1977.

Bradley went from the Giants to the A's on waivers on April 8, 1976. Oakland opened its regular season the next night in Anaheim. If it wasn't already beyond improbability that Bradley managed to get into an Oakland uniform on the same day he was acquired that happened to be either the day the team broke camp, or the day after it had already done so - there's no chance the Topps Arizona/Bay Area photographer Doug McWilliams would've been in Mesa and not back in San Francisco for the Giants' opener on the 9th.

Additionally, Bradley's SABR Bio Project entry notes that he was claimed on waivers on 4/8/76 and immediately assigned to the Oakland PCL farm team in Tucson. Also his bio during his days as baseball coach at Maryland refers to him being in the Oakland organization in 1977, which would be consistent with the idea that he pitched in AAA for them in '76, went to camp in '77, and was released.

A nice shot of Stengel, with the Pirates in 1919. The original (found at rmyauctions.com), then my cleaned up version:

White Whale Alert

In the latest TV release, could it be the one and only Tom Brown, bane of 1978 and Seattle Mariners collectors? He of a 6 game, 13 inning ML career in September of 1978? I believe it is....

Bradley, Brown, Tiant

That Tiant is very rare - the 1974 home-only red front/black sides cap that the Red Sox dropped in mid-season.

I'll add on Bradley that 1976-77 was the winter free agency kicked in and the A's checked out, so anybody who was breathing was a candidate for the 1977 team.

And this much later photograph of Tom Brown as a minor league coach confirms that is indeed the White Whale of the '78 Mariners:

Frank Snook 1973

Coulda sworn I posted this long ago - anyway, here it is again, plus a Morey of Snook at Syracuse of the International League after his trade to the Yankees (for Horace Clarke) in 1974.

Yep, I missed it back in July. My bad, and thanks for adding the Syracuse photo!

Jim Foor 1971

Cleaned up version of the earlier 1973 Pirates image - first I've ever seen of the pitcher.

Tom Brown 1978

As we've waited so long to reel the whale in, no reason not to post the other pic of Brown, as well. Good picture, too:

Larry Bradford 1977

Most of the Bradford images out there have him in a warmup jacket, so it's nice to see him in a uniform in color. This is spring training of 1981, apparently, given that the Braves debuted that jersey in 1980, which was also the last year for that cap. I've done some tweaking so that the shadows on the originals aren't such an issue.

Bradford died at 49, suffering a heart attack while visiting Turner Field with a Little League team.
