CBO Playoffs: Association Semifinals Round Results

Just the opposite of the Wildcard Round where every series winner swept their way to the next round, every series in the Association Semifinals Round went the distance of five games. We have interesting Association Championship Series matchups, which we will preview tomorrow. First, here are the game results and statistics.

Analysis

CBO Playoffs: Association Championship Series Previews

Overview

All but one league champion is out of the playoffs, with the Malden Grognaks being the lone survivor. Both #1 seeds went one-and-done, the first time since 2309 that neither #1 seed made it to the Association Championship Series when #1 seeds Starlight and Oberland both fell in the Semifinals Round.

This could also mark the second-straight season that we have a #2 vs #6 matchup with the Grognaks still alive and Roxbury in the SCA as the 36 seed. The Rad Sox are also in position to be the fourth #6 seed to reach the Sole Survivor Series since 2313. Since 2313, one of the bottom two seeds (#5 or #6) has made the Sole Survivor Series five times (in seven seasons), including the past four.

For the third time in five seasons, the Assaultrons and Grognaks meet in the NCA Championship Series for the right to the Sole Survivor Series. In each of the two previous meetings, it was the Trons that found victory.

Malden has been decently successful in the playoffs in now their 5th appearance since they debuted in 2315. Still, the Sole Survivor Series has eluded them so far with the Trons being the main team stopping them from advancing to their first SSS.

Easy Town is now making its 11th playoff appearance and fifth trip to the NCA Championship Series (2298, 2315-2317, 2319). They have advanced to the Sole Survivor Series in four of those seasons (2298, 2316-2317, 2319) with one championship (2317). A win here would put the Assaultrons in sole possession of 2nd place in the NCA in Sole Survivor Series appearances behind Nordhagen Beach (7) and potentially tied with Roxbury for 2nd most in the CBO, depending on the Sox's series with Diamond City.

Analysis

While the CBO has bounced back and forth in its tiebreaker formulas, electing not to have a season-ending extra game tiebreaker, this matchup would have been perfect to determine the regular season champions. The first tiebreaker, as it stands, is head-to-head matchups, where the teams went 5-5 against each other. The next tiebreaker for teams in the same league is league record. Malden clinched the Brotherhood League title here, going 42-30 vs the Trons' 39-33.

Games were decently tight in both Malden and Easy Town with 7 out of 10 games within three runs. Each home team was most successful at home with the Grognaks going 3-1 and Easy Town going 4-2.



Successful hitters for the Assaultrons in the season series included Donnie Gray (.342/4/10) and Finnan Hunt (.342/0/4). While their records did not indicate it, both SPs Dave Pitcher (1-2, 19.2 IP, 2.75) and Red Eagle (1-1, 19.2 IP, 2.75) held Malden down in runs.

For the Grognaks, their best hitters against Easy Town were Lance Tinter (.355/1/4) and Taffy Dare (.310/2/7). Starters did not hold the Trons down in runs well, with Vault Boy Barnette (1-1, 14.1 IP, 3.77) and Quincy Jones (1-0, 17.1 IP, 4.15) being the best.

Statistically speaking, the Assaultrons seem to be the better bets, including finishing 2nd in the NCA in both runs scored (631) and runs allowed (496). Malden finished 4th in runs scored (610) and 5th in runs allowed (528).



Prediction

Malden has been flirting with the Sole Survivor Series for years now with the Trons being their main enemy in preventing it. This is a season of revenge for them. On the other hand, the Assaultrons have been the most successful team in the past few seasons, appearing in the Sole Survivor Series in three of the past four seasons, including last season. The Trons also have been able to win both previous matchups, and we think they are the better team overall. Easy Town 4, Malden 2

2303 - Association Semifinals - Roxbury 3, Diamond City 2

It has been 17 years since the Diamond City Swatters and Roxbury Rad Sox have faced each other in the playoffs. Since that matchup, including the 2303 season, there have been four titles between them but few playoffs that involved both teams. Those seasons were 2304 and now 2320.

The Sox were one of the powers that dropped off from relevance. After winning their third title in 2311, Roxbury made the playoffs in 2312 and then missed seven-straight seasons. Overall, this is the Rad Sox's 6th appearance in the SCA Championship Series. They went 5-0 in their previous five trips, marking them second overall in the CBO in Sole Survivor Series appearances (5) and titles (3). Nordhagen Beach is first in each (7 and 4).

Diamond City is the most successful team to reach the Sole Survivor Series, going 3-0 in their appearances, including their last just two seasons ago over Cambridge. In SCA Championship Series appearances, the Swatters are 3-1 with their only SCACS loss coming in 2317 when they dropped the series to Quincy.

Analysis

In the regular season, in six games in Diamond City, the Swatters went 5-1 but then dropped all four games to the Sox in Roxbury to complete the regular season. That sweep by Roxbury is the reason they are here and why the Swatters entered the playoffs as the #4 seed instead of the #3 seed.



For the Rad Sox, their top two hitters against Diamond City were Turbo Blackwood (.333/0/0) and Honker Trinkl (.290/3/7). Bix Bimbleman hit two homers. On the mound, Daley Hayes (2-1, 21.2 IP, 1,25) was the only starter to record an ERA under 5.00 against the Swatters.

Diamond City's top hitters were Chill Pillman (.375/0/4) and Teng Dgebuadze (.300/2/10). Macho Lopez (1-1, 15.1 IP, 1.76) and Dimman Dillon (1-1, 14.2 IP, 3.07) had the best performances as starters against the Sox.



Prediction

The Sox have made a great run, but they are against one of the best pitching rotations we have seen in some years. While he probably will finish 2nd at best in the Vim! Pitcher Award voting, Lopez (22-8, 2.12) is one of the CBO's best pitchers and tied the regular season wins record. Dropper Millieu (15-10, 2.41) and Black Red (9-8, 2.51) both are among the best in ERA among starters, with Heavan Fontenot (13-8, 3.27) and Dillon (11-7, 2.10) giving top support in the bullpen. In other words, we do not see the Rad Sox scoring a lot of runs and need to hold down the Swatters to win this. They won't. Diamond City 4, Roxbury 2

The Association Championship Series followed the pattern of the Wildcard and Semifinals rounds with all series finishing in a dead heap for number of games played, This time, both went six games with a little jostling for the series early and then one team taking over late. The Sole Survivor Series follows, but first, here are the results

Analysis

Malden clinched their first trip to the Sole Survivor Series in walk-off fashion, topping Easy Town 2-1 in Game 6. Zeleny Nemec started the bottom of the 9th inning by reaching on a Halep Gutteridge error. Jacob Tarberry then doubled off reliever Donall O'Reilly to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. After a strikeout and then a walk to load the bases, Nhat Tru hit a deep fly ball to left field, allowing Nemec to score on the walk off sacrifice fly.

Jack of Diamonds Cordero earned Series MVP honors, going 8 for 18, including three home runs, with six RBI. It was the first series MVP honors for the 28-year-old former 2nd overall pick (2312).

Analysis

Diamond City's pitching took over in the final three games after falling behind in the series to Roxbury, 2 games to 1. In the last three games, the Rad Sox were held to three total runs, as opposed to the 15 scored in Games 1-3.

The Swatters' Tend Dgebuadze was named Series MVP for his hitting efforts. In the series, he went 10 for 21 (.476) with a homer and six RBI. While not earning MVP honors, Diamond City pitcher Dropper Millieu finished 2-0 with 13.0 IP (2.77), 9 H, 2 BB, and 13 K. Macho Lopez finished with a 1.93 ERA in 14.0 IP, though he did drop Game 3, 2-1.

CBO Playoffs: Sole Survivor Series 2320 Preview

#2 Malden Grognaks (80-64) vs #4 Diamond City Swatters (86-58)

Season Series: None

With the new schedule in place, teams play four teams from each league in a three-game series instead of previously playing one series against each team from another association. In the case of 2320, the Swatters and Grognaks never met.

Malden went 14-10 against the SCA, including 6-6 versus the Railroad League. Against SCA playoff teams, the Grognaks went 2-1 against Southie and Egret.

Diamond City went 15-9 against the NCA, including 10-2 versus the Brotherhood League. Nahant and Starlight were the only NCA playoff team that the Swatters faced, beating them both 2 games to 1.

Playoff History: None

Since this is Malden's first trip to the Sole Survivor Series, it makes perfect sense that the two teams have not faced off. For the Grognaks, this is their fifth season in the playoffs (2315-2317, 2319-2320), including the fifth in the past six seasons. In defeating Easy Town in the NCA Championship Series, the Grognaks were also in their third ACS, all against the Assaultrons. This is the first time Malden won.



Diamond City is now making its fourth Sole Survivor Series and second in three seasons. In 2318, the Swatters faced the other 2310 expansion franchise, Cambridge, defeating the Coursers 4 games to 2. The Swatters were also the first back-to-back champions, defeating the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud in 2299 and 2300. Diamond City is the only team to appear in multiple Sole Survivor Series and never lose it. With their fourth SCA title, the Swatters are now second all-time in SCA titles, trailing Roxbury (5), which they beat in the SCA Championship Series. Diamond City is also now tied with Easy Town and the Silver Shroud for third in Sole Survivor Series appearances. Nordhagen Beach (7) and the Sox (5) are first and second, respectively.

Analysis

Looking back on PAM's preseason predictions, these two teams are about where they should be. PAM picked Malden to finish the season at 81-63, winning the Brotherhood League, and finishing behind Fort Hagen as the #2 seed. Diamond City was supposed to finish in second place in the Railroad League behind FHE and hold the CBO's second-best record behind the Yao Guai for the #3 seed in the SCA playoffs.

As it stands, those were close. The Grognaks did indeed finish as the #2 seed behind the Silver Shroud in the NCA. For the Swatters, they did finish in 2nd place behind FHE, but they ended up with the #4 seed after a late losing streak dropped them from the #3 seed.

Looking at the talent of the two teams, the Swatters appear to have many of the advantages in talent. The most obvious is the pitching staff, where Diamond City (422) allowed over 100 runs fewer than Malden (528). The gap for runs scored was much lower, with the Grognaks (610) scoring 75 more runs than DC (535).



For Malden, most of their talent is in the first four bats in the lineup, including the third and fourth hitters, Jacob Tarberry and Phantom Vargas. Lance Tinter and contribute at the top.

Ahsoka Tano is the ace and gets the opportunity to face off against the Swatters' 2nd pitcher, Dropper Millieu, instead of their ace, Macho Lopez. Lopez is expected to start Game 3.

Diamond City has talented distributed throughout their lineup, but Alex Bragman and Chill Pillman, batting 4th and 5th, would be considered their two most talented players on offense.



Prediction

We admire Malden's journey to get here. At the same time, they are facing the team we considered the second-best in the CBO during the regular season for a reason. This has been the year of the pitcher, and the Swatters' rotation is the best in the business. We don't expect the Grognaks to put up as much of a fight as their comic book counterpart. CBO News

On this first day of the Sole Survivor Series, there is some Diamond City news. As reported, owner Moe Cronin passed away on September 16.

Today it has been announced that daughter of Diamond City businessman Arturo Rodriguez and former star of the HCU television show, radio show, and movie franchises as the Mechanist, Nina Rodriguez, has agreed to purchase the team.

Rodriguez was not previously interested in ownership in the league, but the 44-year-old Rodriguez recently hung up her mechanist suit in the HCU with her character moving on to bigger and better things in 2319's Unstoppables X: Unstoppables Forever. Macy Montage now takes over as Casey Cruz, daughter of Isabel Cruz, aka Young Mechanist. She will premier in 2321's show, The Young Mechanist: Flight of the Caseys.

For Rodriguez, her recent presence in Diamond City has been noticed where she has been helping her father sell his shop, Commonwealth Weaponry, the largest weapons shop in Diamond City.

One of the first mentions that Rodriguez has mentioned in taking over the team was honoring Cronin. He is expected to have the #22 retired in his honor. Cronin was an admirer of an old ball player named Moe Berg who wore that number. It was reported that Cronin was "thinking about retiring that number." RP Buffalo Jung currently wears #22.

Diamond City by far has the most retired numbers (22 currently). Cronin honored the retired numbers at The Great Green Jewel when he learned who they were. Diamond City's list of retired numbers:

Not at all. I don't know if my save is just getting more and more corrupt, or what the problem may be. There were already features I had to disable (baseball cards) since they would crash the game. I cannot go to some screens, like the playoff history trees, without crashing the game. Now, I cannot open news stories, box scores, etc., into browsers.

After the season, I am going to try to backup the league again and then uninstall OOTP. Maybe a fresh reinstall can help?

I did pinpoint that one of Microsoft's updates began some of these issues for me. Suddenly, my computer cannot retrieve those forced OneDrive files even if I log in. I discovered that was a OneDrive versus OOTP issue when I was having the same problem retrieving work files. I had to go to the OneDrive website to download those files to my computer. Such an annoyance.

I am busy for the most part today, but I will plan to write out some news stories either later this evening or tomorrow for the Sole Survivor Series. At least it will have some news stories detailing the games.

Sole Survivor Series: Malden Grognaks vs Diamond City Swatters

Game 1: Malden 8, Diamond City 1

Grognaks Break Late Tie, Pull Away for 1-0 Lead

The Malden Grognaks played their first Sole Survivor Series game in style, blowing out the home Diamond City Swatters, 8-1, in Game 1 of the Series.

The game was tied, 1-1, entering the top of the 7th, but the Grognaks found a way to their first lead. With the Swatters' Dropper Millieu on the mound, Zeleny Nemec led off with a walk. Jack of Diamonds Cordero then reached on an error, putting runners at 1st and 2nd. Hawkeye Dawson then singled to load the bases.

After G.B. Means struck out, pitcher Ahsoka Tano contributed to his team's offense by hitting a two-RBI single to make the score 3-1. Later in the inning, with reliever Duaita Ofanengaue on the mound, Jacob Tarberry walked with the bases loaded to make it 4-1.

Malden pulled away in the 9th on a two-RBI double by Tarberry and a two-run home run by Phantom Vargas for the 8-1 final.

Tarberry was named the game's MVP, going 3 for 4 with two doubles, a walk, a run, and three RBI. Vargas and Tano each added two RBI.

Tano was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run on four hits with three walks and a strikeout in 6.2 innings. He was also injured in the 7th inning with a biceps injury and will miss the rest of the Series. Alphabet Abdelnaby pitched the final two innings to earn the save.

Milieu was the losing pitcher, allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Buffalo Jung allowed all four runs in the 9th.

Game 2 continues tomorrow at The Great Green Jewel.

The Malden Grognaks are halfway to their first title in team history after shutting out Diamond City, 3-0, at The Great Green Jewel. The win gives the Grognaks a 2-0 series advantage as the next three games shift to Malden.

Malden's Beasty Boyd Hollen pitched eight innings of shutout ball, allowing five hits and striking out two in securing a lead. Alphabet Abdelnaby pitched a scoreless 9th, allowing a hit and striking out one, for the save.

The Grognaks' Lance Tinter tied an NCA and CBO record for times walked in a game, 4. he was 0 for 1 with two runs scored. The first of his two runs came in the top of the 1st inning. With Tinter on 1st and one out, Jacob Tarberry hit his third double of the series to make it 1-0. That was enough to win it.

In the 5th inning, rookie and 2319 1st-round pick out of Curry College, Zeleny Nemec hit a two-run home run, marking the 3-0 final.

Diamond City's Black Red was the losing pitcher, allowing three earned runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 5.0 innings. The Swatters' Ramrod Arana had two of his team's six hits. Two Shoes Rivera had the only extra-base hit, a 4th-inning double.

Tarberry and Jack of Diamonds Cordero each recorded three hits for the Grognaks. Each doubled in the game.

Game 3 will take place at Unstoppable Park in Malden on Friday. Expected starters are Macho Lopez for Diamond City and Quincy Jones for Malden.

I did pinpoint that one of Microsoft's updates began some of these issues for me. Suddenly, my computer cannot retrieve those forced OneDrive files even if I log in. I discovered that was a OneDrive versus OOTP issue when I was having the same problem retrieving work files. I had to go to the OneDrive website to download those files to my computer. Such an annoyance.

I am busy for the most part today, but I will plan to write out some news stories either later this evening or tomorrow for the Sole Survivor Series. At least it will have some news stories detailing the games.

Sole Survivor Series: Malden Grognaks vs Diamond City Swatters

Game 3: Diamond City 7, Malden 6, 10 inn.

Diamond City Needs Extras, Wins First Game of Series

The Diamond City Swatters looked to be on the brink of falling down three games to none in Game 3 of the Sole Survivor Series. Trailing 5-3 entering the top of the 8th, the Swatters took the lead, and then scored the only run of the 10th inning for a 7-6 win over Malden at Unstoppable Park. The Grognaks now lead the Series, 2 games to 1.

Chill Pillman was a big part of Diamond City's victory. The second baseman went 3 for 5 in the game with a triple, a home run, two runs, and three RBI. His three-run bomb in the 8th gave the Swatters a 6-5 lead at the time.

In the top of the 10th, it was SS Alex Bragman who put his team up for good. Leading off against the Grognaks' Vault Boy Barnette, Bragman drove an 0-2 pitch over the rightfield wall, sparking Diamond City's win. Bragman finished the game 2 for 4 with a home run, a walk, two runs, and an RBI.

Malden kept its hopes alive in the bottom of the 9th thanks mostly to the Diamond City bullpen losing control. With Abe Lincoln Marbury on the mound for the Swatters, he struck out Hatrack Hines before allowing a single to Lance Tinter and then walking Zeleny Nemec and Jacob Tarberry in succession to load the bases with one out. Floren Habern then hit a deep fly ball to RF, allowing Tinter to score the tying run, making it 6-6 in the 9th.

With the bases again loaded after another walk, Heaven Fontenot came on in relief to get the final out, giving the Swatters one more chance to win. Fontenot pitched a scoreless 10th, also, preserving the win.

Game 4 continues tomorrow at Unstoppable Park with first pitch set at 8:05 PM.

Diamond City Scores 11 to Even Series

We went into the 2320 Sole Survivor Series thinking that it would be a pitcher's series. So far, offense is king. Diamond City showed that offense, outscoring Malden, 11-5, to tie the Sole Survivor Series at two games apiece. With the win for the Swatters at Unstoppable Park, the road team is now 4-0 in the 2320 Series.

Veteran Alex Bragman was the leader of the offensive charge in Game 4, earning him Game MVP honors. The nine-year veteran went 3 for 5 in the game with two doubles, a home run, three runs, and two RBI. His two-run home run in the top of the 5th proved to be his second-straight game-winning hit. That homer gave the Swatters a 6-4 lead.

Four other Swatters each had two hits. Vignar Graymane drove in three teammates. Ramrod Arana added two runs.

For the Grognaks, the only player to accumulate multiple hits was Floren Habern. He went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored. Rookie LF Zeleny Nemec, who was not called up until August 2, hit a home run in the third-straight game. Nemec has taken over the position from the 2319 Corvega Top Defender at LF, Taffy Dare.

Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision. Dropper Milieu, who started for the Swatters, allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits with four walks ans six strikouts in 4.1 innings. Buffalo Jung, who took over in relief, was credited with the win. He allowed one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings. Dimman Dillon, Machine Beard, and Wally Wasteland Wanderer each pitched a scoreless inning to complete the game.

Malden's starter, Hry Caje, pitched 4.0 innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Each of the four pitchers in relief gave up at least one run. Vault Boy Barnette followed Caje, allowing two earned runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout in two innings. He was credited with the loss, allowing Bragman's home run.

Malden gets one more shot at home in Game 5 on Sunday. Beasty Boyd Hollen is set to start for the Grognaks, while Black Red will lead the Swatters. Hollen got the win in Game 2 in the shutout win.

Malden Repeats Game 1, Moves One Game Away from First Title

Malden got back on track in winning Game 5 at Unstoppable Park, exactly as they did in Game 1, by a final score of 8-1. The Grognaks' victory over Diamond City now gives them a 3-2 series lead, winning the first home game in the Series.

Beasty Boyd Hollen earned his second victory of the Series, holding the Swatters to three hits and a run while walking four and striking out six in 8.0 innings of work. That performance earned him Game MVP honors.

A runner up for MVP honors was rookie Zeleny Nemec, who went 3 for 5 with a double, a home run, two runs, and three RBI. Nemec has now homered in four straight Sole Survivor Series games.

In the bottom of the 1st inning, the Grognaks scored all they needed to win. Against Diamond City starter Black Red, Lance Tinter walked to lead off, followed by Nemec's double to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. Jacob Tarberry hit into an RBI groundout to make it 1-0. After Floren Habern singled to send Nemec to 3rd, Phantom Vargas singled in Nemec for a 2-0 advantage after one inning.

Red was credited with the loss, his second of the Series. In 4.0 innings, he allowed five earned runs on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Buffalo Jung and Ricky Redd completed the game for Diamond City, allowing one and two earned runs, respectively.

Nhat Tru added two doubles for Malden, accounting for half of his team's extra-base hits. Malden outhit Diamond City, 13-3.

After taking Monday off, the Series will continue on Tuesday in Diamond City. The Swatters get home-field advantage the rest of the way, but need to find that first home victory in Game 6. Macho Lopez is expected to start, giving the Swatters the advantage, against Malden's Quincy Jones.

Malden Scores Two Late to Clinch Sole Survivor Series

The Malden Grognaks are champions! With a 5-3 victory over Diamond City at The Great Green Jewel, the Grognaks have won the 2320 Sole Survivor Series, 4 games to 2. It is the first championship in Malden team history and the Swatters' first loss in the Sole Survivor Series.

Despite a no-decision, Malden starting pitcher Quincy Jones was named Game MVP. In 5.0 innings, he allowed two earned runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Dermot Napper, who pitched two innings in relief, earned the win, allowing one unearned run. Alphabet Abdelnaby pitched the final two innings for the save.

With the game tied, 3-3, in the top of the 7th, rookie sensation Zeleny Nemec his a one-out triple. After intentionally walking Jacob Tarberry, Diamond City reliever Machine Beard threw a wild pitch, allowing Nemec to score. That run proved to be the winner, giving Beard the loss. He also exited the game with cramps in his forearm.

Nemec was ultimately named the Series MVP. The 2319 1st-round pick was called up on August 2. In the Series, he went off. In Game 6, he was 2 for 5 with a triple, a home run, two runs, and an RBI. He hit homer in five-straight Sole Survivor Series games, Games 2-6. In the Series, he finished 9 for 28 (.321) with a double, a triple, five home runs, nine runs, and eight RBI. Nemec's final home run of the Series also was the last run scored of the series, a 9th-inning bomb.

Nemec was quoted as stating, "Nobody can take this away from us. Not ever. We worked hard, and we accomplished our goal."

Macho Lopez started for the Swatters but also had a starter's no-decision. In 5.2 innings, he allowed three earned runs on seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Malden manager, Chris Blizard, expressed his confidence after the game. "I could see it in their eyes," Blizrd said. "The players had that look of intensity, of hunger, of a desire to accomplish something great. They did that today. They're champions of the CBO. Heck, they're champions of the world."

CBO Draft Pool and Combine

We will spend the month of October covering the upcoming November 5 Draft. One of the newer events in the CBO has been the Draft Combine. A few of the top prospects showed up, all considered to have helped or maintained their draft stock. In all, 238 draft-eligible players participated in the 2320 Draft Combine.

Especially effective were four of the prospects considered to be potentially #1 overall: LF Bear Bather, Gloucester (CYL); SS Monster Milam, American Int'l (CCBL); 1B Zack Newyorke, Rhode Island (CCBL); and SS Key Thrashmaster, Marion (CYL).

Some of the lesser-known prospects that have improved their draft stock are as follows: LF Clappy Drain, Elms College (CCBL), 58 potential; C Blackjack Rastelli, Bentley (CCBL), 47 potential; and SS Goatee Yoon, WPI (CCBL), 59 potential.


CBO News and Notes

October 15 - You can focus on the negatives after being traded to a new team -- finding a new place to stay, leaving teammates and friends, having to start anew -- but one player hopes to focus on the positives. "It means I'm wanted somewhere. At least one team sees potential in me." Those were the comments heard after the Providence Super Mutants came to an agreement to deal 28-year old RHP Damien King to the Egret Ninjas for 22-year old minor league RHP Ahto Riksman earlier today. The deal is expected to be formally announced later this evening.

Lifetime King has 3 wins and 10 losses and a 4.75 ERA.

October 15 - It took some time to iron out the details, but the Dwellers and Thrills have agreed to a swap. Nuka World will get 25-year old CF Hallinan Looney with Vault 81 receiving 26-year old C Gregory Taldese and 24-year old minor league LF Corvus Mudstool in return. A source close to the trade talks said the two clubs were initially looking to make a bigger deal, but discussions broke off late last night. The two sides reconvened early today and eventually settled on this deal.

Lifetime Looney has hit .268 with 298 hits, 24 home runs, 121 RBIs and scored 159 runs.

October 17 - Fans in Salem woke up this morning to learn that their team had traded 30-year old LF Sebastian Lort to the Providence Super Mutants. In return, the Witch Hats will receive 34-year old RHP Admiral Kelm.

Looking at his all-time stats, Lort has a lifetime .305 average with 1171 hits, 237 doubles, 29 triples, 85 home runs and 469 RBIs. To date he has scored 513 runs, walked 210 times and stolen 96 bases.

Kelm has compiled a lifetime ERA of 4.03 with 161 career victories and 121 defeats. He has 1615 career strikeouts in 2367.2 innings and has held opponents to a .252 batting average.

October 18 - Reports have surfaced that County Crossing has agreed to send 30-year old C Did Clark to the Oberland T-51s in exchange for 31-year old RHP Air McNair and 23-year old minor league LF Jack Clark. "It's a done deal," said one executive speaking on the condition of anonymity. "I'm surprised word got around so quickly. We just signed off on this an hour ago." The deal apparently is awaiting physicals before an official announcement is made by either team.

Clark has registered a career batting average of .186 with 358 hits, 10 homers and 143 RBIs.

Since coming into the league, McNair has a 85-126 mark and a 4.44 ERA. The 31-year-old hurler also has struck out 1114 batters in 1720.2 innings and permitted 1785 hits.

Very happy to see Malden pull of their first title! A very fun numerical playoffs, as in the first round all the winners pulled off 2-0s. Then every round after the loser ended with 2. All the best of 5s went the distance and we didn't get a single Game 7

October 19 - It's all done except the paperwork. The Cape Cod Mirelurks and the Cambridge Coursers have agreed to a trade that will send 26-year old LHP Redmond Brooks to Cambridge, while 23-year old CF John Cluff will be shipped to Cape Cod. A top front office executive with the Mirelurks described the trade talks as "quick and easy." "We're glad to get this deal done. We think it's something that helps our ball club and it didn't take too long at all to sort this one out," he said.

Brooks has fashioned a 43-45 won-lost record in his career with a 4.29 ERA.

Cluff has a lifetime .234 average with 74 hits, 19 doubles, no triples, 6 home runs and 34 RBIs to date.

October 20 - The CBO has announced that it will hold a special Winter Meeting from November 10-12 with some interesting items of note. A couple are in regards to ownership changes. Apparently, a few of the owners around the league were shocked by Moe Cronin's sudden passing, and there are a few owners looking to offload their teams in their waning years.

There are also talks of rules changes, though we do not have specific details. Some league insiders have speculated that there has been a recent age analysis where there were comparisons to Commonwealth Collegiate Baseball League prospects' success versus Commonwealth Youth League prospects. Our own Baseball News Network contacted the CBO's Scouting Association for details, but we are still awaiting a response through ESAU inquiries.

Another factor that will probably be discussed, though this is speculation on our part, was the extreme changes in hitting vs pitching success. Both the NCA (.227) and SCA (.224) had their lowest batting averages in league history, while also seeing the lowest ERA in the SCA (3.44) and the second-lowest (3.55) in the NCA, with the lowest coming in 2316 (3.54). The SCA's previous low ERA was also 2316 (3.61). Neither association had ever seen a league batting average below .250.

October 20 - Far Harbor owner Small Bertha has expressed that she wants more talent at the manager level in the minors, so she sacked the managers of both the MML's Leominster Actors and the BMU's Groton Ragers.

Lawler Miller had actually diagnosed the problem himself just weeks ago. After a particularly bad stretch of games earlier in the season he said, "The team just needs to change the way it's operating."

He probably didn't expect his firing to be one of those changes, though.

Nevertheless, this is the route the Leominster Actors have decided to take, firing Miller late last night.

In Miller's place, the Actors have employed 52-year-old Bubba Nixon. Baxter last managed the Lynn Fortune Finders of both the GBRL (2304-2305) and MML (2306) before moving on to a bench coach role in the CBO with Oberland (2307-2313) and Jamaica Plain (2316-2320). In thirteen seasons as a bench coach, teams he coached made the CBO playoffs 11 of 13 seasons.

Additionally, looking like he hadn't slept in 24 hours, fired Groton Ragers manager Mike Merryman met the media before heading back to his hometown.

Merryman was fired today.

"It stinks. It's miserable. I hate it," Merryman said. "But that's baseball. I'm sure there's a silver lining here somewhere. I'll call you guys when I find it."

Veteran manager Bearskin Melton takes over. In 10 seasons as a manager across three teams, Melton is 472-377. He won the Mount Desert Island League with the Rock Point Barnacles in 2316. He was not offered a job after the Vim! League and its affiliates were disbanded following the 2319 season.

October 20 - The rumor has been out there for a while now and today it was made official. The Lexington Synths have sent 25-year old RHP Daw Gupta to the Atom Cats for 21-year old minor league 1B Royal Grant and 23-year old RF Serious Sam Biggs.

October 21 - As mentioned in some of our speculation about Winter Meetings, Atom Cats owner Zeke Cat, who thinks he is 71 years old, expressed that he is no longer "the coolest Cat in town."

According to sources, Cat has "slowed his roll," and has spent a lot more time tinkering with some of his older power armor suits. Speculation is that he is trying to keep the Cats "at the garage," and that enough caps flow through the Atom Cats Garage to keep the team profitable. Atom has benefited since the Warwick Mirelurks left for Spectacle Island in 2304. While not the highest attendance in the CBO, Atom has done better than some of the pure farming communities like Oberland and Sunshine Tidings. Previous farming communities, Warwick, Abernathy, and Finch Farm, have all relocated to larger settlement areas with various resources at their locations.

CBO Draft

This week in the 2320 Draft preview, we will look at the Top 5 ranked CCBL players by their expected draft order by OSA. According to today's available Mock Draft, the OSA expects five of the top six players to come from the CCBL.

1. SS Monster Milam, American Int'l - Milam is a defensive gem with an effective bat. He is expected to be a Day One Corvega Defensive Player of the Year candidate at SS. With the bat, he may rate even higher. Milam needs to work on his contact skills but he knows how to hit for power. He is a line drive hitter, so most of his homers are not absolute bombs, just skimming over the fence at 45-degree angles. Some scouts have compared Milam's approach at the plate to the GOAT, Barker Cocoa. We shall see. If he is 75% Cocoa, Milam could be a HOFer.

2. CF Chris Stainfield, Sturbridge - Scouts love Stainfield's versatility in the OF, where he is currently project at CF but will probably settle into a corner OF spot as a power hitter and later move to 1B as his legs give way. Stainfield is a patient hitter who likes to work the count and has a scary (for the fielders) swing when he sees a pitch he likes. Some scouts call it "pent up rage of a behemoth." Stainfield is expected to be better served spending some time at the NEBL or MML, but may be needed right away by one of the expansion teams should he go Top 5.

3. RF Mason Brawn, Salve Regina - Brawn appears to be an all-tools hitter who needs a little more time to develop in the minors after three good years with the Seahawks. Scouts like his contact skills, his ability to drive the ball over the wall, and his ability to draw walks. He is a great corner OF, so he will slip into the starting lineup once his bat has developed to CBO expectations.

4. SS Goatee Yoon, WPI - Yoon is seeing a Mock Draft spike following his Draft Combine work. Scouts saw the impact that his bat could have for a team, where he shined most at the Combine. Yoon has shown a knack as an inside-out hitter. As a switch hitter, that means he would be most successful aqainst pitches coming at him, like sliders, where he loves to drive the ball to the opposite field. He tends to fall in love with a few too many pitches, so he needs to be more patient than the types of pitches he saw at the Combine. His defense is OK, so teams should never expect a Corvega Award.

5. LF Falcon Cunningham, Bentley - Cunningham is not a power hitter, but he is great at LCF to RCF hits, giving him a chance to have a good SLG at the next level through multiple doubles to the gaps. Scouts like his approach at the plate and how well he avoids chasing pitches away from the sweet spot on his bat's barrel. He does not have the frame to develop into a power hitter, so he should do well sticking with what he does well. While being the 5th-highest collegiate player taken may be a post-Combine stretch, Cunningham is expected to be good with both the bat and glove.

Very happy to see Malden pull of their first title! A very fun numerical playoffs, as in the first round all the winners pulled off 2-0s. Then every round after the loser ended with 2. All the best of 5s went the distance and we didn't get a single Game 7

Of course, I had to go digging into the playoffs history to find some similarities in statistical anomalies.

First, for no Game 7, the last time that happened was in 2312. Fort Hagen downed Salem, 4-1; Vault 81 swept Jamaica Plain; and then the Silver Shroud swept the Dwellers.

It was the third of three-straight seasons (2310-2312) without any Game 7. the only other season that there was no Game 7 since moving to the 7-game Championship Series in 2299 was 2307.

The only season where all three of the final series went to Game 7 was 2302: Nordhagen Beach downed Fort Hagen; University Point stopped Jamaica Plain; and then the Party Boys beat the Deathclaws.

This season was the first where every round was exactly the same. There were already few years where it happened in the Play-in Round (2300-2309 with just two series)/Wildcard (2310-2320 with four series): 2303 (PI), 2304 (PI), 2306 (PI), 2308 (PI), 2309 (PI), 2312 (WC), 2320 (WC). Both times that it happened in the Wildcard Round, the series were all sweeps.

The first and previously only time that the Association Semifinals Round had all the same results was in 2319 when all four series were 3-0 sweeps.

For the Championship Series and Sole Survivor Series, as mentioned in all Game 7s in 2302, that was the only other time that all series ended in the same number of games.
