These are from Mel Bailey who photographed most of the California teams and the AZ spring training teams during the 70's, 80's, and 90's. If you never met Mel, you missed a treat.

Forgot...Gomez wore #37 in 1984. Kelly Downs was assigned the number in 1986.

Rainmaker you are on to something with this. As a catcher, Cummings would have had lots of Spring training time with the Giants. #37 was worn by Eddie Plank until 1980 and was not issued to any player until Gomez. The high cheek bones and facial shape lead me to lean more toward this being Cummings. Good call.

Here's another minor league card of Bob Cummings. To me, the narrow nose and the shape of the mouth line up very well with the Topps Vault image and I think substantiate that Cummings is the player. Furthermore, I can attest that Bob Cummings was on the San Francisco Giants' spring roster in 1981 and 1982. The Giants uniform #37 was not in use during the regular season for those two years.

I've been working on early 60s photos recently and wasn't happy with the results when trying to restore some of the old vault stuff I had. I picked up some new software today and made some progress - here's the first two I did (if it's not cool to post these, just drop me a note and I'll remove - I don't visit here all the time and I'm not sure what flies lately)

It's Paint Shop Pro X8 Ultimate. I've been using Paint Shop Pro 7 since way back. PSP 7 did a good job on a lot of the newer early 70s faded or redcast stuff, but I rarely could get the older photos to any kind of natural-looking state.

I'm still experimenting, but the features that really did the heavy lifting in PSPX8U for those two shots were the hue map (esp. on the green), one step photo fix, fade correction, and white balance. I fine-tuned the PSPX8U results a bit in PSP 7 for contrast and hue just because it's still more familiar. A lot of the basic PSP features for restoring and adjusting photos are still the same, but there are some nice new tools, and I'm psyched to see what I may be able to do with some more practice

For the last few years, I've been putting together a sort of master set that looks a lot like the 1953 Bowmans or the 1975/1976 SSPC sets. I used to do a set that looked more like the 1967 set (samples were posted in another thread here years ago), but now I like the cards more without any graphics at all - just a simple framed photo.
