot in front of the plate and they have to go to first why?? Because nobody is covering third. Why is the SS covering 2nd with 3rd and 1st crashing? Even if the game is not on the line your SS should wheel to third. This is insane. And yet, they still won the game. I feel like they were literally conceding the game to New York and then New York was like. Nah. We don't want it. Last edited by Hrycaj; 07-01-2026 at 04:40 PM. |
