You made two things very apparent. The current JJ folder is not where these images came from, but they are true old-school Topps Vault images that have not been posted in existing files. Perhaps they should actually be part of another old-version thread. We will need to investigate further. Thanks for pointing this out. Last edited by Rainmaker; 06-30-2016 at 07:30 PM. |

Our KA 931-32 player is at least a lefthanded hitter. This is Tom Dunbar, who played for the Texas Rangers (83-85). He played part of 1991 for the Pirates farm team. So these pics were probably taken at the Pirates<s spring camp 1991.

Mike Dupree 1976
Not Joe Goddard level scarce, but a pretty tough Padre pitcher whose previous color images have been limited to a TCMA PCL card and his corner of a Topps rookie card.
Friday's Topps uploads (KA): 971-972 Steve Dunning; 973-974 Mike Dupree; 975-976 Taylor Duncan; 977-980 Bob Duliba; 981-982 Ron Dunn; 983-984 Jim Dunegan; 985-986 Gene Dusan (Cincinnati system); 987-990 Dave Duncan Last edited by Merkle923; 07-02-2016 at 02:38 PM. |

Jim Dunegan 1970
This is the minor league first baseman the Cubs made into a pitcher in 1970, seldom seen. The other image Topps posted is a batting pose:

Hector Almonte 1999
I thought this was a fairly good custom Expos photo for Almonte. A friend of mine did it not long ago.

I may be wrong, but I think that the Reds player on KA 985-986 looks more like Gene Dusan than Rick Duncan. Dusan, a 1967 A's draftee, never was in the Big Show. He was primarily a catcher and a Reds's farmhand in 1973-74. Here are the 2 KA pics of the Reds player, and 2 prior from Topps of Dusan with the A's , and finally a minor lg card of Rick Duncan.

Rick Duncan
Thanks, keonleafs, for your raising the question about the Rick Duncan identification and coming up with Gene Dusan as the alternative. I had doubts about Duncan because the bottom of his ears are detached from his face, which is not the case of the player in the Topps Vault photo. Also, it seemed like the only logical point when Duncan would have been in the Reds' camp would have been in the spring of 1979. The only info I could pick up from newspaper research was that he was working out with the Indianapolis Indians that spring before reporting to the Nashville Sounds. But I hadn't figured out who else that Cincinnati Red might be.
This photo of Rick Duncan came from the Tennessean (Nashville) of May 9, 1979. |

Am I missing something or is the vault completely devoid of any pictures of him? It just seems odd given his era and the fact that he played as much as he did.

Charley Smith and 1,950,000 other images
Regarding Charley Smith, or any given player whose negatives Topps has or hasn't sold on eBay, this reminder: the files I got to do my research in contained at least 1,000,000 images, and the fact that Topps has sold countless images I looked for but could not find, suggests there was a second storage area which I did not see and that the actual number is likely closer to 2,000,000.
Topps started auctioning the images in 2007 (I believe). Let's say the average number of baseball images sold per week has been 100 (a generous guess). That means that nine and a half years into the process they are only now approaching their 50,000th negative sold. That would be 2.5 percent of all the images they have. 1,950,000 to go. A supply sufficient to keep up this pace into the year 2,491. All of which means the odds against a particular image being sold are about 97.5%. It's speculative to try to suss out the odds against or for any one of the 20,000-25,000 different players and non-players they shot to appear - especially given that there's no motivation for Topps to distribute players in any kind of order. As we've seen, they tend to grab a bunch of files in an alphabetical cluster, take ALL they have of a given player, scan four of them one day, scan one or two card-used ones a few days later, and then maddeningly return to his file again and again until we are up to our necks in Taylor Duncan. I can tell you that there is/was a Topps file of Smith. It contained a negative created from re-photographing a colorized team issued shot of Smith with the Dodgers at the L.A. Coliseum, at least one session shot by a Topps photographer at the Dodger camp at Vero Beach, at least one of Smith with the Phillies at Connie Mack Stadium, several shoots of him with the White Sox, several Mets shoots, a spring training and a regular season shoot of him with the 1966 Cardinals, a bunch of Yankee shoots, a session from spring training in Phoenix with the 1969 Giants (for whom he never played), and at least one shoot with the '69 Cubs at Shea Stadium. While we're here a note about "folder JJ" or whatever it is. The web hosting site Topps now uses only became known semi-publicly in about 2011. That means there is about four years' worth of Topps images out there - the earliest ones in low-definition and with no watermarks - which were all posted on eBay via some means or site we don't know and cannot access. That they may have been preserved and now easily catalogued is great but these images should not be confused with "new" uploads. |

Proud owner of 29 (number one) Hits
A former Negro League player who had a (failed) tryout with the 1962 Mets, and currently a part-owner of the Texas Rangers, this frustrated ballplayer found another career better suited to his skills: singer and Grand Ole Opry member Charley Pride.
Pride, who was closely associated with the Rangers for years, wound up in a Milwaukee Brewers uniform and the subject of Doug McWilliams' camera -- and a pair of postcards issued in 1973. His biggest hit, 1971's "Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'" hung in at Number One for five weeks. He became a part-owner of the Rangers in 2010. Ironically, his final No. 1 hit, in 1983, was "Night Games."
